Spain's Climate and Weather
Location Map of Spain
Climate Overview
Spain can broadly be divided into three climatic zones:
Oceanic climate: This is found on the northwest coast, from the Basque Country to A Coruña. It is characterised by low temperature ranges, both daily and annually, with monthly averages never dropping below 12°C or exceeding 25°C. However, this part of Spain receives much more rainfall than elsewhere, particularly in winter.
Mediterranean climate: This covers the eastern coastline and even extends to the southern Atlantic coast when moving from Gibraltar towards Portugal. The region enjoys abundant sunshine year-round, with dry, hot summers that are tempered by the proximity of the sea and, locally, mountain ranges. While summer monthly averages hover around 30°C, this is still cooler than inland. Winters are mild and pleasant along this entire coastline, with temperatures often between 15°C and 20°C. Rainfall is also low, regardless of the season.
Semi-arid climate: This broadly describes the interior of the country, with hot, dry summers that can even be scorching (temperatures regularly reach 40°C in some areas), and significant daily temperature swings between day and night. Conversely, in some high-altitude or northern areas, winters can be harsh. As in most of Spain, rainfall is relatively low across these regions.
Best Time to Visit Spain
Climatically speaking, given the country's size and diversity, the ideal time to visit depends on your destination. However, for most of Spain, spring and autumn are excellent times to travel, if only to avoid the locally scorching summer months (and, of course, the crowds). That said, for those seeking winter warmth and sunshine, the southern and southeastern coastlines are also pleasant in winter compared to the rest of Europe.

Sea Temperatures Throughout the Year
While the water temperature on the northern Atlantic coast is only pleasant for swimming during the summer months, in the Mediterranean or along the southern coastline, you can enjoy it from April to nearly November.
