Flying to Montenegro
General Information
Montenegro has only two commercial airports: Podgorica (the capital) and Tivat, located on the coast, which handles almost exclusively charter and seasonal flights. In fact, the latter is the busier of the two, with around 900,000 passengers per year compared to 700,000 at its competitor, even though the capital’s airport is the main base for the national airline, Montenegro Airlines.
However, the main airport in the region remains Dubrovnik in Croatia. The city is only 50 km from the Montenegrin border, and its airport attracts more traffic than both Montenegrin airports combined. Additionally, its connections are heavily focused on Western Europe, including France, unlike the other two, which prioritize Eastern European countries. In short, Dubrovnik may well be the best choice for an air arrival in the region.
Types of Flights
Local Airlines
Apart from Di Air and Oki Air, which are charter companies, there is only one national carrier. Montenegro Airlines is the (small) national airline and serves just eight countries, including France via Paris-Charles de Gaulle.
Charters, Scheduled, and Low-Cost Flights
Beyond a few scheduled airlines and Ryanair’s occasional low-cost flights, the country mainly receives charter or seasonal flights.
Promotions and Special Offers
As is often the case with charters, you can find promotions and special offers for this destination. The only downside is that very few deals are available for direct access from France or even Western Europe. However, there are far more options for Dubrovnik in Croatia.
From Europe
There are many more possibilities if you include flights to/from the nearby Croatian airport of Dubrovnik.
From France
Only Lyon and Roissy airports offer direct flights to Montenegro. Expect roughly a 2.5-hour flight, with round-trip fares ranging from 180 to 350 € from Paris.
- Lyon: Podgorica (Montenegro Airlines, seasonal)
- Paris CDG: Podgorica (Montenegro Airlines), Tivat (Montenegro Airlines, seasonal + charters)
From the Rest of Europe
While flights from Russia and Eastern Europe in general are well-served, connections from Western Europe are more limited, mainly covering Italy, Germany, Vienna, London, and parts of Scandinavia. Also:
Belgium & Switzerland
- Brussels: Tivat (Thomas Cook, seasonal)
- Charleroi: Podgorica (Ryanair)
- Zurich: Podgorica (Montenegro Airlines + Edelweiss Air, seasonal)
From Elsewhere
There are no direct flights to/from other continents, so connecting flights are necessary.
