For nearly 25 years, under the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha, all religions were banned and churches and mosques were closed. It was only in 1990 that freedom of worship was restored in Albania. Overall, the country is predominantly Muslim at 57%, with Catholic (10%), Orthodox (7%), Bektashi (2%) minorities, and especially a large number of atheists or people who do not claim any religion.
