UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Albania has four sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list:

Berat, Albanie
Berat (2005)
This city in southeastern Albania is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its stunning historic centre and citadel.
Butrint, Albanie
Butrint (1992)
Perched on a peninsula south of the seaside resort of Saranda, Butrint is a major ancient site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is, in fact, the most interesting in the country.
Gjirokastër, Albanie
Gjirokastër (2005)
Close to the Greek border, the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its stunning Ottoman architecture and hilltop citadel.
Lac d'Ohrid, Macédoine
Lake Ohrid (2019)
Straddling Albania and North Macedonia, this lake offers swimming, fishing, and various water activities. On the Macedonian side, it is home to several monasteries and villages along its shores. It is surrounded by the Galicica and Pelister parks and is a UNESCO site under the "Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid Region".

The Coast

Apollonia, Albanie

The site is a major Greco-Roman archaeological site near the city of Fier.
Bunkers d'Hodja, Albanie
Hoxha's Bunkers
All along the Adriatic coast (among other places), you can still see the remains of the 800,000 bunkers built under Enver Hoxha’s presidency in the 1960s/70s.
Butrint, Albanie
Butrint
Perched on a peninsula south of the seaside resort of Saranda, Butrint is a major ancient site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is, in fact, the most interesting in the country.
Byllis
Near the city of Vlorë, not far from the sea, Byllis was in its time one of the most important Illyrian cities.
Dhërmi
This small seaside resort on the Albanian Riviera, between Vlorë and Saranda, is expanding rapidly. Its town still has a few old buildings and two monasteries.
Durrës
It is Albania’s main port, including for ferries arriving from Italy. Some remnants of its ancient past still remain.
Lezhë
A small town on the northern coast with the ruins of a hilltop fortress.
Riviera albanaise, Albanie
Albanian Riviera
This is the coastal stretch running roughly from Vlorë to Sarandë. Between these two seaside resorts, the coastline remains quite wild, with relatively limited tourist infrastructure. Note that from the summit of the Llogara Pass overlooking it, you can enjoy a magnificent panorama.
Saranda
Opposite Corfu Island (ferries), this seaside resort nestled in a pretty bay has become a major tourist destination both for its beaches and for its proximity to the UNESCO-listed site of Butrint.
Vlorë
It is both the country's second-largest port (after Durrës) and a rapidly developing seaside resort with major real estate projects.

Natural Heritage

Karavasta Lagoon
One of the most important lagoons in the Mediterranean. It is part of the national park of the same name. You can see many birds here, including large numbers of pelicans.
Parc national Llogara, Albanie
Llogara National Park
This mountainous park overlooks the Albanian Riviera and is a favorite among hikers. From the summit of the Llogara Pass, you’ll enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding area.

Lin
A quiet little village on the shores of Lake Ohrid. From here, you can set off to visit the beautiful city of Ohrid, which isn’t far on the Macedonian side.
Moscopole
This small town in the southeast and its surroundings are home to several old Orthodox churches and monasteries.
Pogradec
The city is on the southern shore of Lake Ohrid, next to North Macedonia. It’s the base for exploring the lake (swimming, water activities) and its surroundings (small villages, archaeological sites).
Shkoder, Albanie
Shkodër
Located on the shores of the lake of the same name, this is the major city in northern Albania, known for its fortress, religious buildings, and bazaar.
Tirana, Albanie
Tirana
Albania’s capital offers an intriguing mix of old, Soviet, and contemporary architecture.

Albanian Alps
This mountain range in the north of the country offers stunning landscapes of canyons, valleys, lakes, and rivers. You can also hike here and enjoy the two national parks it encompasses.
Lac d'Ohrid, Macédoine
Lake Ohrid
Straddling Albania and North Macedonia, this lake offers swimming, fishing, and various water activities. On the Macedonian side, it is home to several monasteries and villages along its shores. It is surrounded by the Galicica and Pelister parks and is a UNESCO site under the "Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid Region".
Lac de Prespa, Macédoine
Lake Prespa
A large lake shared by Albania, North Macedonia, and Greece, where it is designated a national park. Several Byzantine churches and abandoned villages dot its shores. The lake is home to significant bird colonies, including pelicans.
Lac de Shkoder, Albanie
Lake Shkodër
Straddling Albania and Montenegro, where it is known as Skadar Lake National Park, this large lake is home to numerous bird species. You can also navigate its waters and hike around its shores.
Mont Korab, Macédoine
Mount Korab
This region of the Šar Mountains, straddling Albania and North Macedonia, includes Mavrovo National Park. It’s an area for hiking and other outdoor activities like skiing at the Zare Lazarevski and Popova Sapka resorts. You can also see the Korab Waterfall, the tallest in the Balkans, and several scenic lakes such as Lake Mavrovo.
Lura National Park
This park in the northeastern region offers beautiful landscapes with several lakes, as well as a fairly rich wildlife (bears, wolves, lynx). Hiking is possible here.
Dajti Mountain National Park
Very close to Tirana, this mountainous park is a popular destination for residents of the capital. It offers pleasant mountain landscapes for hiking.
Shebenik-Jabllanice National Park
This is a mountainous area in central Albania, quite remote, where bears, wolves, and lynx live. Hiking is possible here.
Theth National Park
The smaller of the two parks in the Albanian Alps, featuring a beautiful waterfall as its first attraction.
Tomorr National Park
A lovely mountain park near the city of Berat where you can hike.
Parc National de la Vallée de Valbona, Albanie
Valbona Valley National Park
One of the two parks, along with Thethi, in the Albanian Alps. It offers stunning landscapes and a few caves to explore.
