Exchange

Currency exchange offices can generally be found in major cities and main airports across Canada. Foreign currency exchange is also available at banking institutions, and it’s possible to withdraw Canadian dollars from most ATMs nationwide.

Hotels, restaurants, and large stores may accept certain foreign currencies, but the exchange rate is usually less favorable than at a bank.

Which currency to bring

It’s best to obtain Canadian dollars before departure, as the final exchange rate is typically better.

Payment methods

Major credit cards, including American Express, MasterCard, and Visa, are accepted everywhere in Canada for all transactions. However, be mindful of bank fees if you make multiple small purchases or withdrawals. Still, it’s wise to carry some cash, especially in rural areas or for using public transportation (city buses).

Upon return

While it’s always preferable not to re-exchange money you’ve already converted, any leftover Canadian dollars can easily be exchanged at banks after returning home.
