Health and Safety in North America
Official Recommendations
In France, for both individuals and professionals, the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding precautions for each country has legal value. A similar online travel advice system exists in several countries:
Precautions
The situation in North America is quite similar to that in Europe. The only difference is that natural risks or those linked to crime (in the USA) may be slightly more significant (and violent) than on the other side of the Atlantic...
Health
Diseases and Hygiene
No specific issues regarding North America.
Local Healthcare Facilities
Facilities are excellent, though logically they may be limited in the most remote areas. The only (very) major drawback: the cost of care, particularly in the United States. This is why it is essential to have good insurance with an appropriate coverage limit.
Safety
Crime and Delinquency
Overall, the same problems exist in North America, particularly in the United States, as in Europe. The only difference is that crime and delinquency are more pronounced, with many people being armed, so it is wise to take certain precautions. For example, be vigilant in public or tourist areas regarding pickpocketing. In most cities, some neighborhoods are best avoided, as are nighttime walks on foot.
Additionally, in some regions of the southern USA, anything foreign, gay, or non-white may occasionally face issues. Generally, US police are not known for their nuance or sense of humor...
Socio-Political Risks
North America, particularly the USA, regularly faces terrorist threats. Whether real or exaggerated depending on the period, the fact remains that such threats can exist. However, there is no reason to overreact to the point of never leaving home...
Climate and Nature
Natural risks are more significant (and violent) here than in Europe. These include hurricanes (Gulf of Mexico), tornadoes (central USA), floods (particularly in Alaska), and seismic risks (Rocky Mountains and the West Coast, including California). Nonetheless, prevention and information systems generally work well, and it is advisable to follow the recommendations issued.
With its climate, much of the continent experiences hot summers and (very) cold winters. Also, whether in the deserts of the southern USA or the vast wilderness of northern Canada, it is best not to stray from marked paths, even in national parks.
Animals
From the Rocky Mountain bears to the desert snakes of the southern United States, including the bayou alligators or sharks on certain coasts, North America has some species that can be dangerous to humans. However, the risk of bad encounters remains very low. That said, more than with such animals, you will likely have to deal with the countless mosquitoes and flies that swarm in certain areas at certain times of the year...
