For security reasons (DRC and others) and because borders are sometimes closed, avoid the entire west coast and the central part of the continent when travelling to Southern Africa overland. The simplest option—also doable using public transport—is the Tanzania-Zambia route along the Trans-African Highway 4, which connects Cairo to Cape Town.
