Three religions dominate Tanzanian society in nearly equal proportions. The country—or at least its mainland—has 35% Muslims, 30% Christians (notably Pentecostals and Lutherans among Protestants), and 30% animists, particularly practicing ancestor worship. In Zanzibar, the situation is different, with 98% of the population being Sunni Muslim.
