Etiquette
Key points of etiquette and conduct in Tanzania.
Attire
- For women travelers, it is recommended to wear clothing that covers the body. Avoid miniskirts, shorts, light outfits, and low necklines, especially in Zanzibar (outside hotel zones).
Behavior
- In some parts of Zanzibar, alcohol is not sold, so it is best to avoid consuming it while there.
- During Ramadan, between sunrise and sunset, discretion is advised when drinking, eating, or smoking. This is particularly true in Zanzibar, where 98% of the population is Muslim.
- Regarding homosexuality, discretion is also recommended, as it is considered illegal in the country and may result in severe penalties.
- Always ask for permission before photographing people.
- In all situations, it is best to remain calm and avoid raising your voice.
Sensitive or Taboo Topics
It is important to respect the culture and beliefs of the people, as certain situations may offend them and lead to unpredictable reactions.
Languages
The official languages of Tanzania are English and Kiswahili. The latter, spoken by 70% of the population, belongs to the Swahili language group and is derived from Arabic.
Paradoxically, neither is the mother tongue for most Tanzanians; instead, they serve as a means of communication between communities. Tanzania has over a hundred local languages, none of which is dominant. Kiswahili was adopted as the "everyday common language" so that different populations could understand each other. English, spoken by just 14% of the population, is the language of universities, business, tourism, and not at all of the "general public."
