Nature-Adventure

Nature is omnipresent in Botswana. Beyond its sparse population, the country boasts several world-renowned parks and natural sites such as Okavango Delta, unique in its kind, the Moremi and Chobe parks, and Central Kalahari Reserve, the second-largest reserve in the world. It’s no surprise that exploring this environment and the activities it offers is the primary reason tourists visit.

Culture

There are few, if any, historical landmarks here, though the site of Tsodilo and its 4,500 rock paintings is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and there are several "traditional villages." Culturally, Botswana is primarily about meeting the people and experiencing their still-vibrant traditions.

Relaxation-Holidays

The country isn’t typically associated with the traditional "relaxation-holiday" image and is better suited for those seeking contact with nature and African wildlife.

Independent Travel

Botswana is a destination for beginner travelers, though some basic precautions and common sense are necessary when venturing outside cities with a vehicle—especially off the beaten path.

Organized Travel

Botswana is well-covered by both international and local agencies for circuits or tailor-made trips, particularly for safaris and related activities. Depending on the package, offerings may focus solely on Botswana or include extensions to neighboring destinations or at least the nearby Victoria Falls (Zambia/Zimbabwe).

Gay and Lesbian Travelers

Like most African countries, Botswana is not very "gay-friendly." Homosexuality is officially illegal, though in practice, there is no enforcement or repression by authorities.
