Health and Safety in Botswana
Official Recommendations
In France, both for individuals and professionals, the "travel advice" from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding precautions for each country has legal value. A similar online travel advice system exists in several countries:
Health
If arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever, a yellow fever vaccination certificate is generally required to enter Botswana. Otherwise, no vaccinations are mandatory, though it is still advisable to be up to date with your "basic vaccinations."
Diseases
The country's health situation does not present major risks compared to many other destinations. However, malaria is well-established in the northern part of the country (Zone III, the most resistant), particularly during the rainy season (November to April). Since this is the main tourist area with the major parks, it is important to take precautions (and use appropriate malaria prophylaxis for each individual) by protecting yourself from mosquitoes and similar pests. The best approach is to use a good repellent, cover your arms and legs at dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and bring an impregnated mosquito net if sleeping in a place without air conditioning or ventilation. However, the southern part of the country (Gaborone) is not affected by malaria. Beyond that, parasitic risks are limited to bilharzia, which can be contracted by swimming in stagnant water or the Okavango Delta.
In another area, it is important to note that, as in many countries in the region, HIV/AIDS has a devastating impact on the population. Although programs and actions are underway, the infection rate is one of the highest in the world, with over 20% of the population infected by the virus.
Hygiene
As always, good personal and food hygiene is necessary if you are not used to "eating local." In this case, avoid dishes or foods that do not appear completely fresh, if only to prevent traveler’s diarrhea. As for tap water, it is generally potable in cities, but it is still preferable to opt for bottled mineral water.

Safety
Crime and Delinquency
Far from reaching the levels of its South African neighbor, Botswana still experiences increasing crime in urban areas (with very little risk in the countryside). It is therefore important to remain vigilant day and night in cities and to avoid flaunting wealth in public. Similarly, it is best to avoid walking at night and to only take taxis "recommended" by an agency or hotel.
Scams and "Tourist" Harassment
Socio-Political Risks
No issues. The country is actually a model in Africa for democracy and governance. For over a century, it has never experienced conflicts, including during decolonization, guerrilla warfare, or coups.
Climate, Nature, and Wildlife
Botswana is a vast, sparsely populated country with immense desert areas where climate, nature, and even wildlife can pose dangers if not taken seriously. Distances and time (especially in case of problems) are also different from what one might be used to. In short, in all cases—and especially when traveling independently by car—it is essential to take precautions, be well-equipped according to your plans, always carry a reserve of water and even fuel, gather information, and follow advice from professionals. It is also useful to inform someone of your itinerary, especially if you plan to venture off the beaten path.
Foreign Consulates on Site
If you encounter problems while traveling abroad, your country’s consular services can assist you. It is also worth noting that if you are a citizen of the European Union and your country is not represented, you can contact any other representation of an EU member state.
