Types of Travel in South Africa
Travel Themes
- Interests (rated ): Nature ; Adventure ; Culture ; Relaxation-holidays .
Nature-Adventure
Thanks to its coastline spanning two oceans, its mountains—particularly in the south with the Drakensberg massif—its plains, and the Kalahari Desert spilling over from neighbouring countries, South Africa offers a wide diversity of environments and landscapes (such as the Garden Route), rich in flora and especially fauna, which can be discovered in the country’s public and private parks and reserves. This setting is also ideal for outdoor and adventure enthusiasts.
Culture
The "Rainbow Nation" lives up to its name, and despite a often turbulent history, the various populations that make it up have largely preserved their cultures and traditions, which are best discovered through encounters rather than architecture. Nevertheless, you can visit places with old or "Cape Dutch" architecture (Graaff-Reinet, Montagu, Stellenbosch, Tulbagh, Pilgrim’s Rest...) as well as historically significant sites (Robben Island or locations tied to Zulu or Anglo-Boer conflicts), or even step back in time with the "Cradle of Humankind" and its UNESCO-listed archaeological sites.
Relaxation-Holidays
With its beaches and numerous seaside resorts mainly scattered along the Indian Ocean between Cape Town and the Mozambique border, the country positions itself as a "relaxation-holiday" destination. This part of the coastline, particularly around Durban, attracts thousands of foreign tourists as well as South Africans who flock there during school holidays and the southern summer. In short, the country has little to envy its European counterparts in this regard. You could also add the "mini Las Vegas" that is Sun City...
Independent Travel
While South Africa is a tourist-friendly country, well-equipped and easy to travel in terms of logistics, security can still be an issue, especially in urban areas. As such, the destination is better suited for beginner or slightly experienced travellers.
Organised Travel
South Africa is well-represented in travel agency catalogues. You’ll easily find a wide range of options from local or international providers, including tours, stays, treks, safaris, and customisable offers (hotel nights, vehicle rental, etc.) tailored to individual preferences.

Gay, Lesbian
The South African Constitution guarantees freedom of lifestyle, and the country is by far the most "gay-friendly" in Africa, particularly in Cape Town. That said, a certain conservatism persists among parts of the population (white, Black, or mixed), especially outside major cities.
