Entry Requirements and Visa for South Africa

Travelers

For French Citizens

For a tourist trip, a passport valid for at least 30 days after your planned departure date and with at least two blank pages is all that’s required if you stay fewer than 90 days in South Africa. A return or onward ticket may sometimes be requested, as well as a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you arrive directly from one of the twenty or so countries considered at risk.

Other Nationalities

The same applies to nationals of around forty countries, including most of the European Union, Switzerland, and Canada, plus over thirty others—though the visa-free stay is limited to 30 days for the latter group.

Long Stays

For stays longer than 90 days, you may, under certain conditions, obtain an additional three months from South African immigration services once in the country. This must be requested within the first month of your arrival.

In Case of Overstay

South Africa is extremely strict if you overstay your permitted duration. You will automatically be declared "undesirable" and banned from re-entering for 12 months if you overstay by less than a month, or for five years if the overstay exceeds a month.
