Money

Currency

  • Currency: Bermudian dollar (100 cents).
  • Banknotes: 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 BD$.
  • Coins: 1, 5, 10, 25 cents + 1 BD$.
  • Exchange:

The Bermudian dollar (BD$) has been the island’s currency since 1970, when it replaced the Bermudian pound. It is pegged at a fixed rate to the US dollar, 1 BD$ = 1 US$.

Exchange

While you can exchange money locally or withdraw from ATMs to get Bermudian dollars, a good option is to arrive with US dollars, which you can then use throughout your stay.

Which currency to bring

Although the official currency is the Bermudian dollar, the US dollar is used everywhere at par. So, it’s simplest to bring American money.

Payment methods

Paying in cash with US dollars is no problem, with change often given in Bermudian dollars. Credit cards are widely accepted on the island, though some accommodations—especially budget options—may not take them. As always, watch out for bank fees if you make too many small purchases or withdrawals.

Returning home

The easiest option is to finish—or start—your trip with US dollars, which you can always use or exchange easily on another trip if you have any left. Additionally, the Bermudian dollar is not normally exchanged outside Bermuda.

Budget
