Money, budget, and shopping for the British Virgin Islands
Money
Currency
- Currency: US dollar (100 cents).
- Banknotes: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100.
- Coins: 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 cents + $1.
- Exchange:
The US dollar has been the currency of the BVI since 1959, which, among other things, ensures a certain "uniformity" with the neighboring U.S. Virgin Islands that also use the US dollar.
Exchange
If you haven’t stocked up on dollars before your departure, you can always exchange your currency (not always at a good rate) at banks or, more simply, use the ATMs available (only) on Tortola and Virgin Gorda.
Payment methods
In addition to cash payments, credit cards are widely accepted, especially in tourist areas and for services. However, be mindful of bank fees if you make too many small purchases or withdrawals.
Upon return
Since you’ll be using US dollars during your trip, there will be no issue exchanging any leftover money afterward, or simply using it on another trip.
