Due to significant European immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and fewer enslaved Africans arriving than on other islands in the region, Puerto Rico's population is roughly 75% White and 12% Black.

As the island was long under Spanish rule, Catholicism took deep root, though it has been steadily declining and now accounts for just 56% of the population, compared to 33% for Protestantism, which has grown since the arrival of the Americans. Additionally, 8% identify as "non-religious," while other religions remain very much in the minority on Puerto Rico.
