Accommodation in Puerto Rico
Overview of the Offer
Highly tourist-oriented, Puerto Rico has around 15,000 beds, with a good half concentrated around the capital in the beachside tourist areas of the north coast, which are logically the most expensive. While part of the accommodation is aimed at an American or slightly upscale clientele—with prices to match—it’s still possible to find small guesthouses or even rentals at more affordable rates once you move away from the most crowded spots. Additionally, for budget travellers, Puerto Rico is one of the few islands in the region with a small network of campsites, including on the beautiful islands of Culebra and Vieques.
Note that, as usual, prices rise significantly during high season (Christmas to Easter), and it’s best to book the best deals in advance. Depending on your plans, it may also be worth choosing just one place to stay and exploring from there (as long as you have a vehicle).
Hotels of All Kinds
Beyond chain hotels, all-inclusive resorts, or places catering to a wealthier clientele, you can find various good-value guesthouses and guesthouses at relatively low prices. Expect around $50 for a double room at the budget end, with dorm beds sometimes available for $15–20 per person.
Camping
Unlike other Caribbean islands, Puerto Rico has a small network of campsites, varying in quality and spread across nature reserves and coastal areas. This is the most economical accommodation option, with pitches (for two) costing $15–20 per night. Remember to book ahead for weekends or local holidays. While camping on designated sites is fine, wild camping is best avoided for safety reasons.

Choosing Your Accommodation
Camping or local guesthouses and small hotels will work just fine. Choose based on your preferences and budget.
