Health and Safety in Puerto Rico

Official Recommendations

In France, both for individuals and professionals, the "travel advice" from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding precautions for each country has legal weight. A similar online travel advice system exists in several countries:

Health

Diseases

Puerto Rico does not pose significant health risks, although dengue and chikungunya, transmitted by certain mosquitoes, are present as in many parts of the Caribbean. However, there is no malaria on the island. For protection, the best approach is to use a good repellent, cover your arms and legs at dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and bring an impregnated mosquito net if sleeping in a place without air conditioning or airflow.

Hygiene

As always in tropical areas, good personal and food hygiene is essential. Water is potable everywhere. Practically speaking, remember to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun, and don’t forget to wash your hands regularly.

Local Healthcare Facilities

Just like in United States, while healthcare facilities are generally good to very good, they are also very expensive. Given the high cost of medical care, it is essential to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers costs at the same level as in the USA (be sure to check the details). As in the United States, the emergency number is 911.

Safety

Crime and Delinquency

Puerto Rico has a relatively high level of crime and delinquency. As is often the case, drug trafficking is the root of many problems, though these do not typically affect visitors as long as they avoid certain areas, particularly some neighborhoods in San Juan or Ponce. Generally, police presence is strong in tourist areas and places frequented by foreigners.

That said, while there are no major dangers for tourists, it’s still wise to stay vigilant and take usual precautions against theft. This includes not flaunting wealth, using hotel safes, avoiding deserted beaches, isolated spots, camping anywhere, solo hikes, or leaving anything in your vehicle, and keeping doors and windows closed while driving in the city. However, with basic common sense and precautions, you can enjoy a peaceful stay.
