Other than a backpack?
Other options
If you're not a backpack fan, you'll have other types of travel bags, suitcases, duffel bags, and so on to choose from. However, if you have to walk more than 100 metres carrying your things during your trip, you'll quickly regret not opting for a backpack...
So, these are only recommended for those who won’t really have to carry their luggage or will always find something or someone to do it for them.
Travel bag
You’ll find all sorts of capacities and prices, with varying quality. It’s often the alternative for those who don’t want to look too much like a "tourist" (suitcase) or too much like a "backpacker" (backpack). In any case, still go for models with wheels and a carrying handle for when you have to carry your bag.
Suitcase
Here too, there’s a range of capacities, models, and prices. Wheels and a handle (plus a secure lock) are also recommended.
"Suitcase" backpack
This is the clever compromise between the two. See the chapter on different backpacks.
Duffel bag
These have become rare because they’re not always very practical in terms of storage (especially for large volumes) or even carrying (though some models can be worn like a backpack).
Features: on average 1 m tall for 70/150 litres; from 5 kg to 1.2 kg for 50 to 100 €.
Trunk
Beyond steel footlockers, there are now lightweight, foldable "soft trunks" that are inexpensive but not really designed for mobile travellers.
Features: from a few dozen to almost 300 litres in capacity for under 100 €.
Possible extras
Like with backpacks, there are extras, starting with protective covers (or airport covers). You could also add cable locks, reflectors, and luggage tags—always useful. Also practical, though sometimes a bit bulky even when folded, is a foldable trolley to help carry heavy luggage.
