Hi there, My wife and I are getting ready for this tour from March 27 to April 8. I’d love to know if anyone’s traveled with Salaun Holidays before? How many people are usually in a group? How much cash should we bring? We’re also unsure about what clothes to pack..... plus sheets and pillowcases? And if you’ve got any tips to avoid being too bothered by beggars and touts. Any advice you’ve got would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

I can’t say about the agency—I don’t use them. For begging: never give anything, no money, no food, nothing. It’s a shame, but it’s better that way. Tout sellers: never start a conversation, it’s that simple. Sheets + pillowcases: I hope you’re joking?!

Thanks for the info everest22, about the sheets and pillowcases. I got the impression that some hotels were a bit iffy on the hygiene front—some of the reviews for the hotels we’re going to are pretty worrying... like: "hygiene, pillowcases, and sheets criticized!!" 😕 Questions for everyone:

What do you think is the best money-saving option: exchanging currency in Delhi, before leaving, or a mix of euros in cash and rupees before departure? I’ve heard about a little red string to wear on your wrist to avoid being bothered—anyone know more about that? How much do you think we should tip the guide for 2 people over 12 days? Thanks for your valuable advice! Rajasthan-style 🙂

sheets: it's up to you to choose. If you're staying in a guest house or homestay for 5 or 10 € a night, it's better to bring a sleeping bag. Otherwise, ask to see the room before taking it, check the sheets, and if they haven't been changed, switch hotels!! You can't buy rupees before leaving. Likewise, you'll need to exchange your remaining rupees before leaving or spend them all at the airport before departing India.

tip: it's all about the guide's vibe and attitude.

lacet: never heard of it!!! Have a chill trip or you won't enjoy it!

hi about leftover rupees, I read on the forum that some people brought some back and there was no problem !

I must have explained myself poorly. You can take them out, but you won't be able to exchange them outside of India. Just keep them as a souvenir or use them for your next trip to India.

Got it, we’re on the same page now I brought back a bunch of Malagasy banknotes like that from our last trip in 2001, still waiting for the next one (which never comes). Darn! New bills were issued in the meantime and I had quite a few. Should’ve just left them with my family😕 !

Hi everyone! I think a few clarifications are in order... First, I don’t quite understand: if you book this trip through an agency, the hotels they pick should be decent or even really nice—unless it’s a scam! Usually, the trip price is much higher than the actual cost of living in India, which should make the difference, so you don’t have to stress over those kinds of details. Otherwise, you might as well go solo and adventure on your own!!!

As for begging, I don’t agree with the idea that you shouldn’t give anything. Never coins, that’s true, especially to kids, because there’s usually a pimp behind them... But people with disabilities—like those missing a leg or worse—have to survive in this jungle. From what I’ve seen, Indians almost automatically give a coin, but it’s like one or two rupees, no more! When it comes to food, I’ll sometimes offer a samosa, chai, or something else, but I’d say it depends on the vibe with the person. I’ve even offered a meal and invited someone to sit at my table...

The red string is a piece of thread they tie around your wrist after you’ve made an offering at a temple and done a puja (Hindu prayer). That said, it doesn’t mean beggars won’t still approach you! Note that beggars tend to gather where foreigners are—weird, right? So let’s behave properly and tell the difference between someone who’s truly in need and someone who’s just running a business. If you go off the beaten path, sometimes they won’t even dare to come near you. Life is harsh in India, and as travelers, we have to forget our own rules and just let the magic of India carry us away...

Hi there,

While browsing the forum, I noticed you’d asked some questions about the trip you were planning for late March–early April 2011 in northern India and Rajasthan.

I’m also thinking of doing a 14-day tour called "North India and Rajasthan" with SALAÜN, which starts in DELHI and ends in AGRA.

Was this the same tour you took?

If so, could you share your thoughts on it—like how available the guide was, the visits, etc.?

Thanks in advance for your reply!

Hi, We just booked the "North India and Rajasthan" 14-day tour with Salaün. We're leaving from Paris from February 5th to 18th, 2013. And you, when are you going?

Hi Elisabeth 🙂

For now, we haven’t settled on a departure date (vacation issues). We wanted to leave in February 2013, but I’m afraid that won’t be possible. So we’ll have to wait another year… 🙁 since that’s really the period we want. Could you let me know if Salaün handled your visas, and if so, how much they charged you?
EL Elisabeth ·
Hi Catherine, Oh, what a shame for this year—we might’ve been in the same group! Who knows? For our visas, we’ll handle them ourselves since we live in Quebec and have Canadian passports. If Salaün takes care of it, it’s 125 €.

Thanks for your reply. I’ve confirmed that our trip won’t happen this year 😕. I’m counting on you for a full report when you get back, with all your impressions. Wishing you a wonderful trip in advance. See you soon! 😏

Hi, 15 years later, I just came across your post while doing some research. Did you end up taking this trip, and if so, which agency did you use? We’re thinking of heading to Rajasthan this November, including Varanasi. How did your tour go? Thanks
