Tips for a 3-week road trip from New York to Québec

Hi everyone,

It’s been a long time since I last asked for your help! After an amazing road trip in the American West in 2011, thanks to all of you, and another one in 2019 from HOUSTON to L.A., this time I’m tackling the East Coast. But I’m stuck on the planning. I’ve booked a round-trip flight to NYC for 3 weeks in August. Now I’m trying to fill in the days. 5 nights already booked in NYC (Monday to Saturday). Then I absolutely want to head down to WASHINGTON for 2 or 3 days. I wanted to do a loop: NYC, Washington, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal, Boston, and back to NYC. I think that’s too many miles for the loop from Washington to Québec and back to NYC in 2 weeks? Especially since the first week is already planned: NYC to WASHINGTON! On the way back from Washington, I’d like to stop in Strasburg, Lancaster, and Gettysburg. Given that I don’t want to take any domestic flights, since my wife really can’t handle them! Originally, I wanted to fly from NYC to DENVER/SLC to do the Yellowstone loop. We’re getting older and don’t have the stamina for that anymore :( Driving down from NYC to Washington, there’s Philadelphia, but that scares me a bit. Back in 2019, before COVID, I thought we were going to get shot in downtown DALLAS! I can’t figure out how to plan 3 weeks around NYC! Considering we didn’t really like San Francisco in 2011 either. Though after 3 weeks in paradise among the canyons, arriving in that big city and going from 40°C to 16°C was a shock :) We prefer nature over big cities. Thanks for your feedback! Cheers

Hi there,

For excursions around NYC, you can check out this article that lists what you can do in the area. It might give you some ideas.
Il faut bien revenir pour repartir!

You haven’t gotten many replies, so I’ll jump in.

It’s not impossible, but it’s really too much driving for 2 weeks—especially since you mentioned you’re more into nature than cities. You won’t have time to stop anywhere. Either skip Washington and Pennsylvania, skip Toronto/Ottawa, or skip Montréal/Boston. It depends on what interests you most. I like Ottawa and have family there, but after seeing Washington, it might feel like a letdown in the second half of the trip.

Philadelphia is an important U.S. city with a compact and pleasant downtown. Unless you’re really driving at random, you won’t stumble into bad neighborhoods—no one’s going to shoot at you on the highway. Since you’re planning to visit Lancaster and Gettysburg, there are still things to see in Philly (Independence Hall, South Street/Magic Gardens, the museum steps, Eastern State Penitentiary). If you like the architecture of American university campuses, Princeton University is worth a stop halfway between New York and Philly.

A possible 15-night itinerary: Philadelphia (2 nights), Washington (3), Williamsburg, VA (3), Monticello (2), Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Mountains then Harpers Ferry (1), Lancaster/Gettysburg (2), Hudson River Valley and/or Catskill Mountains (2).

Another option: Philadelphia (2), Lancaster/Gettysburg (2), Washington (3), Fallingwater then Pittsburgh (2)—I’m biased since I lived there, but Pittsburgh is a beautiful American city that’s often overlooked—Buffalo/Niagara (2), Finger Lakes region (2), Hudson Valley (2).

Another: Philadelphia + Lancaster + Washington (7), long drive then Thousand Islands region (2), Montréal (4), Adirondacks/Hudson Valley (2). More driving here.

Another: Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains (2), Finger Lakes then Niagara (2), Toronto (3), Ottawa (2), Montréal (3), Mt. Washington then Boston (3).

One last option: Hudson Valley and Adirondacks (2), Ottawa (2), Montréal (3), Mt. Washington and White Mountains (2), Boston (3), Providence, Newport, and Connecticut coast (3).

Don’t hesitate to ask for details if Google isn’t helping with certain stops—I know most of these areas well.

Hi Chrissand and Barneyg, Thanks again for your tips, and sorry for the late reply!!! Barneyg, I went through all your suggestions, but I struggled to sacrifice my priorities, which were WASHINGTON, NIAGARA FALLS, and BOSTON!!! I ended up cutting NIAGARA FALLS because it’s too out of the way, and I don’t want to drive too many kilometers. WASHINGTON is an absolute must, and BOSTON too, since there’s so much to do around both! So for now, I have a second draft of the route: Thanks again for your feedback! NYC: 5 days AMTRAK to WASHINGTON for 3 or 4 days Rent a car in WASHINGTON and return it in NYC GETTYSBURG: 1 day LANCASTER-STRASBURG: 1 day PHILADELPHIA: 1 day PRINCETON in the morning, then head to the HUDSON VALLEY HUDSON VALLEY on the east side, starting with SLEEPY HOLLOW (probably kitschy but worth seeing since I love the movie)

HUDSON VALLEY: S. Hollow, West Point???, Cold Spring, Poughkeepsie, Rhinebeck, Hudson (Should I detour to Rhinebeck to do the CATSKILLS all the way to Downsville? Major detour) From Hudson, head east via Springfield to Salem (just for fun), then BOSTON, Cape Cod, Providence, and back to NYC. I’m not done yet!!!! Thanks again

Salem’s a pretty nice town, but watch out for some tourist traps on certain visits!

Hello, Since the election of the "orange toupee king" to the U.S. throne... we won’t be setting foot there! Well, unless you don’t mind... 🏴‍☠️

On your way back to NYC, you can make stops in Mystic and Newport. Maybe some info from these travel journals: Summer 2015: From Boston to Chicago via Québec province Day trip to Newport (Rhode Island) from New York

How old is "old"? We’ve passed the 70 mark and I’m planning a road trip in the Southwest next year. For the Yellowstone part in 2022, we covered nearly 8,000 kilometers in a month without any issues. And Yellowstone is definitely worth the detour! 😉

Same here. But everyone does what they prefer. There are plenty of other countries to explore in the meantime.
