Hey there,

This is where we chat and share photos outside the contest.

To spark some inspiration and "illuminate" the theme (if I understood your wishes correctly ;))

I’m the dolphin of Place Dauphine And Place Blanche looks under the weather The trucks are full of milk The street sweepers are full of brooms It’s five o’clock Paris wakes up Paris wakes up The drag queens are shaving The strippers are dressed again The pillows are flattened The lovers are tired It’s five o’clock Paris wakes up Paris wakes up The coffee’s in the cups The cafés are cleaning their mirrors And on Boulevard Montparnasse The station is just a shell It’s five o’clock Paris wakes up Paris wakes up The Eiffel Tower has cold feet The Arc de Triomphe is revived And the Obelisk stands tall Between night and day It’s five o’clock Paris wakes up Paris wakes up The commuters are in the stations At La Villette, they’re slicing bacon Paris by night is boarding the buses The bakers are making bastards It’s five o’clock Paris wakes up Paris wakes up The newspapers are printed The workers are depressed People are getting up, they’re downtrodden It’s the hour when I go to bed It’s five o’clock Paris wakes up It’s five o’clock I’m not sleepy

Without having to post our EXIFs, how late can we go? 😛 Morning = dawn, sunrise, daybreak, first light.

Hi Kate,

Morning = dawn, sunrise, daybreak, first light

It’s 9 a.m., the dawn for those who stay up late, as Colette said. 😉

Strictly speaking, dawn comes before sunrise, followed by the first light of day. But I don’t feel like splitting hairs. As long as it’s "early in the morning," as much as possible during the break of day.

Here in Nysiros, the sun must have risen 15/20 minutes ago—it’s still what I’d call "dawn."

Then, as Attila said, the voters will decide.

In what season, madam?

A contemporary of Rimbaud, lost in his Contemplations, for whom day is night and who, in three quatrains, takes us from dawn to dusk would be unbeatable:

Tomorrow, at dawn, when the countryside whitens, I will leave. You see, I know you’re waiting for me. I’ll go through the forest, I’ll go through the mountains. I can’t stay away from you any longer.

I’ll walk with my eyes fixed on my thoughts, Seeing nothing outside, hearing no sound, Alone, unknown, my back bent, my hands crossed, Sad, and the day for me will be like the night.

I won’t look at the gold of the falling evening, Nor the distant sails descending toward Harfleur, And when I arrive, I’ll place on your grave A bouquet of green holly and flowering heather.

Victor Hugo

P.S. It seems the contest failed in the Travel Photography section, not the historical one.

My African dawns date back to the film era.

But the memory of walking in pure gold, following the dance of black pirogue silhouettes with my eyes, remains intact. The silence then, so profound, too.

I hadn’t thought of Hugo. But a little apart from Rimbaud was Giraudoux.

ELECTRA: Where are we at?

WOMAN NARSES: Yes, explain! I never catch on quickly. I obviously feel something’s happening, but I can’t quite grasp it. What’s it called when the day breaks, like today, and everything’s ruined, everything’s wrecked, yet the air is still breathable, and you’ve lost everything, the city’s burning, the innocent are killing each other, but the guilty are dying in some corner of the dawning day?

ELECTRA: Ask the beggar. He knows.

THE BEGGAR: It has a very beautiful name, Woman Narses. It’s called dawn.

Curtain.

PS: I reported this thread to the mods, surprised it was moved. Let’s see if that’s enough to send it back to the usual spot for photo contests.

Good evening,

The time of day makes all the difference! In one case, the day is beginning, in the other, it’s ending. But... is it really that different when it comes to light? I’ll admit I’m not sure.

What’s the difference

Dawn... Your papers! Dusk... Documenti!

Dawn here. Dusk on the other side of the world?

Subtle echoes of an eternal cycle, moments when day hesitates, when shadows and light ignite almost the same way (the proof is in these photos ;-)—the sky above our heads.

(Would you show us your Rising Suns?)

I guess I must not have been very clear...

What’s the difference with the sunset (apart from the side)?

In a photo, of course.
KO Kola Globetrotter ·
Did I ever assume for a second that Masterpo wasn’t clear? 😐 (Maybe read it again carefully to better understand the intent).
MA Masterpo Globetrotter ·
I was actually referring more to UM’s reply...

As for photos, that’s sorted—I only have one. And I already posted it in a contest (which it won, by the way ^^). Plus, you could more *guess* the sunrise than actually see it…
KO Kola Globetrotter ·
Besides, we could guess the rising sun more than we could see it

Isn’t that the very definition of the Aubaurore?

(...

Otherwise, for photos, it’s settled—I only have one. And I already posted it in a contest (which it won, by the way ^^).

I don’t know how many contests there have been (hey Hérikles?), but...

Revisiting a theme from time to time shouldn’t be sacrilege. Other members, other images, would easily renew it.

Presenting a photo—whether it won or not—already submitted in a previous contest shouldn’t be blasphemy. Other members, fresh perspectives, would confirm the first victory, grant a rematch... or indirectly mark a defeat. (Submitting a photo that was already rewarded and seeing it rejected—isn’t that an excellent exercise for the ego?)

And besides, apart from a few nitpickers, a few sticklers, who’s going to remember?

...)
MA Masterpo Globetrotter ·
It’s not about ego—just didn’t want to be annoying. Plus, it wasn’t the same theme. Oh well, if I find it again…

As for the (famous) Heriklès page, here it is: http://herikles.free.fr/.VF/VFconcours.html
MA Masterpo Globetrotter ·
So, 1) we can see there was already a similar topic, and 2) I managed to find my photo in another thread—it didn’t win in the end, but it did make the podium.

That said, the resolution is pretty low (it’s kind of a trend these days), and it doesn’t really allow for displaying it properly...
UN UnaMilanese Veteran ·
Hello,

In 2013, the sun—its rising and setting? For me, that’s not the same topic.

As for the photos already submitted, attentive readers will have noticed that I deliberately removed this part: Photos that have already been nominated (1st, 2nd, or 3rd place) in another contest are not eligible to enter this contest. from ragamuffin’s message.

For the difference between sunrise and sunset, it's simple—just look at my dune photos...

Don’t you see the difference? The light on one side or the other? Okay, but where’s the morning, where’s the evening? Only I know because I was there 😉 You can’t even rely on the time shown on the photos because I sometimes forget to check if the dates and times are accurate—since it’s not data I’m particularly interested in... but that might explain why some photos aren’t sorted under the right date by my software!

Well, yeah, that confirms what I suspected—apart from the fact that the sun sets on one side and rises on the other, it’s six of one, half a dozen of the other...

1. With the consequence that an unscrupulous participant could submit a sunset instead of a sunrise? That’s between them and their conscience. Personally, I couldn’t care less.

2. The contest on a similar theme took place in 2013, so, at a rate of 12 contests per year and considering the game was paused for 4 years, there have been roughly 7x12 = 84 contests. It’s also obvious that in 11 years, the travelers here haven’t taken a single dawn photo since the theme was already covered.

3. My only goal is to not block this game. Let the photography pros who are picky about the organization step up and take over. I’d be absolutely thrilled to pass them the baton.

What’s more, it’s obvious that in 11 years, the travelers here have completely refrained from photographing a single sunrise since the theme was already covered.

3. My goal is simply to revive this game. Let the shutterbug perfectionists who nitpick the organization step up and take over. I’d be absolutely thrilled to pass them the baton.

Ah, finally a real answer (what a change from all the hand-waving) to my technical question. Would the lighting be different?

Copilot seems to agree with you.

It can be tricky to tell the difference between a sunrise and a sunset in a photo, but here are some clues that might help:

### Clues to identify a sunrise: - **Light and colors**: The sky during a sunrise tends to have softer, pastel colors, with pale pinks, light blues, and golds. - **Shadows**: Shadows will generally point west, since the sun rises in the east. - **Human activity**: If there are signs of morning activity, like quiet roads or people heading to work, that can indicate a sunrise.

### Clues to identify a sunset: - **Light and colors**: The sky during a sunset is often more intense and saturated, with reds, oranges, and purples. - **Shadows**: Shadows will generally point east, since the sun sets in the west. - **Human activity**: If there are signs of end-of-day activity, like busier roads or people heading home, that can indicate a sunset.

### Other things to consider: - **Geographic orientation**: If you know the direction the photo is facing, you can use that to figure out if it’s a sunrise or sunset. - **Position of stars or the moon**: Sometimes, the position of stars or the moon can also give a clue, though it’s more subtle.

These tips can help you tell the difference between a sunrise and a sunset in a photo.

This answer is brilliant. If there are people in the photo, you just need to see if they’re heading to work or heading home to know if it’s a sunrise or sunset—progress!
GA Gaura Veteran ·
You can't tell if it's evening or morning unless you know the site and its orientation. For example, the photo of the San Giorgio church in Venice is definitely in the morning sun, while it's the façade of San Marco that's lit by the setting sun... when I go there in October, the sun's path changes every day. No matter for the contest—we trust each other and pick the photos we like best.
