Enduimet in Tanzania: What to see and do?

Hi there!

I’m planning a self-drive trip to Tanzania (either September or October).

This route won’t include any of the usual parks you hear about everywhere (too expensive, too crowded, too touristy).

The idea is to explore Tanzania more for its landscapes, beaches, and hiking. A little wildlife spotting, sure, but that’s not the main goal.

Here’s the itinerary I’m considering:

(Arrival and departure from Kilimanjaro Airport)

Night 1: Southern gate of Arusha NP

Night 2: Northern gate of Arusha NP

Night 3: Enduimet

Night 4: Same (near the gates of Mkomazi NP)

Night 5: Mkomazi NP

Night 6: Mkomazi NP

Nights 7-8-9: Pangani or Tanga

Nights 10-11-12: Usambara Mountains

Nights 13-14: Foothills of Kilimanjaro

I can’t find much info about Enduimet at all.

So if anyone has any details about this place...

All your ideas, tips, and suggestions for the rest of the route are welcome too!

Thanks! :)

Hi Agnès

Probably a pointless question, but... have you checked out the Bradt guide (and their forum)? Happy planning! 😉

Hi Muriel,

For a while now, I’ve rarely checked paper guides before buying my flight ticket. Even less so if they’re not easily available in physical stores. Even less if they’re in English...

I find there’s way more info online.

The problem with Enduimet is that there’s almost nothing out there...

And this place isn’t even in the Bradt guide’s table of contents. (Though it looks like there are one or two chapters that might interest me for the rest.)

I couldn’t find the forum you mentioned???

I couldn’t find the forum you mentioned ???

It wasn’t really a forum but more of a catch-all site (organized by destination, though) where you could find a lot of info—just kind of a mess. I’d checked it out when I was planning my trip to Uganda, so that was a while ago, and now I’m wondering if it still exists (I looked… and couldn’t find it 😕; I thought it was part of the updates, but nope).

Anyway, while Googling Enduimet out of curiosity (the name didn’t ring a bell at all), I saw there’s a website (https://www.enduimet.co.tz/)…; maybe some useful info there?

The title has been changed. What to see and do isn’t really the question.

Is it possible to move around freely? (I think yes, by car) On foot too? (I think no—Masaai guide mandatory)

Prices for accommodations outside of camping? (I found the websites but not the prices...)

Opinion on the area: nice?

Do you need to book in advance if camping? (In my opinion, no, since nobody seems to know about it... )

Hi Agnès, On your way between Moshi and Tanga, there’s Mombo (fir tree, very seasonal!) and from there you can turn left and head to Lushoto, a place I really enjoyed—even though it rained a lot those days. In the forest, you’ll find an impressive panorama, and the walks are pretty nice. If you take the bus, grab a seat on the left side because as you climb toward Lushoto, there are beautiful waterfalls on that side.

Thanks.

Lushoto is definitely on the list. 😉

Hello Attila,

You can always check out the Tanzania travel journal on our site here. We visited a few places that might interest you.

Otherwise, I posted a recap of our Tanzania trip here: Tanzania self-drive in July-August 2018

Hi Nathalie,

Yeah, I saw your feedback!

But no Enduimet on the itinerary.

Hi Agnes,

I’m drawing a blank on Enduimet…

We spent four days in Mkomazi back in October, ages ago. Beautiful landscapes scorched by the sun, a wild dog sanctuary we couldn’t visit, and the local operator in Mkomazi was absolutely terrible. There’s also a rhino sanctuary. Didn’t spot any big cats, but there were loads of birds—raptors and others.

Safe travels! Have a great trip.

Hey Bernard,

I read this sentence with interest on your site!

Needless to say, Mkomazi is the dream spot for those who love solitude and untouched spaces.

That’s exactly what I’m looking for! 😛

I just hope I’ll have better luck than you with the rhinos.

For Enduimet, I’m stumped...

If *you*, the go-to expert on the area, are stumped about this place, then like Mkomazi, I probably won’t run into many people there. 😉
