Je suis nouvellement inscrite! Cela fait 3 mois que je vous lis, pour préparer mon voyage dans l'ouest américain l'été prochain.Grace à vous, j'ai trouvé des tonnes d'informations qui n'existent pas dans les guides. Un grand merci à tous.
J'ai posé une question il y a 2 jours mais n'ayant pas reçu bcp de réponses, je me permets d'insister car c'est mon 1er voyage dans cette contrée et je suis un peu perdue. Les personnes étant parties dans les même conditions que nous, pourraient-elles se manifester et me dire finalement ce qu'elles ont loué comme voiture pour faire ce périple.Bien que ça soit le reve de mes ados de véhiculer dans un Hummer, il faut quand meme rester raisonnable! Ca doit consommer 1 max ce genre d'engin
Je me demande s'il faut vraiment louer ce genre de voiture pour circuler ds l'ouest américain, à 4 personnes (aultes et grands ados) . Le coffre des SUV Standard (trailblazer, nissan x terra, ford explorer, toyota highlander, 4 runner, grand cherokee) est-il vraiment trop petit pour contenir les bagages de 4 personnes, la glacière, les éventuels achats faits ds 1 outlet?
Je précise que nous partons 25 jours en juillet dans l ouest american( nous atterrissons à san fransisco), que nous n'aurons pas de matériel de camping( nous dormons dans des hotels) et que nous comptons faire plusieurs pistes pour sortir un peu des sentiers battus ( oui, je sais à nos risques et périls ):la Cottonwood Canyon Road,
la House Rock Valley Road pour aller à The Wave(si ns avons la chance d'etre tirés au sort!), Wire Pass, Buckskin Gulch
à Alstrom Point au lac Powell
près de Moab : onion Creek Road
Shafer Trail + Potash Road
entre Moab et Torrey : Little Wild Horse Canyon
à Capitol Reef : Stricke Valley Overlook
Burr Trail Rock Road
Hole- in - the - Rock Road

Tout d'abord, n'oubliez pas que vous allez louer une categorie et pas un modele tres precis . certain vehicule sont un peu + grand que d'autres, mais vous ne pouvez pas etre sure du modele a 100 %. vous devez donc choisir la categorie :
la difference entre un SUV standard et full size, tient essentiellement dans la longueur totale, et donc espace dispo pour les valises.
ces valises que vous allez manipuler tous les jours ou presque a chaque arret et depart d'hotels.... un SUV standard peut etre suffisant en terme d'espace brut, mais sans plus. si vous voulez un peu plus de confort, en habitacle et en espace chargement je vous conseille un Full size, ce serez un peu plus a l'aise pour placer sacs et valises....
un monospace peu egalement vous convenir en terme d'espace et confort, mais si vous voulez sortir un peu des routes..
perso, je ne fais pas de rando hors piste, mais je peut supposer ( sans prendre trop de risque 😉) qu'un vehicule equipe en 4x4 serai utile. ceci pour vous rappeler qu'un SUV n'est pas systematiquement equipe 4x4. quelqu'il soit !
Donc, si vous voulez louer un vrai 4x4, ( 4 whell drive ) a moins qu'il ce ne soit expressement indique dans l'offre, il faudra imperativement le preciser dans votre demande de resa . ( attention sur les sites francais, certain en tendance a traduire SUV par 4x4, SUV c'est une gamme comme berline ou monospace...
en ce qui concerne le Hummer, il est evident que c'a consomme davantage qu' une petite citadine francaise 😛 mais pas plus que n'importe quel autre full size SUV !!! dans cette gamme vous trouvez Yukon, Tahoe, Durango, Expedition etc...
perso, MA voiture c'est un Suburban, ( encore + grand) et je consomme 15 mpg pas plus ni moins que ma copine qui navigue en Hummer .... ( on doit avoir des gout de luxe😎😎 )
la difference de cout, entre un Hummer et un autre vehicule se traduit au niveau de la location pas de la conso. et puis pour info, au tarif du jour, le prix de l'essence ici correspond a 0.40 euro !! si on raisonne juste en terme de cout, la conso d'un grand SUV ne fera pas exploser le budget. pour 25 jours prevoyez ~ 500 $ ( au tarif d'aujourdhui evidemment, a voir dans 6 mois ....)

Tu n'auras donc pas plus de réponses qu'il y a 2 jours ou que dans 1 mois. Tous les endroits que tu cites ont été abordés mille fois ainsi que les modéles de 4x4 ...

Ne vous chargez pas trop pour ce qui est des bagages. Des vêtements de rechange pour 3-4 jours sont amplement suffisants. Puisque vous allez dans des motels/hôtels, vous pourrez faire votre lessive sans aucune difficulté. Et si votre hôtels n'est pas équipé d'une "guest laundry", il y a des laveries un peu partout.
Faites juste provision de quarters !

oui, je me souviens d'avoir lu cette discussion sur ce forum (ben oui, avant d'embeter tout le monde avec les memes questions qui reviennent sans cesse, j' ai épluché tous les forums pour trouver la plupart des réponses aux questions que je me posais, quand ns ns sommes enfin décidés à préparer ns meme ce périple) C'est ainsi que j'ai découvert de nombreuses excursions dont on ne parle pas ds les guides ou si peu! Et tout cela nous a donné envie de nous aussi essayer....Est -ce trop présomptueux pour un 1er voyage????Vous me faites un peu peur....car non, ns ne sommes pas adeptes du tout de 4x4.... A vrai dire, ns n'en avons jamais conduit....Mais mes 2 grands en rêvent (25 et 21 ans) Et oui poue ce genre de voyage, ils se réjouissent de partir encore à cet age en famille!!!!!!!

1 - Pour échanger : OK si celui qui pose la question bosse un peu aussi ! Quand on me dit "Je lis tout depuis 3 mois " pour écrire une question déjà posée 100 fois avec toutes les réponses nécessaires .... et surtout " Ouinnnnnnn, ma question n'a pas eu de réponses alors je la re-re-repose 2 jours + tard "

Merci aussi aux auteurs d'autres sites comme roadtrippin.fr; usatourist.com, parcs.net, theusa.free.fr, usaandyou.free.fr, laudet.net ainsi qu'à ttes les personnes racontant leur voyage à leur retour. C'est d'ailleurs comme ça que j'ai fait ta connaissance, vazyvite, et que je rigolais tte seule devant mon écran en te lisant.C'est bien dommage d'avoir une si belle plume quand tu racontes tes peripéties et puis d'apostropher les gens de cette manière très grossière quand tu daignes répondre aux questions ds ce forum

et bien oui C'EST MOI QUI EST POSER LA QUESTION POUR LES VALISES. Je le dis haut et fort. Je n'ai pas honte désolé.
On m'a toujours appris qu'aucune question est stupide. Si tu n'as pas envie de répondre à des questions (ce qui est ton droit !) et bien n'y réponds pas au lieu d'être désagréable avec les gens (je ne suis pas le seul à le penser en lisant ce forum).
Pour les valises, et bien oui je ne suis jamais allé aux USA et je posais cette question dans le but de ne rien oublié (papier, appareils, adaptateur...). Mais tant fais pas pour moi je sais quand meme préparer mes valises ! je n'oublierais pas mes chaussures de marche !!!!

Ma remarque de l'autre jours sur l'expérience en 4x4 porte sur le constat que ce n'est qu'à mon 3 ème voyage que j'ai osé
m'aventurer sur ce genre de piste, plutôt des faciles, mais que je me suis trouvé un peu trop court pour certains passages
J'ai à mon programme cette année Apache trail, cottonwood, burr trail + Notom, cathedral valley et shafer trail, si les conditions sont bonnes
et si ça se passe bien - avec quelques apréhensions, mon expérience étant très limitée.

C'est vrai que je pars avec mes 3 grands enfants(25, 21, 17 ans). C'est sur que tte seule ou avec de jeunes enfants, je n'aurais pas osé me lancer ds un tel périple. Mais ns ne ferons sans doute pas ttes les pistes que j'ai citées, par manque de temps (ah, le temps.....). J'ai tout préparé, comme ça sur place, on aura le choix! Et puis si mon road book ne sert pas entièrement cette fois-ci, il me sera utile pour un 2ème voyage ( car en vs lisant tous, il semble qu'on attrappe vite le virus des States et qu'on n'a qu'une envie: celle d'y retourner......) En préparant ce voyage, je réalise un vieux rêve : mon mari nous avait tjs dit qu'il ns emmènerait ds cette contrée lointaine quand les enfants seraient grands. Décédé malheureusement bcp trop jeune, il n'a pas eu le temps d'exaucer un tel désir. Alors maintenant je mets tout mon coeur ds cette préparation pour faire de ce voyage un souvenir inoubliable.

Voilà! C'est fait. Grace à votre réponse très explicite qui m'a conforté ds mon choix, j'ai loué 1 dodge durango(ou similaire) par l'intermédiaire de Autoeurope.be (moins cher que .fr ou .com)
Ce modèle était meme moins cher que les SUV standards proposés!
764 euros pour 23 jours à partir de l'aéroport de San Francisco. Sans plein d'essence, Sans conducteur supplémentaire, ce qui n'est pas nécessaire puisque le 2ème conducteur est gratuit en Californie.
Quelqu'un pourrait- il me confirmer que cela est tjs valable quand on quitte la Californie avec la voiture louée pour visiter aussi le Nevada, l'Utah et l'Arizona???????
J'ai déjà loué plusieurs fois avec Autoeurope ( en Europe) et je n'ai jamais eu de problème. Mais d'habitude, je loue avec le réservoir essence plein et je dois rendre la voiture également avec le réservoir plein. Ai-je bien compris qu'Autoeurope change ses règles pour l'Amérique et qu'il faut rendre la voiture avec le réservoir vide????????

Juste en passant, je vois que tu vas aller sur Apache Trail : je te rassure, les qq tout petits km en gravier ne perturbent absolument pas la plus ordinaire des berlines !
Même au cas très peu probable de récent orage !
Pour les autres pistes, je n'ai aucune expérience donc motus !😛
Si vous ne réussissez jamais rien du premier coup, n'essayez pas le parachutisme !

Pas vraiment compté, mais 60km ça doit être la longueur totale de l'Apache Trail ! et le goudron va jusque Tortilla Flat et reprend un brin avant le Roosevelt Dam, de mémoire !
Si vous ne réussissez jamais rien du premier coup, n'essayez pas le parachutisme !
Le fait que ce soit sans le plein d'essence veut dire que tu dois rendre le réservoir plein, quand il y a l'option (payante ou non) plein d'essence, ça veut dire que indirectement tu paye l'essence qu'ils seront obligé de remettre quand tu rend la voiture, donc dans ce cas il vaut mieux la rendre vide. Mais là dans ton cas il faudra rendre le réservoir plein sinon il te sera facturé (bcp plus cher que le prix du marché!)
Je pense (mais attend confirmation) que le 2ème conducteur est aussi valable dans les autres états car il est noté sur ton contrat de location, la ligne du 2ème conducteur va pas s'effacer par magie au passage de la frontière entre la Ca et le Nv !!
Côté tarif ça me parait carrément bien placé!

Quant au 2ème conducteur, ça me semble aussi logique mais tt le monde a l'air de se tracasser, alors on finit par se poser des tas de questions pour etre sur d'etre en ordre en cas de pépins!!!!(aus states, on ne badinne pas avec la loi, on se méfie de leurs habitudes procédurières.....)

Tucson and the Pima Air & Space Museum:
Tombstone, Bisbee.

Still working on the program.

Round trip around the area via Flagstaff and Williams, or the Grand Canyon (already done) – we’ll decide on the spot.

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

After years of hoping, waiting, planning, then changing, saving, and searching for the best possible route... we're FINALLY off this summer for a 5-week road trip in the West.
I had planned a trip to Colorado in 2021 but canceled due to COVID, so with time passing and my eldest’s high school graduation approaching fast, I figured it was now or never!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?
Are there any other must-see spots or things we shouldn’t miss?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Travelers to the United States | Photo Now Mandatory Upon Entry and Exit | La Presse
I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
We found Emmanuelle and Isabelle, and wow, they were fantastic. It was just the two of us with them, so it was a truly VIP, ultra-personalized experience. They treated us like royalty from start to finish. These two live in Las Vegas and know the region like the back of their hand. The service was really personalized. They adapted to our pace and preferences, and we could stop whenever we wanted to take photos. It’s the luxury of being in a small private group—you’re not just a number on a big bus.
In short, we really felt like we were traveling with friends rather than professional guides. Everything’s included in the price (hotel pickup, meals, park entries, etc.), so the value for money is fair.
We loved it so much that we’re already planning to come back next year to explore other areas with them. I think we’ve caught the American West bug—it’s all we can think about, and we can’t wait to return.
