Guide and driver for Cairo

Hi there, We’re a family of 4 with two boys aged 12 and 10 traveling to Egypt in February. We’re spending 3 days in Cairo to take our time exploring the city and the sites before heading south.

-Is it necessary to have a guide to visit the GEM? Are audio guides available? -Do you have any contacts for drivers to organize a few transfers (Giza, Saqqara, Airport)? -Do you know a French-speaking guide who’s friendly, family-friendly, and good at making things exciting, with reasonable prices?

Hi Chouchou, as usual, I’ll tell you the details in private. That said, Happy New Year! Wishing you all the best, and hoping it’s off to a great start. 😉 Thoutmosis

Hi there, Spending time in Cairo is a great idea. There’s so much to discover.

* No info on the GEM, but don’t miss the Cairo Museum in Tahrir Square. An archaeological gem. * You can easily reach the Pyramids of Giza by metro plus a microbus—it’s a classic experience. For Saqqara or the airport, check with your hotel. * I’m not sure a full-day guide is really necessary in Cairo. Exploring, soaking it in, and getting a little lost are all part of the fun. I can suggest a few itineraries if you’d like.

Enjoy your adventure!

Thanks a ton, Sebastien, for your always invaluable tips.

Are there any public transport options to get from the GEM to the Giza Plateau?

Thanks in advance, Marie

Sorry, I don’t have any info on this topic. But given the distance (2-3 km), it’s likely. There’ll probably be tourist shuttles (more expensive than microbuses) in my opinion.

Hi there, It all depends on where you're staying in Cairo! ??? If it's within Cairo itself, you'll need to take Line 2 to Giza station. From there, you'll have to take a taxi or the minibuses. Just a heads-up, in the metro there are women-only carriages, so women should use those. Or you can take Uber or Careem (I never do that myself). Budget around 150 to 250 EGP depending on where you are. Thoutmosis
