Hi there, We’ll be staying in Marrakech for a few days soon and are looking for a serious and competent guide to show us around the Marrakech medina. We’ve searched without luck so far—could you help us out? Thanks in advance!

It’s easy to find a guide, for example by asking at your riad if you’re staying there.

The problem is that most guides earn extra on top of what you pay by taking a commission on the shops and restaurants they take you to. The risk is spending a lot of time in souvenir shops, eating at mediocre restaurants, and getting very few historical explanations about the medina.

I went there a year and a half ago, and the medina is easy to explore on your own by glancing at your smartphone’s GPS map from time to time. The city is safe—even if you don’t see them, there are plenty of plainclothes police officers—and vendors are much less pushy than they were 15–20 years ago.

Hi there! I found a guide with great reviews who offers different excursions off the typical tourist trails. I booked him for my next trip—his Medina tour lasts 4 hours. You can find him on Facebook. His name is Saïd Agozoul.
