Hi there, I’m finalizing our next trip to Malaysia and I’m a bit stuck for a few nights in Borneo—can you help? We arrive on July 23rd in Kuching, where we’ll stay for 5 nights (usual visits like Bako, etc.). After that, I’ve got a "6-night gap" before reaching SEPILOK, where we’ll stay for 4 nights (then the Perhentian Islands). Any ideas?

Hey,

Kota Kinabalu and the surrounding area could fill your gap.

Your post caught my attention a bit: for me, Sepilok is in the area advised against by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (see Sandakan on the map). https://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/conseils-aux-voyageurs/conseils-par-pays-destination/malaisie/

(I was dreaming of going to Borneo next summer with my kids—I’d started planning, including the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, but this put me off :/

Hello, We’re planning a 15-day trip to Borneo with three of us and are looking for local drivers in Kuching (for excursions to the parks) and Kota Kinabalu for transfers to Sandakan. Is it easy to find them through hotels once we’re there? Thanks in advance! Christine P

Hi there,

Between Kuching and Sepilok, you can take the coastal route from Kuching to Kota Kinabalu (avoid the towns of Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri—they don’t have much to offer). You could stop at either Gunung Mulu and the Pinnacles, the Niah Caves (a day trip south of Miri), or spend two days in Brunei before continuing. In Kota Kinabalu, the city itself isn’t great, but you can go snorkeling on the small islands just offshore (some, like Mamutik, are great for a family day out).

From KK, you can head to Kundasang to see Mount Kinabalu (it’ll take a full day). You could stay in the area, but there isn’t much to do. There are some nice beaches with hotels and chalets north of KK, but I think you’d need to rent a car or take a taxi.

From KK, you can also fly to Tawau (a boring town) near Semporna (about an hour’s drive), which is amazing for diving and snorkeling (the offshore islands are stunning, though the town itself is pretty grim). It’s easy to do in 2-3 days.

This part of Sabah is marked in red on the government’s travel advisory map, but I’ve never felt unsafe there. The Malaysian military keeps an eye on things, and locals know tourism (especially Chinese visitors) supports their livelihoods.

Have a great trip!

Hi,

Yes, it’s easy to find. Don’t hesitate to ask. There are also buses between some cities.

Hello,

I just posted my first question on the forum, and while reading your message, I think I’ve found part of the answer. I always travel alone with my two kids under 10, and I’m planning to visit Borneo this summer. My itinerary includes Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Sepilok, and ending in Semporna (staying 20 minutes outside the city since I’ve read it’s not recommended, and I can’t find any "decent" accommodation there). I’m a bit put off by the travel advisories from the foreign ministry, which discourage visiting this area. Do you think it’s still safe for a solo woman with kids? I only plan to do day trips for snorkeling with the kids.

I know there’s no such thing as zero risk, but I’m trying to find people who’ve been there very recently.

Thanks for your help!

Hello,

No security issues—I was in KK and Semporna last spring. Traveling with kids won’t be a problem. That said, for snorkeling, I’d recommend KK over Semporna because of the kids (Mamutik is very family-friendly). It’s actually one of the few things to do there, since KK doesn’t have much else that’s interesting. In Semporna, you’ll need to take organized tours that drop you in the middle of the water or on islands depending on where you go, and you’ll switch boats two or three times during the day. I don’t think that’s ideal for young kids. For accommodation in Semporna, you can either stay in town (the town itself is run-down and not charming, but it’s cheap) or in resorts on the small islands (which is expensive, and you’ll also depend on the tours sold by the hotels). I don’t know Sepilok or Sandakan.

Thanks for your quick reply! My kids are 8 years old—they did the Gili Islands last year (snorkeling and boat trips) and Lombok, which is why I thought I could try Semporna with them (for the beauty of the islands and the marine life :)) I’m well aware the journey will be a bit of an adventure :)

I’ll keep your recommendations for KK in mind. And thanks for reassuring me about safety—I’ve been traveling around Asia for 20 years, but this is my first trip with kids, so I’m a little nervous.

Thanks again! !
