Relaxing getaway and sightseeing in Essaouira in March?

Hi there!

I’d like to plan a week of "sun-soaked" relaxation in March, and based on my budget, I was thinking of Morocco—specifically Essaouira. I’ve got a few questions, just in case I’m getting the wrong idea about my trip: Do you know what the average weather is like at that time of year? Without going as far as swimming, is it still possible to enjoy the sunshine on walks or lounging on a deck chair? Since I’ve never been to Essaouira, is it a nice place to stay for a week (mixing sightseeing and relaxation)? Are the beaches pretty? Would you happen to know any addresses (like guesthouses or lodges) offering half-board or full-board, in a quiet spot? (With a garden to relax in, ocean views, or even a pool—fingers crossed!) At reasonable prices? (I have no idea what the price ranges are in Morocco.)

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hi there, March in Essaouira is pretty borderline for lounging in the sun! It's a fairly windy region, cooler than the surrounding areas, which is great in summer but less so at other times of the year. No swimming! If you're after some warmth, head down to Agadir instead.

A week in Essaouira: You can explore the city in 2 days max... plus one or two trips to nearby spots... so yes, it's doable, but you'll have plenty of downtime in a week! If that's what you're looking for, then no problem! You could also spend a day in Marrakech to pass the time...

The beach is a huge bay stretching several kilometers, pretty well set up... Nearby beaches: Sidi Kaouki (among others) to the south, Moulay Bousaktoun to the north, accessible by bus or shared taxis.

Accommodation: quiet, garden, pool, sea view—yes, but not at moderate prices! Affordable Essaouira: that’s a thing of the past!

Hi Hélène, I went to Essaouira last year at the end of February. As for the weather, you can easily sunbathe out of the wind on the terrace of the Riad or even at a café terrace. You can expect temperatures around 20 to 22°C. For sightseeing, there isn’t much to see, but the walks in the medina are very pleasant since there are no cars, carts, or even bikes—just pedestrians. The medina is very clean compared to Marrakech, but the latter is much livelier. The beaches are huge and all sandy. If you enjoy beach walks, you won’t find anything better. You should also stroll along the old port—it’s a real pleasure with all the seagulls around. As for accommodation, I can recommend the Riad de l’Ayel. The owner is French, very friendly, and even calls you to help plan your trip. The Riad is lovely, and you can even have dinner there for 12 € (starter, main course, and dessert). Just search for "Riad de l’Ayel" on your search engine to visit their site: www.riadlayel.com. In March, it’s still low season—a double room for a week costs 315 € including breakfast. If you’d like, you can spend a day in Marrakech. The Supratours bus is very comfortable and safe (I’ve tried both buses and taxis over two different years, and the bus is much better). Plus, it’s a bargain at 5.50 € for the trip. A great itinerary would be 4 days in Marrakech and 3 days in Essaouira. I’m a huge fan of Marrakech, but I always visit another nearby city. For March 2009, I’m doing Marrakech and Skoura in southern Morocco. If Marrakech interests you, I can give you more info too. Have a great trip and enjoy the change of scenery in Morocco! kikidan

hi there for Essaouira in March, it’s sunny and windy as mentioned but when it comes to accommodation, it’s different from what’s said here—those who know Essaouira well won’t argue with me

You can find super furnished apartments with satellite TV, a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, stove, kitchen utensils), living room, bedroom, hot shower, etc.—all for 250 MAD per day

You also have the option to hire a housekeeper who can cook and clean for a modest daily rate (around 50 MAD for half a day)

If you want the details, just ask LARBI

hi there Like Alibaba, I also think Agadir is a better choice for warmth (I swim in March... it's true I'm not sensitive to the cold). From this city, you can easily explore some really beautiful sites like Tafraout, Imouzer, and of course, make your way to Essaouira.... have a great trip francia

hi,

I agree with Alibaba and Shongai—if you're looking for warmth, it's better to go to Agadir and take excursions from there.

Definitely not Agadir! It's a completely artificial city, dedicated to mass tourism and has nothing Moroccan about it. Unless your dream is to spend your time on a beach lined with concrete buildings, each uglier than the last, it's better to avoid Agadir, which has nothing Moroccan about it, and opt for the very beautiful Essaouira, with a few days in Marrakech as well, for example. Agadir is the worst of what Morocco has to offer.

Hi, we went to Essaouira in November—it’s a really pretty city surrounded by ramparts with a beautiful medina. One downside: there’s a *lot* of wind. I don’t know what the weather’s like in early spring, though.

Hi there! 😊 I’m so glad you enjoyed Essaouira—it’s truly a beautiful city with a charming medina and a unique atmosphere. It’s true that the wind can be quite strong, especially in November. For spring, particularly in March, the weather is usually milder, with pleasant temperatures around 18-22°C. There might still be some wind, but it’s more manageable. It’s an ideal time to explore the city without the summer crowds.
