Questions about the Canadian Rockies solo road trip

Hello fellow travelers,

I’m considering a road trip (rental car) to explore the Canadian Rockies in September 2026, starting in Calgary and ending with about 10 days in Vancouver and the surrounding area. (Two weeks in the Rockies and a little under two weeks in Vancouver and nearby.)

I’d like to say that being a woman traveling alone doesn’t really bother me. That’s not the issue. Being a woman is just how it is, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon, but traveling solo is something I could fix by finding travel companions. However, I had a not-so-great experience in India with two girls who were total strangers at first and turned out to be quite annoying, so I’m a bit put off by the idea now.

My question is simple, assuming I do this trip alone: is it worth sticking *only* to driving? I have **zero** sense of direction—with a map, I’m hopeless. So, is it realistic to think, "With my GPS, I’ll just drive from Calgary to Vancouver and see what I see," since I don’t see myself hiking alone? I’m not easily scared, but I wouldn’t feel confident doing that solo. Unless all the sightseeing is done with a guide (but then, hello, the cost—my budget isn’t exactly overflowing).

What do you all think? Thanks for taking the time to read this. Take care and happy travels. Cheers, Régine

Hi Régine,

With a GPS, you don’t need a sense of direction!

To think it over, there’s plenty of info in this forum thread.

hi,

because I don’t see myself doing the hikes all alone—I’m not a scaredy-cat, but I just wouldn’t feel confident. Régine

one way or another, Lake Louise and Banff are pretty busy, so you won’t really be alone unless you head deep into the national park. As for getting around, it’s pretty easy to navigate in Canada—everything’s well signposted

Thanks Mathews for encouraging me to change my perspective. Best regards and have a wonderful holiday season. Régine

Good evening, I’m in the same boat as you when it comes to these Canadian Rockies. The idea of going and just making photo stops—since hiking alone can be tricky—isn’t exactly the Rockies I’d imagined, but I’ve wanted to explore them for so long that I’m still considering it. Have a great evening

Better to travel alone than with bad company! No need to worry about directions except maybe on the highways near big cities. The only real snag is accommodation since the price of a single room is often the same as for two, and even the most modest motels are quite pricey.

The road from Calgary to Jasper is absolutely stunning, with frequent scenic stops and opportunities for short, well-marked hikes. The same goes for Victoria Island—it’s really pleasant and bigger than you’d think.

Have a great trip!

Xavier, I’m looking into the RV option to solve the accommodation and food issue. But I’m worried the prices might be really steep. Gotta check it out.

Hi Patoon, I’d say that for the driving part, no problem—with a GPS, the car practically drives itself on Canada’s beautiful roads 😉

For the hiking part, in the Rockies’ national parks, the trails are very well marked, and there’s something for everyone, from 1-hour hikes to full-day treks. It’d be a real shame to go there and not walk a little. The "must-do" hikes (but crowded in summer, of course): the summit of Mount Sulphur in Banff, the Lake Louise loop, Sunwapta Falls, Athabasca Falls, Pyramid Lake in Jasper (though check if it’s worth it—everything burned two years ago). A bit more challenging: Sentinel Pass from Moraine Lake (about 5 hours. In autumn, the colors are stunning, so September is perfect).

You’ll be there in September, so way fewer people than in summer. And accommodation prices are much more affordable. In Jasper, there are lots of B&Bs, while Banff has more hotels and youth hostels. Worth checking prices. Renting an RV means you might not be able to access some smaller roads or parking areas. Personally, I prefer renting a car—easier to drive and maintain—and alternating between camping and B&Bs.

But from mid-September onward, the weather can bring snow. So make sure to pack the right clothes! And check the "weather channel" every morning before heading out.
