Luggage security, water, and mosquitoes in the Philippines – questions

We’re planning a trip to the Philippines from April 22 to May 8, 2026. Flight from Geneva with a layover in Turkey and Manila. Our itinerary: Angeles – Busuanga – Palawan…

The Philippines are a dream destination, but is it possible to travel there safely? I’ve heard that checked luggage often gets lost, tap water isn’t safe to drink, and mosquitoes are everywhere.

For water, what’s the best solution to carry in a backpack? Is a filtering water bottle 100% reliable?

For mosquitoes, should we treat our clothes with repellent? Are you vaccinated against hepatitis A, malaria, or dengue? Or is there an oral treatment to take?

Thanks for your feedback!

Hello, The Philippines is a safe country unless you go to parts of Mindanao, which doesn’t seem to be your case. Regarding water, no, it’s not drinkable, but you can find bottled water everywhere. A reusable water bottle will do if you refill it with bottled water—many hotels have water dispensers (5-liter jugs with a pump). As for mosquitoes, well, yes, like in any tropical country, they’re numerous and present. You don’t need to treat your clothes with repellent, but having mosquito repellent is a must, and wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants will do the trick. It’s the same as anywhere else. Finally, about luggage, I’ve never had any problems. This applies to all airports, not just in the Philippines. I don’t know where you found your information, but it’s not very accurate regarding luggage, at least. The hepatitis A vaccine is always a plus but not mandatory. For vaccinations in general, I recommend contacting a travel health clinic—they’ll be better equipped to advise you on vaccines and/or preventive treatments based on your health and destination. Of course, there’s no such thing as zero risk... Have a great trip and enjoy this wonderful country!

Hi there,

I traveled through the Philippines 10 years ago, and we didn’t lose any luggage.

The water isn’t safe to drink, but that’s the case in many countries. Except in high-end hotels, you should always drink bottled water and brush your teeth with it too.

I don’t remember mosquitoes being a big issue, but the easiest thing is to use local mosquito repellent and protect yourself at dusk.

Have a great trip—yes, the Philippines are totally worth it ;)

For the past 15 years, I've taken an average of ten flights a year to the Philippines, and I've never lost a single piece of luggage! For mosquitoes, in tropical regions, you protect yourself with mosquito repellent. The OFF brand available locally is effective and inexpensive. You can find purified bottled water everywhere. Personally, I drink Le Minerale mineral water. I'm vaccinated against hepatitis A and B and tetanus. If you're bitten by a dog or scratched by a cat, go straight to the hospital to get vaccinated against rabies. No major security issues. In Manila, in certain neighborhoods, you should avoid wearing flashy jewelry, but that's the case in most big cities around the world. Have a great trip!

Hello, Thank you for your feedback. I read your 2016 post "dengue is a reality you shouldn’t ignore! I’m currently going through a painful experience with it in Port Barton, and apparently, I don’t have a very severe form." I’ll get the hepatitis A vaccine. For the other vaccines, since they have a lot of side effects, I’ll just buy mosquito repellent instead. When I traveled to the United States, I got travel health insurance. Should I do the same for the Philippines? I’ve never traveled to Asia before. What kind of luggage should I prioritize, knowing I’ll be doing the Coron/El Nido cruise? I assume space on the boats must be limited. Thanks in advance. Catherine

hi, get the tetanus vaccine too if you haven’t already. rabies isn’t given as a preventive. dengue is spread by the tiger mosquito, which bites all day long—not just in the evening or morning. in northern Palawan, there’s no malaria. for health insurance, I just use the one from Visa Premier. for luggage, the boats are big and there’s plenty of space. in May, it’ll be hot, so you won’t need much. shoes take up the most room. personally, I never wear flip-flops—they’re such a giveaway for Western tourists! 😊

Hi there,

Two trips to the Philippines in 2019 and 2025 (check out the trip reports on this site). Lots of transfers by plane and boat—no issues with luggage at all. For the Coron-El Nido cruise, your luggage doesn’t matter; it’s stored in the hold and inaccessible during the trip. It’s best to have a waterproof bag with the essentials (toiletries, a change of clothes, towels, and valuables). As for mosquitoes, it’s no worse than anywhere else in a tropical country.
