Hi everyone, After finishing the season (gîte on the Compostela trail), it’s our turn to hike! We’re heading to Réunion for 6 weeks, then Mauritius, and maybe Rodrigues. We leave on November 5th. What are the must-do hikes, starting with easy ones to get our legs back in shape (yep, 7 months of inactivity!) and then a bit more challenging, but most importantly, no risk of vertigo. Sorry, that’s just how it is—can’t do it 😅. As for gîtes, should we book a few days in advance, or do we need to plan now? And what about transport? Should we rent a vehicle instead? We’d love any tips you have. Thanks! Philippe and Corinne

Hello,

It’s not original, but my favorite part was the 3 days / 2 nights spent in the Cirque de Mafate. I actually kind of regretted not extending it by a day or two, but we were already pretty tired. There are several access points to Mafate. The most common one is probably the Col des Boeufs from the Cirque de Salazie. However, friends who live on Réunion didn’t recommend that route, and several locals in Mafate confirmed that La Nouvelle doesn’t really feel very "Mafate" anymore. Personally, I entered via the Canalisation des Orangers. It’s very easy since it’s almost flat, and the view is fantastic (even if some find it a bit monotonous—I didn’t). Since I wanted to stay in a double room (which are few) rather than a dorm, I booked the gîtes more than a month in advance in Mafate. Elsewhere on the island, I often booked our accommodation just a day or two ahead, but that depends on the time of year!

In Cilaos, the most classic hike is probably the one leading to La Chapelle.

In Salazie, many people hike up to the Gîte de Bélouve from Hell-Bourg, with the option to continue to the Trou de Fer.

Of course, climbing the Piton de la Fournaise is a must. Personally, it wasn’t my favorite hike.

The Piton des Neiges is also a classic. However, I didn’t climb it because it’s known to be quite difficult, and I was told the view isn’t the best.

Another nice hike: the descent to Grand Bassin from Bois Court. Though you do have to climb back up afterward!!!

For exceptional views: the Grand Bénare from Le Maïdo, or the Roche Écrite.

There are so many other possibilities. Réunion is truly a fantastic playground for those who love hiking.

Hi there,

I visited Réunion Island in November 2023.

It’s an amazing destination for hiking, especially spots like Le Trou de Fer, Roche Verre Bouteille, Grand Bord, and the Dolomieu crater.

Here’s a really useful site listing hikes on the island:
