Hi everyone, After already exploring the West, which was amazing, I’ve got a new plan—I’d like to visit Texas and Tennessee. I want to start in Las Vegas, revisit Monument Valley, and head toward Dallas, stopping in Albuquerque and other cool spots along the way. Then, I’ll leave Dallas for Nashville, with several stops in between—any suggestions on where to go? Do you think 20 days is enough for this trip? Thanks for your input!

Hi Valérie, If you enjoy driving, no worries—plus, it's always fun to discover tourist spots along the way. Amarillo (Texas) is a great stop before reaching Fort Worth. There’s Western activities at Stockyards and the stunning Amon Carter Museum (free!). I skipped Dallas. Then, you might want to stop in Memphis before heading to Nashville, the temple of country music—such a great memory. I stayed at the Knights Inn, not far from downtown—you can walk there. Cross the bridge over the Cumberland River for an amazing view of Nashville, day or night. How are you planning to get back to Las Vegas? Maybe via Oklahoma City and Dodge City for the Western museum and show, then through Colorado or New Mexico again. Hope this helps with your road trip! Monument Valley is definitely worth two visits.

Thanks for your reply! But I was thinking of leaving from Nashville—I didn’t want to do a loop. I’d like to start from Las Vegas, revisit Monument Valley, then head through Texas toward Memphis before leaving from Nashville. Do you think this route is interesting? Or maybe do a loop from Nashville, go down the Mississippi, pass through New Orleans, then head back through Texas to leave from Dallas—though that might be tight in 20 days. Thanks for your input!

Hi Valérie, I didn’t quite get everything. Your flight arrives in Las Vegas, and you’re leaving by plane from another city—Nashville or Fort Worth/Dallas? That’s right, and you’re planning a one-way rental with a drop-off fee. That can add up depending on the rental company. It’s usually cheaper to return the car to the same airport. Prices can also vary a lot between airports. Personally, I often book through Auto Europe—they have good vehicles with insurance included. You can cancel or modify, and they respond in French, which is helpful if there’s an issue. In August 2022, I did a 4,934-mile (7,940 km) road trip from Chicago over 20 days, passing through Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, Cheyenne (a lovely city in Wyoming), Colorado, Kansas (don’t miss the small Dalton Museum in the south near Meade, close to Oklahoma), northern Texas (people drive *very* fast there—same speed on highways and regular roads, which is different from Utah). Then: Louisiana, Mississippi (beautiful colonial house in Holly Springs), Tennessee (whiskey distillery), Kentucky, Indiana, and back to Chicago. There you go—if there are two of you driving, it might be better. Here’s my experience in case it helps. Happy planning (preparing your road trip is already part of the adventure)!

"On the road again" well-known tune. A little stopover/break in Austin (Texas) and its surroundings, maybe even Lubbock (and for good reason), wouldn’t be bad either. Though with Trump, who knows?😉 Happy trails
