Hi there,

I’m looking for information about the island of Madagascar and Nosy Be. I’d like to spend 10 days there in February. Could you recommend some hotels and must-see places? Is it better to rent a car or a motorbike? What budget should I plan for? We’ll be a group of 4 people.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hi there! So you're planning to spend 10 days in Nosy Be?

If that's the case, I’d recommend—if you haven’t already—flying directly to Nosy Be (Fascene International Airport) instead of landing in Tana. Ethiopian Airlines offers competitive fares and perfectly acceptable travel conditions (when coming from France, you usually have a layover and overnight stay in Addis, fully covered and well-organized by Ethiopian).

With 10 days in Nosy Be, you’ll have plenty to do and see without getting bored at all. Island excursions: Nosy Tanikely, Nosy Sakatia, Nosy Komba, and Nosy Iranja. You can also visit other islands like the Mitsio, which are further away. These trips are great for walks, relaxation, and snorkeling or even diving. Speaking of diving, it’s an activity you can do even outside these islands—there are several dive centers on the island. On Nosy Be itself, you’ve got Lokobe Park, ylang-ylang plantations, waterfalls, Mont Passot, a few hikes, sunset views, the corniche, the market, and the stunning old buildings in Hell-Ville, etc. You can also head to mainland Madagascar and visit places like Ambanja to see cocoa plantations and how the pods are processed, or head toward the Sambirano region for another beautiful waterfall.

Depending on where you stay, renting a car might be necessary (for example, if your hotel is off the beaten path and a bit away from the main spots), but honestly, you can usually get by with taxis or tuk-tuks since the island isn’t huge and there are plenty of transport options without needing to rent. You can also rent quads or scooters, especially in Hell-Ville, Ambatoloaka, and Andilana. But it’s manageable from other areas too, with or without help from your hotel.

For accommodations, there’s a wide range of prices and options. Do you want a hotel, B&B, or rented lodging? By the sea or inland? In a lively area or somewhere quieter (Ambatoloaka and Andilana are the main spots for nightlife)? High-end services or basic comfort?

Check out Google Maps, Tripadvisor, or Booking to scout locations and shortlist places to stay. Then you can ask for more specific details. After that, it’s best to call the places directly where you’d like to book.

It can be really nice—or even *very* nice—to stay in one of the hotels on Nosy Komba or Nosy Sakatia. The tranquility is guaranteed since you’re on an island within an island (an island squared, or even cubed, since Madagascar itself is an island). It might be a bit trickier and slightly more expensive to organize some excursions (though not always), but it’s definitely a unique experience.

The cost of your trip will really depend on how many excursions you plan to do. Some are quite affordable, like Mont Passot or visiting plantations (and of course, exploring Hell-Ville), while others are a bit pricier, like diving or trips to certain islands (especially Nosy Iranja).

But if you budget around 100 € per night for accommodation and 50 € per day for transport, that should give you a rough average estimate. Add meals and extra activities, and adjust based on your comfort level and how many days you’ll need a taxi or rental. For a group of 5 (including 3 adults), doing quite a few excursions (Nosy Iranja, Nosy Tanikely, Nosy Sakatia, plantations, Mont Passot, Hell-Ville, etc.), we spent around 2200 € all-inclusive (excluding flights) for about 15 days.
