Hi everyone, I hope it's okay to reach out about a project I’m really excited to make happen. So, I’m 16 now and will turn 18 in 2022. Once I come of age, I’ll have access to some money that will let me fulfill one of my biggest dreams: visiting South Korea. I wanted to ask those of you who’ve been lucky enough to go or who know the country for some advice. First, I’m planning to go for 3 weeks, but since it’ll be my first solo trip, I was wondering how much I should budget for food over those 3 weeks. Next, if any of you have done a "tourist circuit" there, what’s the average cost, and which cities (aside from Seoul, of course ;)) should I prioritize visiting? Je voulais savoir si pour les quartiers comme Sinjuku ou Shibuya on pouvait les faire en une demi-journée ou plus la journée ? Car je souhaite faire les deux quartiers ainsi que Asakusa, Akihabara et Odaiba, est-ce jouable ?

A templestay isn’t just for foreign tourists—on the booking site, I saw that some temples are more geared toward foreigners, with English-speaking monks.

I was wondering if it’s still worth it, especially in temples where the monks don’t speak English?

Bonjour, Nous faisons un trip/voyage Asie fin avril (on est 2 en couple, avec un sac à dos) JAPON > CORÉE DU SUD > CHINE. Sur env 3 semaines. Nous voulons passer d'un pays à l'autre en bateau, de préférence un ferry, de nuit. On a l'impression que le bateau de nuit entre FUKUOKA et BUSAN n'était plus ? Idem pour celui entre SAKAIMINATO et DONGHAE ?

De même, pour quitter la CORÉE vers la CHINE, depuis INCHEON ou PYEONGTAEK, il semblerait que des lignes de ferry n'existent plus ?

Bonjour, voici un petit compte-rendu de mon voyage au Japon en compagnie de mes 3 enfants (20, 18 et 14 ans). Voyage avec KLM au départ de Bruxelles, via Amsterdam. Arrivée à Osaka le 25 au matin, sous le soleil, récupération de nos bagages, on met dans le sac à dos ce qu'il nous faut pour 2 nuits et on fait envoyer nos bagages à Kyoto pour dans 2 jours via compagnie JAL, on se dirige vers la gare toute proche et on fait activer notre JR pass pour le lendemain, train vers Osaka, on monte au sommet de Abeno Harukas, déjeuner et ensuite balade quartier Shinsekai. Installation à l'hôtel, petite sieste puis diner quartier Dotonbori. J'aurais bien voulu monter au dessus de l'Umeda sky building en soirée mais les enfants étaient "morts". 26 : départ vers Hiroshima. Visite du parc de la paix. Devant le monument des enfants, un groupe d'écoliers en train de chanter, assez émouvant ! Visite du mémorial ainsi que du musée : très bien fait. C'est préférable de comprendre l'anglais pour lire tous les panneaux explicatifs. Ensuite départ vers Miyajima. Là nous avions loué un ryokan rien que pour nous 4 ! Très très bien. On pose nos sacs à dos puis balade au mont Misen. Montée par l'est, descende par l'ouest, très bel endroit. Miyajima le soir et le matin, c'est vraiment calme ! ça vaut la peine d'y passer la nuit. 27 : visite du sanctuaire d'Itsukushima, du temple Daisho-in et du sanctuaire Senjokaku, on reprend le bateau fin de matinée. Après midi visite château d'Himeji. Magnifique château en bois récemment rénové, pas de trop de monde en plus. Soir, arrivée à Kyoto .

Lors de la préparation du 1er voyage l'an dernier, le Tohoku était une des régions que je souhaitais vraiment découvrir mais il a fallu faire des choix en tenant compte du parcours global.

Bref, je me demande si le budget à prévoir en général et pour les hébergements au Tohoku est moins élevé que dans les autres régions vu que moins touristique, tout type de logement confondus ?

Quelle est la meilleure saison pour visiter cette région ? Sachant que je ne me vois pas conduire sur des routes étroites avec de la neige ?

Pour les onsens, est ce dans le nord ou sud de cette région que les onsens sont les plus beaux en termes d'environnement paysages ?

This coming October or November, we’re planning our first trip to Japan. The only downside is we’ll only have two weeks off.

For this first visit, I’m thinking of sticking to the Kyoto and Osaka area… saving Tokyo for another trip. Do you think that’s a good choice for a first-time visit?

I’ve put together a little itinerary below to get some feedback from those in the know. I’m only counting the days we’re actually there, not travel days.

Day 1: Kyoto Ginkaku-ji – Philosopher’s Path with stops at a few shrines temples Eikan-dō and Nanzen-ji visit to the Samurai Ninja Museum in the late afternoon

Day 2: Kyoto Fushimi Inari (allow 4 hours for the hike through the park) visit to Sanjūsangen-dō temple Shōseien garden participate in a tea ceremony

Day 3: Kyoto Kiyomizu-dera temple stroll through the historic district up to Kennin-ji temple visit Kennin-ji temple Yasaka-jinja shrine and Gion district in the late afternoon return to the hotel via Pontochō Street

Day 4: Kyoto visit Kinkaku-ji and Nijō Castle visit the Imperial Palace gardens end the day in the shopping streets (Shibkyogoku and Teramachi, among others)

Day 5: Kyoto Arashiyama area Togetsukyo Bridge, walk along the river, visit the Bamboo Forest explore the area up to Otagi Nenbutsu-ji temple

Day 6: Kyoto hike from Kibune to Kurama

Day 7: Kyoto day trip to Nara (full day)

Day 8: stroll around Kyoto before heading to Osaka

Day 9: Osaka Katsuo-ji temple, then head to Minoh Falls and hike back via the Minoh Trail end the day in the Osaka Castle area

Day 10: Osaka Himeji Castle and an afternoon in Osaka

Day 11: Osaka Osaka and return to the airport in the late afternoon for the flight home

Do you think this itinerary is doable? Are some days too relaxed or too packed? I was thinking of adding a trip to Lake Biwa and Uji, but in that case, I’d have to cut some things. Are those places worth dropping some of the planned spots? And if so, which ones would you recommend cutting or shortening?

I’m planning to return to Japan for 15 days in April. This will be my second trip there. I’m starting to think about my itinerary.

I arrive in Tokyo in the evening and will spend one night there before taking the train to Hiroshima. I’ll stay in Hiroshima for 2 nights. Then, I’m heading to Kyoto (there are still so many beautiful things I want to see there), and I think I’ll stay for 3 nights. I also want to go back to Nara to visit the Pink Temple (probably in the morning before heading back to Kyoto).

And after that? I’d like to return to Hakone to try and catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji (I didn’t see it last time—it was cloudy). I’m thinking of staying one night there, probably in Odawara.

And then? I’ll head back to Tokyo and take the train to explore the surrounding areas and spend the day at some sites?

While in Tokyo, I want to visit Yokohama. I went to Kamakura last time and really loved it, but I don’t think I’ll go back.

I’ll end my trip in Tokyo, with my second-to-last night at the Muji Hotel and my last night near the airport.

That’s the plan so far—I’m open to your suggestions and itinerary tips!

What a joy to be back on this forum that I’ve browsed for so many years :-)!

I’m heading to Japan with my partner in November 2025. This will be my second trip there and his first.

I was planning to go from Tokyo to Matsumoto, which I haven’t visited before, and from there, check out Shirahone Onsen and then hike from Magome to Tsumago. However, after reading several travel journals, I’ve realized that the village of Shirakawa-go and its surroundings look amazing. Back in 2006, I visited Takayama, which I loved, but I don’t want to stay there again.

To visit the places mentioned above (Shirahone Onsen, Shirakawa-go, Magome, and Tsumago), I’m thinking that a car might be more convenient than public transport, especially for getting from Shirakawa-go to Magome. Could you confirm if that’s the case? If so, is it easy to rent a car for a few days to do a loop starting from Matsumoto?

Dans 2 ou 3 ans (en espérant que le coronavirus soit passé depuis longtemps), je compte faire avec ma mère un second voyage au Japon, durant environ 3 ou 4 semaines vers mai-juin. En effet, au premier, nous étions restés 20 jours à Tokyo et ses alentours, c'était vraiment magique. Malheureusement, il y avait beaucoup trop de touristes (comme on pouvait s'y attendre) et on aimerait bien retenter l'expérience mais d'une manière différente. On a envie de parcourir la campagne japonaise et même parler avec les habitants. Donc surtout pour voir un Japon plus rural et loin de la ville si possible et dans des zones avec peu de touristes. La question de la langue ne se pose pas dans le sens où j'apprends intensivement le japonais depuis maintenant 1½ et que dans 2 ans j'aurais sûrement un bon niveau (en plus de cela j'étudie également l'anglais). C'est pourquoi je voulais avoir vos envies concernant les destinations possibles. On envisage: - d'atterrir à l'aéroport du Kansai pour visiter la région quitte à rester par là (on m'a parlé de Shizuoka notamment ou bien de Nara) on hésite pour Kyoto et Osaka, tous deux très fréquentés - ou bien, d'atterrir à l'aéroport du Kansai mais repartir soit en train ou en avion vers le Kyuushu et/ou le Shikoku  - ou sinon, d'atterrir à un des aéroports de Tokyo pour visiter les Alpes japonaises

Personnellement nous avons réfléchi aux modes de transports et notre cœur balance pour la voiture (liberté de déplacements dans les campagnes) mais peut-être aussi le train ou le bus. Au niveau de l'administratif, nous nous sommes renseignés (pour le changement de permis de voiture, etc.), donc il nous faut juste nous décider pour les destinations.

en recherchant déjà sur booking, nous avons trouvé une petite villa de 80 m² très proche de la gare de Shibuya avec deux chambres, sdb, salon, cuisine, ect... le propriétaire nous en demande 100 € / nuit, pensez vous que ce soit une bonne affaire, ou est ce que nous pouvons encore attendre un peu, pour peut être trouver une meilleur affaire !

Bonjour tout le monde Au cours de notre croisière en mars prochain, nous aurons une escale à Kobé, de 9 à 19 h. J'aime bien, quand cela est possible, visiter par moi-même.. Pour celles et ceux qui connaissent ou ont déjà fait escale à Kobé, le port est-il loin de la ville ? Peut-on s'y rendre facilement ? Et est-il possible de découvrir la ville par soi-même ? Bonjour tout le monde, Nous allons passer quatre jours à Tokyo en avril prochain, et j'hésite entre deux hôtels, situés dans les quartiers de Ginza pour l'un et Shinjuku pour l'autre. Pourriez-vous me dire quel serait le meilleur moyen de rejoindre l'aéroport international d'Haneda, pour le retour en France.. J 'avoue que je galère un peu pour m' y retrouver entre trains, métro, bus express.. Je sais que nous ne prendrons pas de taxi, trop onéreux. I just lightened my wallet by 3000 € for 3 tickets: Paris > Tokyo > Osaka > Paris (well, not just mine—I’m exaggerating, there are two of us). For my daughter’s 10th birthday, we’re heading to Japan—it’s her "decade gift," though I thought she’d pick London🏴‍☠️. But I’ve been dreaming of going back to Japan since my 2013 trip, so I’ll admit this trip is (a lot) for me too. We’re traveling during school holidays, so the ticket prices are unfortunately sky-high. Maybe I could’ve gotten a better deal if I’d waited, but who knows... oh well, it’s done now. We leave at the end of October, so we still have a few months to prepare. That said, I’d rather start early to make sure we don’t miss anything (like the Ghibli Museum—I couldn’t go last time, and anyway, I’ll have to wait until September to book). Last time, there were three adults, so it was pretty straightforward. Eleven years later, well, now it’s two adults with a 10-year-old😛.

So I’m wondering how many days to spend in Tokyo. My daughter idealizes the city (that’s why she wants to go to Japan), and she’s really drawn to Japanese culture and food. Actually, what first got her interested in Japan were all the *kawaii* character products... Tokyo is such a fascinating city, but it can also be exhausting—especially for a kid, and I’m not sure what to expect. Beyond Tokyo, honestly, I’m not entirely sure. I was thinking of Hakone and maybe stopping by Fujikyu Highlands. Then heading down to Osaka for a few days in Kyoto before flying home (our return flight is from Osaka). We only have 11 days there (not counting the arrival day, and since our flight leaves at 11:30 PM on departure day, we’ll have the whole day), so it’s not a ton of time. I already spent a week in Kyoto on my last trip (huge crush on it), and I’d love to have two months there, but... well, you know how it is.

For example: 5 days in Tokyo 2 days in Hakone 4 days in Osaka/Kyoto

What do you think? If you’ve done this trip with kids, do you have any tips for family-friendly accommodations in Tokyo and Hakone? My daughter would love to try an onsen. We have a decent budget, but it’s not unlimited. We’d like to book as we go to spread out the costs a bit.

Voici une ébauche de mon itinéraire, j' aimerais avoir vos avis sur celui çi. Arrivée le 25/03 à Fukuoka 3nuits Départ le 28 pour Yanagawa, kurume, yame 3nuits Départ le 31 pour Kumamoto 2nuits Départ le 02 pour Kagoshima 2nuits Retour le 04 à Fukuoka 4nuits (Visite de Beppu, Usiki, Itoshi, Hoshino et Kitakyushu)

Pensez-vous qu'il soit possible de tout visiter? Je ne sais pas trop comment organiser mon itinéraire par rapport aux distances des villes. Mes centres d'intêrets sont la visites de temples, les toris sur la mer, les rizières , les plantations de thé, être proche des habitants, la nature...

Je cherche aussi un ryokan assez sympa mais pas hors de prix mais je ne sais pas dans quel endroit il vaut mieux le prendre.

Nous aimerions partir au Japon en septembre prochain et si possible sans agence! Nous avons déjà beaucoup voyagé à travers le monde de cette manière mais, nous étions beaucoup plus jeunes et ''ce n'était pas au Japon''. Mes questions sont d'ordres pratiques, à savoir : Le Japon se visite de manière itinérante, donc refaire les bagages tous les deux ou trois jours et prendre le train ou le bus etc, ! Si l'on se trouve à Tokyo par exemple, comment fait 'on ? un taxi , un bus ou autre mais pour se rendre où et à quel endroit ? Il doit y avoir une multitude de gares ou d'arrêts de bus dans cette immense ville ou l'anglais n'est pas courant ? Ne perdons nous pas trop de temps à chercher ce que l'on doit faire et comment le faire ? Est-ce vraiment pratique pour des personnes de 70 ans , même si l'on est en pleine forme… C'est vraiment la chose qui me turlupine, c'est devoir être sur le trottoir sans vraiment être sur de trouver de l'aide et de se perdre . Le Japon, ce n'est pas New-York ou Paris voir même Bangkok, c'est vraiment un endroit des plus dépaysant qui ne ressemble à aucun autre endroit dans le monde. Je voulais ajouter que nous sommes très très visite, nous prenons tout notre temps pour chaque endroit donc les voyages en groupe ne sont pas notre tasse de thé ! Bref ... 12/05: Arrivée à Osaka à 12h40 + Osaka 13/05: Osaka 14/05: Osaka 15/05: Départ pour Kyoto (matin) + Kyoto 16/05: Kyoto 17/05: Kyoto 18/05: Nara (activation du JRPASS) 19/05: Himeji (château) + Okayama (château + jardin) + fin de journée à Kurashiki 20/05: Départ pour Hiroshima (matin) + Hiroshima 21/05: Miyajima 22/05: Départ pou Tokyo (matin) + Tokyo 23/05: Tokyo 24/05: Tokyo (fin de validité du JRPASS) 25/05: Tokyo 26/05: Tokyo + Départ à 22h

J'ai bien conscience que cet itinéraire est plutôt classique mais après tout ce sera une première pour nous. Je ne sais pas si la construction de celui-ci est cohérent, j'ai notamment des doutes pour le 19/05 (trop de trajet? journée trop chargée?) et le 22/05 (trajet Hiroshima-Tokyo trop long?). J'aimerai également passer une journée à Hakone, pensez-vous que cela est réalisable le 22/05 (faisant ainsi étape entre Hiroshima et Tokyo)? Bien évidement, je suis preneur de tous conseils et avis. Pour ceux qui connaissent, il semble que ce soit plus éloigné du centre de Yokohama, que je voudrais visiter.. Comment rejoindre les sites à visiter ? Bonjour. Je suis en train de faire une réservation pour ma première visite au japon en juillet 2019. J'y vais avec ma fille de 16 ans et notre but c'est de découvrir plusieurs villes et régions. Qu'est-ce que vous pensez de l'idée de commencer à Sapporo (il y a de vol direct de Helsinki) et de retourner par Fukuoka (vol direct aussi). Pour nous déplacer on pense avoir des carte JR. Qu'est-ce que vous pensez? Est-ce que je devrai penser d'une autre manière pour un voyage d'une douzaine de jours?

A few friends and I are planning our trip to Japan for next autumn. This will be my first time traveling, which is why we’ve decided to go for a big trip of at least 2 months, maybe even 3.

So far, we’ve estimated the budget to be between 7,000 and 10,000 € per person for the stay. I’m not sure if that’s too high or too low, considering we’ll be moving around a lot.

Here’s a summary of the route we’d like to take:

First, we definitely want to visit the classics like Tokyo, Kyoto, etc. Then head toward Mount Fuji with Fujiyoshida and the surrounding area. We’d also like to visit some less touristy, more authentic spots like the Wakayama region. We’d like to check out some mountain or countryside villages like Shirakawa-go for a few hikes. We’re still debating whether to visit Miyajima and Hiroshima since we’re not sure we’ll have enough time. And we sadly had to cut Hokkaido from our list for the same reason.

I won’t go into every detail since we’ve mapped out over twenty places, but those are the main highlights.

As for our travel style:

We want to take our time. Not try to cram in as much as possible without any breaks or enjoyment. Most of the time, we’ll be staying in Airbnbs and youth hostels. For food, we’ll mix it up between restaurants, pre-made meals, and cooking our own. For transportation, we’re considering renting a car to reach villages in the countryside. (I’m a bit nervous about the road rules over there.) For activities, one or two a day seems reasonable. (Both free and paid ones.) But I have no idea how much souvenirs might cost. I’ve often read on forums that it’s between 200 and 600 €?

My questions:

So, that’s the plan. We’re not sure yet if we’ll go for two or three months. It’ll mostly come down to money. We want to be mindful of our budget but still treat ourselves—no regrets about missing out on an activity or restaurant we really wanted to try.

After years of silence and wonderful memories from our exchanges during two trips to South Africa, I’m back on the forum with plans for a trip to Japan.

We’re considering traveling from June 16 to July 9. I know this isn’t the best time weather-wise, but it’s our only option, especially since we want to include climbing Mount Fuji.

alors voilà cette été je vais partir en Corée du sud avec une amie et j'aimerai avoir quelques conseilles ..

Tout d'abord on aimerait bien visiter 2 villes : Séoul et Busan et j'aimerai savoir combien de temps vous conseillez pour visiter Séoul ? Nous aimerions partir environ 3 semaines et je m'étais dit 2 semaines à Séoul et une semaine à Busan, mais est ce que ce ne sera pas trop long 2 semaines à Séoul ? (et donc dans ce cas peut être faire un voyage de plutôt 2 semaines ou alors visiter une autre ville ?)

De plus je me demandais quel compagnies d'avion vous conseillez pour partir en Corée du Sud ?

Sachant que ce sera mon premier voyage un Corée du Sud et que c'est vraiment un projet que j'ai depuis trés longtemps et qui me tient à coeur, je m'y prend plutôt tôt pour le préparer et me renseigner pour que ce soit un séjour inoubliable !

I’m planning my very first trip soon, which will be to South Korea, and I’d love some advice and tips from people who’ve already been there.

I’ll be traveling in October with a friend, and we’re staying for a little over a month. We’ve planned to visit Seoul, Busan, and Jeju Island, and we’d also like to check out some traditional villages—but I’m not sure which ones yet? (I’ve seen names like Gyeongju, Jeonju, and Andong?) So, I’d really appreciate any recommendations on that, as well as how much time you’d suggest spending in each city to make the most of it 🙂 If you have other destinations to recommend, I’m all ears 😉

As for accommodations, is it better to book everything in advance, or is it possible to find something on the day for that same night? I’m a bit anxious about this since we haven’t finalized the dates for each city yet...

If you have any other tips on things I haven’t mentioned, don’t hesitate! I’m open to everything! 😏
