Hi, This summer, we’re spending a month in Malaysia. There are 3 adults and two kids in our group. I’ve just finished planning our itinerary and I’d love to get your thoughts on whether it feels "coherent." Thanks in advance for your feedback! Hi there,

I think this involves a lot of travel with some very short stops (Mulu, Ipoh, Cameron Highlands) or very far-flung ones (Sandakan). You’ll be rushing around a lot and only really relaxing at the Perhentians.

Here are my tips: - I’d spend the first night in KL and head to Kuching the next day. - Save all the KL sightseeing and nearby visits for the end rather than the start—it’s always handy in case of flight cancellations or other issues. - Bako: if you’re staying overnight, book a little in advance; the bungalows aren’t very numerous. - Semenggoh: it’ll only take up the morning. It’s great. You can get there by taxi early and come back with the free bus. Apparently, it’s the right season to see orangutans since there aren’t too many fruits in the forest. - Double-check in advance: there are several Kuching-Miri flights per day, but Miri-Mulu flights aren’t daily at certain times. Stay at least 2 days in Mulu. - I’m not convinced it’s worth going all the way to Sandakan (3 flights from Mulu!!) for the Kinabatangan if you’ve already been to Mulu. - Penang: I think July is the wrong season on the west coast. A lot of rain (check this). - Malacca: 2 days is good. There are dozens of daily buses from KL to Malacca in 2.5 hours.

In conclusion, I’d cut a few stops and focus on the peninsula + Kuching.

After checking, the west coast is good to go in July.

So here’s another suggestion (among others 🙂):

- Borneo: Kuching 4 days, Sandakan (Kinabatangan) 3 days + Kota Kinabalu 2 days (islands of Abdul Raman Park, floating mosque) - Peninsular Malaysia: KL, Malacca, Perhentians, Penang

Taman Negara will overlap with the jungle around the Kinabatangan River and Bako. By taking a night bus from Malacca to Kuala Besut for the Perhentians, you’ll save 3 days to use elsewhere by taking it a bit easier (Sandakan, KK).

Brunei is also nice (between KK and Miri) but transport can be quite tricky.

Don’t forget to factor in all the time lost in airports with all the flights in your original plan. Kuching → Mulu is 2 flights (layover in Miri). Mulu to Sandakan is 3 flights via Miri and KK.

Good evening, Thank you for your reply, which helped us clarify a few things. Regarding KL, we were thinking of visiting the city upon arrival to ease into the time difference. For Mulu, we really want to go because it seems so unique. We found flights directly from Kuching without a stop in Miri, operated by "Air Borneo", lasting 1h40. For Kinabatangan, we’d love to go hoping to see the pygmy elephant and wild orangutans (outside a reserve). They offer some great packages. Flights go to Kota Kinabalu then to Sandakan, where we’d be picked up. I’d read on various forums that Kota Kinabalu wasn’t worth it... For Peninsular Malaysia, we’ll skip Taman Negara then. We’d rather rent a car than take the bus since we’re traveling with two kids. The trip to the Perhentians will be long, indeed.

I didn’t know there were Kuching-Mulu flights, so yeah, it’s definitely doable without losing too much time.

For the elephants along the Kinabatangan, you need a bit of luck to spot them since they live in the forest and only come out for a dip now and then.

Same goes for the proboscis monkeys—they’re not easy to see, but you should have better luck spotting them in Bako.

Kota Kinabalu isn’t much to write home about except for the beautiful "floating" mosque, but it’s a decent stop if you have time to rest for a day or two before heading to the islands in Abdul Raman Park just across the way. Not a must-do, though.

Absolutely, you should spend 2 or 3 days there. When it comes to wildlife, you need a bit of luck, as my predecessor perfectly put it. It’s not guaranteed.

Hi there, I think that’s a lot to do in just 1 month. Otherwise, regarding things to visit in Kuala Lumpur, I’m sharing my blog post on the topic below—it might be helpful for you. Happy travels! https://www.voyagetranquille.com/visiter-kuala-lumpur/

Hi there,

I’ve done a lot of traveling myself. Don’t forget that every trip takes at least half a day and costs quite a bit of money too. And it doesn’t leave much time to actually enjoy the places or rest.

This is just my opinion, of course! :)
