Hi there,

We’re spending a week in Samui and then two in Phangan in February.

We’re looking to stay in places that aren’t too touristy, close to beautiful beaches and authentic villages... I know Koh Samui is very touristy, but are there any spots that are a bit more off the beaten path? Same for Phangan—what part of the island is the prettiest, most exotic, and authentic?

Thanks in advance...

Hello CathyetEric, We went to Koh Phangan last year at the same time and stayed at Sea Scene Resort, about ten bungalows on a very pretty beach with trees and round rocks just 10 meters away—simple and comfortable. This part of the coast up to Chaloklum Beach is the most beautiful, but there are spots where the beach disappears at high tide during this season. There’s a decent Thai restaurant, and at the top of the hotel access road, a small canteen with great food. The street market in Thong Sala on Saturdays from 4 PM to 10 PM is really nice. A French guy on the island, Joël, provides excellent information and can book the hotel for you. We weren’t able to meet him in person, but he was very helpful via email and phone: contact@phanganguide.com, 089-475-14-92
