Hi everyone!! My partner and I just got our very first motorhome!! It's second-hand and not exactly new (1987), but it runs well: it's a Trafic T1300 van with a Pilote R320 coachbuilt body (CE model: the one with 4 berths, a double bed up front on the dinette and 2 single bunk beds at the back). We're total beginners in this area (my partner knows a bit about car mechanics but not motorhomes) and we don't have a user manual. So, we're a bit lost—we don’t know what all the buttons on the control panel do. Can you help us???? We know what the bottom left one and the battery test do (except the one with the lightning bolt), but not the others.

What’s the red wire near the batteries for (it’s not connected)?? What exactly does the coupling/separator do (I’m a woman, lol)?? How do we operate the fridge—I think it’s original but not sure (Electrolux brand)?? What should we do when the motorhome is parked for the winter—any safety tips and tricks to prevent freezing, etc.?? Do we need to empty the water tanks, for example? I’m really new to this!! Other questions are pending, but we’ll see about those later. Thanks so much in advance for your help!!

PS: Where can we find cheap sites to buy accessories?? For example: screw cover seals, sealant, window frames, trimix fridge, chemical toilets... (aside from Leboncoin, of course!!)???

The buttons. I don’t know this panel, but generally, there’s a control for the habitation battery (for lighting) and the engine battery. There’s also a button to turn on the water pump. For monitoring, there’s sometimes the water tank levels: your fresh water tank and the waste water tank(s) (usually one for the shower and one for the kitchen). There might be a light indicating if you’re connected to 220 volts.

The battery coupler: you clearly have a button for it. Normally, your engine battery is isolated, and you only drain the habitation battery for lighting, etc. When you drive, your engine battery recharges the habitation battery. Another way to recharge the habitation battery is by plugging into 220V (using an external power socket on the campervan) or with a solar panel. At that point—and if your campervan isn’t driven much (in winter)—it can be useful to couple the battery the other way: the engine battery is recharged by the habitation battery. All of this is automatic in newer campervans, but you clearly have switches for this.

For the fridge, it’s probably a trimix model with a big green switch, a small red one, and an orange piezo + 3 rotary knobs. - Plug the campervan into 220V; it’ll probably work if the big green switch is on. Check if it’s getting cold. - When you start the engine, the red button lights up: the fridge gets a little cold from the engine’s electricity, but it’s not very powerful. - For gas: you need to be connected to gas and turn the far-right knob while pressing it. At the same time, turn on the orange switch that goes *tick tick* (piezo). If all goes well, the piezo stops quickly because the gas is lit. Wait 5 seconds, then release the pressure on the right knob, and the fridge is now running on gas. You can then turn off the orange piezo switch.

In winter—if it freezes hard—you should generally drain everything and leave the taps open. Otherwise, you’ll at least break some taps.

For accessories, look for a local shop instead. There are plenty around (like Narbonnes Accessoire). They also have an online site, but nothing beats visiting in person for easy exchanges if there’s a problem and getting advice from the seller. For electronic stuff, try eBay with direct purchases from Asia.

A huge, huge thank you Valmy31 for taking the time to answer all my questions!!! It's such a big help!!!

In the meantime, I'd sent an email to the "Pilote" website. Their customer service got back to me today and sent me the control panel manual—awesome!!! So now, with all this info (yours and Pilote's), I can dig into it, check the fridge and fuses, and make sure the tanks are empty.

Thanks again!!!

PS: I’ll scan the docs and post them on the forum so others in the same situation can benefit.

Hi there, I recently bought a Pilote Renault Trafic T1300d R320 camper van too, and the fridge wasn’t working. Here’s the solution that might help (it’s a known issue, by the way).

Electrolux RM 216 84 fridge in a Pilote R320: the pilot light flame goes out when you release the red button (start-up) (Can’t get the camper van fridge to run on gas. The pilot light goes out as soon as you let go of the start button.)

You need to remove the fridge by taking out the 4 screws on the sides and replace what’s called the thermocouple (or thermoelectric couple). This universal part is used in lots of household appliances. It costs around 30 to 40 € from camper van suppliers and about 10 € from a good heating specialist or appliance spare parts store. So, it’s definitely worth replacing given the price. It’s a sensor in the form of a thin copper tube (2-3 mm in diameter) about 1 m to 1.20 m long, located at the back of the fridge. One end sits near the small pilot light flame at the back of the fridge, and the other is connected to the gas valve. Make sure to push the thermocouple head fully into the valve to ensure electrical contact. Tighten the retaining bolt on the thermocouple head moderately.

Hi,

Soon the CC user manual

Oh yeah, I’m really looking forward to it. I contacted Pilote about my 1988 R320 that I just inherited, but no answer yet... So if I could get it, that’d be great.

Thanks

Hi everyone, I’ve just turned 30 and treated myself to this lovely camper van—which also happens to be 30 years old! I read through the discussion and think it’s awesome that we can help each other out 😉 If possible, could someone please send me the manual to my email too: caro13009@hotmail.com Thanks so much! I also wanted to ask: How do you top up the coolant? The reservoir is way up on top of the engine, completely blocked by the dashboard—ugh! Looking forward to your help! Thanks again

Hi tana,

Would you still have that manual, by any chance? Please? I just got one too, and it’d help me understand it better🙂

Hi everyone,

There’s a forum for Pilote motorhome owners. By signing up (it’s free), you could definitely get more info about your vehicles and accessories.
