Car rental (4x4) from Tbilisi in Georgia

Hi,

For our trip to Georgia in July, I’d like to rent a 4x4 starting from Tbilisi. Do you have any rental companies to recommend? The traditional rentals like Hertz, Avis, etc. seem way overpriced compared to local companies—what do you think? Are they properly insured?

Has anyone here tried Geo Rent Car, Auto 4 Rental, or Sur Price?

Also, I’m looking for info on the condition of the Ushguli–Lentekhi track—is it passable?

Thanks for your tips! Penlan

Hi Dominique,

I’m heading to Georgia in July and I’ve booked a 4x4 with Cars4Rent, including camping gear. They offer rentals with full insurance—zero excess (everything’s covered except tires and passengers).

Their website is well done. You’ve got a wide choice of vehicles, and you can also clearly pick from a category of older models that are a bit cheaper.

Payment is in cash on delivery.

They’re very responsive by email and Messenger. And the feedback I’ve found is positive.

On another note, I’m looking for info on the condition of the Ushguli–Lentekhi track—is it passable?

In theory, it is in summer. Of course, you should always check locally before committing. And have a Plan B just in case. I’m planning to take it in July from Ushguli toward Lentekhi.

Hi, I’m traveling to Georgia this summer with my son, and we’ll be renting a 4x4. Does anyone know if the track between Pshaveli and Omalo in Tusheti is accessible with a rental 4x4? It seems some agencies ban access to this track (known as the "road of death"). Thanks for your reply.

Hello,

A colleague of mine went there last summer. He took this route without any issues. He rented a 4x4. I’m not aware of any restrictions on this road for an appropriate rental vehicle. As a precaution, you can just ask the rental agency to confirm 🙂.

Thanks for your reply. We’ll check with the agency, then.

Hi there, I’m reaching out to see if any of you managed to find a rental company that would agree to rent you a 4x4 for trips to Omalo and Vashlovani. I can’t find any—everyone’s refusing. If so, which company and what was the rate?

Thanks so much!

Best regards,

Hi,

No, apparently it’s tough to get there on your own right now, since we were told the road isn’t paved. In the end, due to time constraints, we’re skipping Tusheti and heading to Kazbegi via the Military Highway, then on to Svaneti. There’s a useful website (and a Facebook page) where you can find lots of info: ountravela georgia. Good luck!

Hello,

Have you contacted this rental agency: https://cars4rent.ge/en/? A colleague rented a 4x4 from them last summer and went to Omalo, with the agency’s approval.

It’s essential to rent a true 4x4 for this route (on the Car4Rent site, they label them as "Vehicule for Difficult Off-road").

In Car4Rent’s general terms, it’s very clearly specified:

Territorial Restrictions and Vehicle Types

All vehicles are separated into 3 categories:

For City / Highway, are not allowed on any off-road For Easy Off-Road, are allowed on any road except Tusheti, Ushguli, and Lentekhi regions and the Akhaltsikhe–Khulo road. For Difficult Off-road, are allowed on any official road in Georgia

None of our vehicles are allowed to cross occupied territories (Abkhazia & Ossetia)

So you can go to Omalo if you choose the right vehicle! 🙂

Have a great day, Pascale

When we traveled to Georgia, we rented a 4x4 from https://gurosun.ge. They have a great selection of cars, and everything went really smoothly.
