Petite famille composée de Madame Potts, Monsieur et d'une pré-ado de 11 ans, nous souhaiterions nous rendre aux US en avril prochain, du 13/04 au 27/04 pour être précise.
Après avoir déjà fait une boucle LA-LA et la découverte des parcs de l'ouest, nous avons chopé le virus et nous voilà prêts à y retourner en 2015, si tout va bien. Tout d'abord, avril pour un trip de SF à LA est-ce une bonne idée? Ne fait-il pas trop froid?
J'ai déjà commencé à glaner des infos ici et là pour l'itinéraire, l'hébergement et les billets d'avion:
1/ VOLS:
Aller le 13/04 de LUX à SFO via LHR (escale de 2h10) avec American Airlines
Retour le 27/04 de LAX vers LUX via LHR (escale de 2h10) avec American Airlines.
--> tarif pour nous 3: 1.780€ 😮 j'ai été agréablement surprise des tarifs, car moins cher que pour un aller-retour LUX-LAX-LUX, alors qu'il s'agit d'un openjaw. Mais tant mieux! Nous allons donc devoir nous décider ASAP!!!!
1ere question: american airlines, je lis du bon, mais beaucoup de mauvais..... est-ce vraiment une compagnie agréable? Sérieuse....? Sinon pour 200€ de plus j'ai l'option British Airways avec le même trip.
2/ ITINÉRAIRE
13/04: arrivée à SF à 17h10, le temps de passer l'immigration, la douane et de choper les valises, j'estime être sortis de l'aéroport pour 19h, soyons confiants! Direction l'hôtel via le BART. Nuit au Baldwin ou Best Western Americania --> bonne ou mauvaise idée? Certains quartiers sont peu fréquentables, comme dans chaque grande ville d'ailleurs, ai-je fait le bon choix?
14/04: Visite de SF : PIer, lombard street, Chinatown, Union Square

25/04 au 27/04 Santa Monica en point de chute et visite des endroits de LA que nous n'avons pas vu: Studios?
27/04: vol retour à 18h35, ce qui nous laisse encore la dernière journée de libre
3/ VOITURE
Je pense passer par Alamo, mais je ne sais pas si pour prendre la voiture après la visite de SF, je dois retourner à SFo ou la prendre dans une agence du centre comme Union ou convention. j'ai eu peu peur que le choix soit moindre, car nous voudrions, sans certitude de la recevoir nous savons, une dodge challenger .... qu'en pensez-vous? J'ai lu des avis négatifs sur les agences en ville, ils sont pê mieux organisés à l'aéroport non?
Voilà ma première ébauche, rien n'est figé les billets ne sont pas (encore) achetés. Mais dès validation de nos congés d'ici quelques jours, nous sautons dessus car nous trouvons le tarif raisonnable. Ou bien cela risque-t-il encore de baisser?
Je vous laisse le clavier en espérant avoir bien bossé déjà.
Pour la location du véhicule, effectivement il vaut mieux l'aéroport que les agences du centre ville.
Pour la météo, c'est une excellente période pour faire la Côte Pacifique.
Pour les studios à LA: au choix Paramount ou Warner Bros. Sachant qu'il vaut mieux un petit peu parler anglais pour comprendre les explications du guide.
Pour les billets d'avion, ça ne baissera pas plus que ce que tu as pu voir, sinon ça serait donné 😛

La meilleure saison pour ce parcours est septembre ou octobre. En hiver il pleut pleuvoir, en ete c'est le brouillard. Avril est entre les deux saisons "pluies"/"brouillard". C'est en general une bonne periode. Mais bien sur, il est tres difficile de prevoir la pluie et le brouillard. J'habite dans la region. Il m'est arrive d'avoir un enorme brouillard a Monterey en Octobre, et cet ete, le brouillard est plutot absent (tant mieux).

La, je modifierais un peu l'itineraire. Le jour 18/04 est trop rempli si vous voulez voir l'aquarium. Les horaires de l'aquarium sont contraignants, mais il est tres bien. Ces 3 jours sont a revoir.
On a vraiment adoré cette ville . et le rythme de notre denier road trip ayant été très très speed on voudrait s'accorder du repos avec une maison ou appartement avec piscine. Car se baigner dans l'océan... Glaglagla...
La Californie n'est pas une destination de vacances balneaires, a part peut-etre a San Diego au mois d'aout (quoique moi, j'avais trouve l'eau tres froide en aout).
Mon conseil: utiliser ces 5 jours pour visiter en profondeur la region: apres San Francisco, vous pouvez faire une excursion au nord dans la region des vins (Sonoma, ou Napa Valley si les dommages creent par le tremblement de terre ont ete repares) ou Point Reyes, 1 jour de plus a Monterey (comme ca vous avez une journee entiere pour visiter Monterey, Carmel), 1 nuit a San Luis Obispo. A LA, vous pouvez ajouter 1 nuit a cote de Joshua Tree National Park.
On pensait pas se baigner à l'océan mais pour qu'on pas le prendre cool au bord d'une piscine.
Mais je vais enlever 2 jours. Je vais bosser ça demain.
En attendant dodo, en rêvant de ce futur trip.

Le best western americania est pas mal. Chambres spacieuses, piscine. Le truc, c est que c est chambre only, l hotel n a pas de restaurant.
Pour manger, il y a le custom burger (qui est accessible depuis l hotel) juste à côté.
Quand j y sejournais, je me calais d un bon oeufs/pain/saucisses ... J etais ainsi quasi bon pour la journée :-)
En terme de localisation, y a mieux mais bon... Disons qu il n est pas du côté touristique de Sf.

Le quartier, ca va oui. Après ça reste san francisco.
Tu verras des pauvres, des sdf... Mais ça reste safe. Tant que tu ne remontes pas plus haut que mission et que ne rentres pas dans le tenderloin district, c est bon.

Me revoici avec une question.... est-il mieux ce loger en hôtel ou en aribnb?
Je viens de trouver des super appart a Russian Hills, je me disais que le quartier était bien, mais pê un peu éloigné du centre, car nous n'aurons pas de voiture les premiers jours.
Des conseils? En parallèle j'écume les sujets via la fonction recherche , -)
1- auberge de jeunesse (hostelling international)
2 - hôtel (Best Western Americania)
3 - Airbnb les deux dernières années.
En terme de coûts, pas certain que l'airbnb soit plus avantageux que l'hôtel en tant que tel. On peut par contre y gagner sur le budget nourriture en se préparant un bon petit déj directement à l'appart le matin.
Ce point passé, SF est vraiment la ville de airbnb donc, complètement mature à ce sujet. Si tu trouves un truc qui te branche, go for it! (bien checker les reviews/commentaires des locataires précédents)
Concernant les transports:
SF est une ville ou il est préférable de se passer de voiture de location (tant qu'on reste en ville, évidemment). A part le dénivelé (suivant qu'on se trouve côté Fisherman's ou Market street), la ville peut se visiter à pied.
Mais tu as aussi les transports en commun: Muni (bus) Bart (métro) - voir les tarifs ici (prendre le multiday pass ou une clipper card).
Bien évidemment les taxis, à la volée
Ou, si la technique ne te rebute pas et que dispose d'un forfait data, l'alternative Uber (très facile) dont SF est richement dotée , -) (Uber est une application smartphone, dans laquelle tu es geolocalisée, et par laquelle tu peux commander un véhicule/chauffeur).

Nous avons fait le même circuit que vous (mais dans l'autre sens et en terminant par un séjour de 4 jours à New York) cet été avec notre fille de 11 ans.
Elle (nous aussi !) a adoré ses vacances américaines et en particulier:

La plupart des gens visitant l'ouest de USA privilégient les parcs. Nous avons quand à nous privilégié les villes car nous habitons une région où toutes les activités sont axées sur la nature et la rando (La Corse !) et avions envie d'autre chose pour nos vacances.

Je dois encore faire des ajustements, mais j'ai les grandes lignes (enfin j'espère) J'ai déjà choisi les hôtels, mais pas encore réservé. L'an passé en décembre, j'avais eu -10% sur tout hotels.com en promo vacances, tout je vais attendre un peu. Seul le baldwin est réservé.
Mais mon J16, je viens de tilter que ca ne va pas! le 17 je passe par le pont pour aller à Muir Woods, ne vaut-il pas mieux tout faire en une journée:SAusalito+Muir Woods puir vers Monterey?

Je ne sais pas le prix actuel du GGB, mais c'est surtout le trafic qui me freinerait… peut-être. Quoique maintenant, il y a le pay-by-plate* qui doit fluidifier un peu.

Mais mon J16, je viens de tilter que ca ne va pas! le 17 je passe par le pont pour aller à Muir Woods, ne vaut-il pas mieux tout faire en une journée:SAusalito+Muir Woods puir vers Monterey?
Non. Prendre la voiture te prendra du templs. Puis aller a Muir Woods prends du temps. Puis Muir Woods-Monterey prends beaucoup de temps. Lorsque tu fais Muir-Woods-Gilroy-Monterey, fait tres attention de ne pas y aller aux heures de pointes (3:30-6:30pm), car la circulation sera tres tres tres dense. Ca te rajouter au moins 1h (peut-etre meme 2h) de route. La region de la Bay Area avec ses autoroutes, c'est comme une tres grande ville.
Je prends note de ça. Je vais aussi voir les hop on hop off.
Et pour la prise en charge de la voiture, je vais tenter d'y aller tôt le matin. Je vais voir pour m'y faire emmener via shuttle. Je vais peut-être réserver un shuttle à l'arrivée plutôt que le Bart, car peur de faire tout le trajet de nuit... Selon l'arrivée à sfo.

Si j'ai bien compris, tu veux aller de SF a l'aeroport le matin (a moins d'y aller avant 6:30am, tu seras dans les heures de pointes), puis tu veux aller a Muir Woods en traversant San Francisco pendant les heures de pointes, puis tu veux visiter Muir Woods (en etant super optimiste, je dis que tu y arrives vers 12h, puis vers 15h, tu veux aller a Gilroy soit en passant par SF (folie) soit en passant par la "East Bay" (Richmond Bridge, route 880, route 101), tout cela pendant les heures de pointes, et ensuite tu veux finir a Monterey. Ca va etre une journee "je suis dans ma voiture dans les bouchons". Serieusement, laisse tomber Muir Woods.
Mon conseil general pour ton planning: allege, allege, allege, allege. Oui, tu peux faire tout cela, mais en super rapide. Tu passeras trop de temps en voiture.

Pour vos petits dej à SF, il y a à 2 blocs sur le meme coté, en allant sur Golden gate, le MEL'S DRIVE-IN : ambiance fifties, sixties garantie.
Autrrement je vois que vs faites apres des motels de chaine : Prenez leur carte de fidelité, ca permet d'avoir des remises interesantes, et, n si vs restez dans la même chaine, de profiter de nuits gratuites.
L'an dernier chez Choiceprivileges (quality inn, comfort inn) ca m'a permis d'avoir 3 nuits gratuites à la fin de mon sejour, soit l'equivalent de 20% de remise supp.
Je suis entrain de me demande si je ne vais pas changer l'hôtel de camarillo le 19/04 pour dormir plutôt à santa Barbara.
Bonne idée ou pas ?

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

There are several attractions along the way:

- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.

Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?

Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
