Tips for preparing a trip to Algeria in early 2026 and administrative formalities

Hi! I’m planning a 15-day trip to Algeria and have a few questions. First, about the visa—none of the consulates near me are answering the phone... So, for hotel reservations, is booking just the first night enough? Can one person handle the paperwork for both of us as a couple?

Next, we’re hoping to do a road trip using public transport—any realistic itinerary ideas for two weeks?

And finally, how did you handle money? I’ve heard you have to declare cash on arrival—how did you manage the exchange? Thanks in advance for your tips, because so far it’s been tough getting answers, and I don’t want to struggle!

Hi there, for the consulate, you book an appointment on the website consulat-grenoble-algerie.fr. You need to plan ahead depending on the period. All the details are on the site. I’m currently in Ghardaïa. For 2 weeks, you can do the coast from Oran to Bejaia. No problem with buses or shared taxis. Just so you know, domestic flights aren’t expensive. For example, Oran to Constantine is 8,861 dinars (33 €) with a stop in Algiers. If you want to go south, DO NOT MENTION IT TO THE CONSULATE. Book a refundable 3-day stay in the north on Booking.com, then cancel it. I’ll make a post about it on the forum. For money, you must declare anything over 1,000 € per person, and you can exchange almost anywhere—today’s rate is 280 dinars to 1 €.

Thanks so much for your reply! Yes, in the end, I’ll be traveling from the coast of Oran to Constantine. I’ll look into flights—it could really save time! One last question: what’s the app for VTCs in Algeria? We’ll be there partly during Ramadan—will that cause any complications? Thanks again! Cécile

During Ramadan, it’s tricky—few buses, restaurants closed... The VTC app that works well is Yassir, but not for long distances. Otherwise, check flights on Air Algérie and domestic airlines. You can also arrive in Oran and leave from Algiers. I think Constantine has flights to Lyon.
