Crossing the Bering Strait

Hi everyone,

I’m in the middle of planning a round-the-world 4x4 trip spread over 2 years, covering around 70 countries. Unfortunately, using a vehicle poses some challenges when it comes to moving between continents (e.g., the Bering Strait). After lots of research, consulting books, maps, and making countless phone calls, I still can’t figure out how to get from Russia to Alaska via the Bering Strait (access via the Road of Bones to Magadan and then continuing above Anadyr).

So, I’m open to any recommendations, tips, or contacts to find out if it’s possible by boat or any other means.

Thanks for your replies!!

There’s no road at the western end of Alaska.

Yeah, that's what I saw, but is there any way to connect Dutch Harbor to Anchorage by boat (one that can carry a car, of course)? I saw on Google Maps that the closest town to the far west of Alaska served by a road was Homer (Route 1).

Since I’ll have a 4x4, isn’t there any rough road connecting all the small towns?

The Bering Strait can't be crossed. It's inaccessible on the Russian side, and it's a heavily protected military surveillance zone.

Boat crossings happen further south, but not at Bering.

If, by some miracle—after endless dealings with Moscow or a phone call to your friend Vladimir—you could take the nonexistent ferry or even charter a boat between Russia and Alaska, and if you had enough funds (plus the backing of Lloyd’s of London) to reach Dutch Harbor, then yes, from there, the twice-monthly ferry (May to September) of the Alaska Marine Highway System could take you to Homer, which is connected by road to Anchorage.

My suggestion? Once you’re at the easternmost port in Asia (Russia? Korea? China? Japan?), it’s better to head to Vancouver. 😉

Happy planning!

Do you know where the crossing is done exactly? Near Magadan or Anadyr?
RO Roadtrip42 ·
Unfortunately, I don’t have the necessary resources or connections—I think our friend Vladimir would politely suggest I look elsewhere if I tried. 😄😄

Well, I won’t give you Vladimir’s personal number... But more seriously, there’s a ferry between Vladivostok and Japan. Lots of Russians go there to buy a car. From Japan, there are ferries to Vancouver. That city is flooded with used vehicles from Japan. I bought one a few years ago.

Your fellow travelers http://voyageforum.com/membres/hugo1701/ and http://voyageforum.com/membres/hugojulia/ (unless it’s the same person) posted their five-year round-the-world travel journal online, including a section linking Siberia to Alaska ("...for Canada, I only went to the easiest-to-access northern islands after crossing by boat through the Bering Strait and driving across Alaska...")

Since Etretal won’t share their personal contacts in Russia 😉, maybe you’ll have better luck with the Hugos 😎. Anyway, good luck preparing for your fantastic adventure!

A huge thank you to you both—it's pretty much impossible to get info on this kind of thing through traditional channels!

I'm driving a 4x4 to Alaska to see how I can cross into Russia via the strait. Leaving from Texas with 1 or 2 cars at the end of July—we'll see if I'm ready. If you're interested, let me know. I do speak French, so no problem. My email: .jory57@gmail.com

This is a French-language forum😉

Luc, my French isn’t very good. Sorry! Geo

You can’t cross it—Bering isn’t the passage between Alaska and Russia. It’s actually forbidden to even attempt going through the Bering Strait.

Hi there! Hope you're doing well? Following some of your older posts, I was wondering if you ever managed to cross the Bering Strait?
