hello we're heading to Marrakech with a 5-year-old and would love to give them a memorable experience. Any suggestions for something simple and definitely not too "luxury"? Thanks so much

Hi,

What do you mean by desert? The real desert where you could go bivouacking is a 10-hour drive from Marrakech. The "marketing desert" that’s presented as such but isn’t one near Marrakech is Agafay, and it’s just rocky terrain. There are only camps with pools and all the bells and whistles.

It all depends on how much time you have. But it’s definitely a beautiful experience to share, for sure. However, it needs to be in a real desert—the sandy desert. Here’s a family experience we had; you might find some ideas in it. It can even be done over a short period: https://voyageforum.com/forum/en-famille-marrakech-desert-d9643843/ Also, keep in mind that Morocco has a lot to offer even if you don’t go to the desert.

Thanks so much for your reply. I’ll draw inspiration from your experience—we’re not going for very long, just a week max, I think. And yes, you need sand, lots of sand! :-) We’re going with some Australians who’ve never been to Morocco. Have a great day!

hi, yeah, the "real desert" would be better. A 10-hour drive is definitely something to think about, and I think it's better to skip this experience rather than end up with a tourist trap ;-) Thanks...

It's still doable in a week. It all depends on what you'd like to prioritize.

That's a good question 😉 I really do need to talk to the Australians about it....

Hi Virginie,

A week is doable if you dedicate 4 days to it and plan the route well for the little one: Marrakech – Dadès Valley with a stop in Aït Ben Haddou, then Dadès – Merzouga to arrive in the afternoon, one night at the camp, and the return trip in 2 days with an overnight stay near Ouarzazate. At the camp, a one-hour camel ride at sunset is more than enough for a 5-year-old, and kids love sliding down the dunes.

If 4 days of driving seems like too much, there’s a gentler option: 2 nights in Essaouira, with dunes and the beach just south of the city. It’s not the Sahara, but there’s sand, camels, and it’s only 3 hours from Marrakech.

Have a great trip! Margherita
