Après 24 mois d'attente et de longues heures de préparation nous avons entamé le 1er juin notre troisième voyage aux USA.
De retour depuis une bonne semaine je trouve enfin le temps et le courage de donner ici quelques impressions et sentiments concernant ces 5 semaines passées en partie dans le Grand Ouest.
Il me faudra beaucoup plus de temps pour livrer un carnet de voyage et des photos. 😎😎
La météo ? Particulière 🤪!! En gros, nous avons passé presque 5 semaines coincés entre les feux et la canicule au Sud et les pluies et inondations au Nord.
Globalement nous sommes revenus enchantés et heureux de notre escapade outre Atlantique.
Bien sûr quelques déconvenues, déceptions ou erreurs ont émaillées notre séjour.
Mais sur une telle durée il faudrait, à mon avis, être prétentieux pour penser être à l'abri de connaître quelques difficultés.
Le vol en lui-même a été marqué par une attente de 2 heures dans le 747 de la Lufthansa à Frankfort. Donc 2 heures de retard à l'atterrissage à Denver !
Pas cool cette attente sur le siège du Boeing.
La raison invoquée ? Beaucoup de vent et des pistes fermées.
Le voyage en lui-même était préparé avec 2 volets bien distincts:
- 3 semaines dans l'Ouest entre l'Utah, le Wyoming et le South Dakota;
- 2 semaines de Chicago à New York en passant par Niagara Falls et Boston.
Deux voyageurs au départ et trois à partir de Chicago.
Non, nous n'avons pas connu de naissance pendant ce séjour 😇 !
Plus simplement notre fils de 22 ans nous a rejoints à ce moment là.
1ère partie:
En quelques mots, Moab, où nous avons passé 5 journées entières pour notre deuxième passage n'a pas fini de nous enchanter. Nous aurions bien aimé prolonger cette étape.
En plus des somptueux paysages et des magnifiques ballades nous y avons rencontré Laurence et son Spartiate avec qui nous avons partagé deux agréables soirées.
Après Moab nous sommes remonté vers Vernal et Dinosaur N.P. avec une courte visite de Rifle Falls S.P.
Puis ce sera Flaming Gorge et Jackson Hole où nous pourrons vérifier que l'hiver n'est pas terminé en ce début juin !! Très agréable le coin du Grand Téton, Gros Ventre et des Red Hills que nous avons découvert à l'occasion d'une éclaircie de 24h00. Le lendemain les montagnes ne sont plus visibles depuis l'US 89 qui nous conduit à Yellowstone.
Nous grimpons sans illusion vers le parc que nous découvrons sous un ciel gris et encore sous la neige. Lewis Lake est recouvert d'une couche de glace tout comme Yellowstone Lake.
Bon, nous étions prévenus !
Direction Cody et puis par la suite le Big Horn Canyon. Belle surprise et agréable promenade avec quelques Mustangs en prime.
Le Sud Dakota ensuite, très plaisant, au moins dans sa partie Ouest et jusqu'à Wall.
Dans le désordre: Devils Tower, Deadwood, Keystone, Mount Rushmore, Wounded Knee, Badlands par la route 44 et une courte halte sympa à Scenic.
2ème partie:
Remontée vers Chicago par l'IS90, pas de réel intérêt hormis un stop à Sioux Falls et un autre à La Crosse.
Chicago ? Très bien, étape sympa et agréable. Des Gratte-ciels mais une Ville à taille humaine. 3 jours de visite biens remplis et du Blues tous les soirs au Blue Chicago On Clark !
Passage par l'Ontario pour rejoindre Niagara Falls, Les chutes vues du coté canadiens sont réellement impressionnantes. Content d'y être passé, mais que la route est longue pour y arriver et en ressortir !!!
Boston ensuite, la Ville est très agréable et son aquarium mérite le détour. Mais déjà l'Ouest me manque !!!
New York/Manhattan pour finir, 6 nuits en appart. dans la 112ème. Comment décrire cette mégalopole ?
J'espère y arriver dans mon carnet à venir. J'y reviendrai mais sûrement pour un séjour plus court.
Fatigant après 4 semaines de voyage.
Mes coups de cœur: les Musées, Brooklyn, Greenwich Village. Sans intérêt selon moi: Little Italie et Chinatown.
Nos belles découvertes coté resto:
- Cassie's Steakhouse à Cody, 214 Yellowstone Avenue.
- Rodeo Grill à Rock Springs, 12 Purple Sage Rd.
- P.F. Chang's excellent resto chinois au 530 N Wabash Ave/Grant Avenue.
Pour finir et en deux mots: ces 5 semaines nous ont donné envie de préparer le prochain voyage et définitivement nous sommes pro-Ouest.
Sans oublier bien entendu de remercier toutes celles et ceux qui m'ont aidé tout au long de mes préparations, je pense plus particulièrement à Pascale, Jacqueline, Sedonax, et Itat (avec une mention particulière pour Yellowstone 😉😉😉😉)

L'avis des gens de Jackson que j'ai questionné concernant la météo en ce mois de juin: c'est toujours l'hiver là haut !! Et cette année il à duré 1 mois supplémentaire.

Cody où j'ai failli manger chez Irma's la soeur de l'excité de la gachette local. Heureusement pour moi une brave dame du coin à qui je demandais où il fallait diner m'a répondu: les gens de Cody ne vont pas chez Irma's mais chez Cassie's.
De l'extérieur la cabane en bois n'en jette pas de trop mais le bison y est excellentissime.

Chicago / New York sont difficiles à mettre en parallèle.
J'ai préféré Chicago que j'ai trouvé plus calme, moins encombrée.
Les "Bildingues" sont déjà bien assez hauts et l'on peu facilement y voir un bout de ciel sans se filer un torticoli🙂
La foule à Times Square ou sur Broadway, jour et nuit cela me fatigue. Les couloirs du métro surchauffés et les rames des trains glacées m'ont sonné.
J'y retournerais car en 6 jours je n'ai pas trouvé le temps de voir Ellis Island et je n'ai pas vu grand chose en dessous de Canal Street 😮 Trop grand, trop grand !!!!
Alors pour Chicago et le Blues en plus des boîtes il y a deux évènements qu'il faut essayer de caser dans un passage en juin
- Festival de Blues de Chicago dans le Millennium Park, entrée gratuite et toujours une belle affiche
- Crossroads Guitar Festival organisé par Clapton à Bridgeview, IL. Toujours en Juin.
Les déconvenues, déceptions ou erreurs:
- Longue route inutile jusqu'à Boston que je n'ai pas trouvé renversante.
- Pas de 4X4 pour Dinosaur Park, grosse erreur !
- J'ai raté la visite de la House on the Rock à Spring Green où j'ai pourtant passé la nuit 🤪
- Et puis bien sûr Yellowstone que nous avons abandonné.
Mais nous sommes rentrés ravis et heureux avec une seule idée en tête......

2h de retard pour votre vol, ce n'est rien 😄... le nôtre en novembre (Bxl --> Philadelphie par US Airways) avait 5h de retard (dont + de 2h aussi coincés dans l'avion en attente de réparation 🤪)...
j'ai hâte de lire ton carnet aussi bien sur la 1ère partie entre Moab et les Badlands du Dakota 😎... même si la neige vous a joué des tours à Yellowstone... et aussi sur la 2ème partie Chicago - Niagara Falls - Boston - NY (sacré trotte tout ça !).

ok , la fin du monde prévu pour le 21.12.2012 😕, j'ai cru au BIG ONE 🤪 déjà en 2010 vers mars ils parlaient de çà !!!!!

tu sais, je me suis dis mourrir pour mourrir, je préférerai que ça soit sur la 66 aux states que sur la 42 de chez moi lol
Pour Dinosaur nous avons renoncé à emprunter les pistes telles que la Yampa Bench ou l'Echo Park Rd car aprés nous y être engagé sur quelques centaines de mètres nous avons constaté que notre petite Ford n'aimait pas se faire secouer 🤪 La mort dans l'âme nous nous sommes contenté de rester sur les routes goudronnées 😕😕😕 C'est sympa tout de même 😐
Et puis même si l'on râle sur le coup, quelques semaines plus tard on minimise la déception et on se focalise sur le grand nombre de satisfactions que l'on rapporte de ce voyage 🙂🙂🙂

Tu as pu apprécier malgré tout ? Ce park est tellement extraordinaire... Même sous le ciel gris et sous la neige il doit être beau.

Waouh ! Souvenirs souvenirs à part Mount Rushmore, j'avais adoré cette partie de notre périple en 2005, j'espère que tu as aimé Badlands NP, ta photo jointe est très belle

Oui il faut les voir pour vraiment se rendre compte. Pas fait un p'tit tour à Toronto ? Dommage ville sympa et très belle, comme à Montréal "ils" ont sur faire de beaux gratte-ciel. Ce n'est pas facile...
Après, je ne connais pas tes étapes, donc je me mets dans la file de ceux et celles qui attendent ton carnet.

ah Moab et sa Brewery !!!...😛. En plus vous y avez croisé le pilier de bar local ... The Spartiate !.
Trêve de plaisanterie c'est vrai que cette ville nous avait aussi tapé dans l'oeil ... d'ailleurs depuis je porte des lunettes ne rêvant que d'y retourner, ce qui sera fait dans .... 10 jours OUAOUHHHHH !!!
Et les Badlands, vraiment beau ?, j'avais hésité mais c'est loin .
La dernière photo c'était votre véhicule ?, je comprend que vous n'avez pas pu descendre dans Echo Park.
En conclusion le voyage a visiblement été à la hauteur des espérances, super 🙂🙂🙂😛 et Yellowstone ... en fait c'est juste pour vous donner une raison d'y retourner 😉
Pour la météo tu avais annoncé la couleur 😎 et, par conséquent, je n'ai pas été surpris !!
A Yellowstone j'ai préféré ne pas insister tant le ciel était chargé, froid, pluie et humidité 🙁 je n'ai pas trouvé le coin trés attrayant, et puis les 6 jours prévus initialement pour ce parc ont été pris par Moab !!! Ce n'est que partie remise.
Pour illustrer ce qui précède, le manque d'intérêt pour les ciels trop chargés, 2 photos à 24h00 d'intervalle du Grand Téton 🤪
Tout à fait d'accord avec toi pour le South Dakota, j'ai adoré.
Mount Rushmore est une curiosité parmi tant d'autres et nous ne nous y sommes pas attardé 😉

Les Badlands c'est vraiment trés agréable et j'ai beaucoup aimé aussi la route 44 qui nous y a conduit.
Un petit arrêt à faire également dans Scenic, atmosphère étrange au rendez-vous.
D'une manière générale le Sud Dakota nous a laissé un excellent souvenir !!

So, here’s the plan: Montpellier-CDG-Dallas.
Stay from July 31 to August 26, 2026:
Car rental – check,
Hotels – check,
Itinerary – almost check,
Photo gear – check,

Fort Worth:
The Longhorns and the Stockyards;
JR’s ranch (for the missus);
Medal of Honor Museum – Arlington.
Houston and NASA Space Center:
See the Gulf of Mexico/America.
San Antonio and the missions.
Fort Stockton for an overnight stop.
El Paso via Guadalupe Mountains:
El Paso and White Sands.
Tucson and the Pima Air & Space Museum:
Tombstone, Bisbee.
Phoenix:

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

There are several attractions along the way:

- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
We found Emmanuelle and Isabelle, and wow, they were fantastic. It was just the two of us with them, so it was a truly VIP, ultra-personalized experience. They treated us like royalty from start to finish. These two live in Las Vegas and know the region like the back of their hand. The service was really personalized. They adapted to our pace and preferences, and we could stop whenever we wanted to take photos. It’s the luxury of being in a small private group—you’re not just a number on a big bus.
In short, we really felt like we were traveling with friends rather than professional guides. Everything’s included in the price (hotel pickup, meals, park entries, etc.), so the value for money is fair.
We loved it so much that we’re already planning to come back next year to explore other areas with them. I think we’ve caught the American West bug—it’s all we can think about, and we can’t wait to return.
