hi, we’re going on a cruise with MSC Virtuosa in the Caribbean. Has anyone done this cruise before and could give us some tips for excursions on the different islands? Thanks for your help

Hi there, if you have a layover in Honduras in Roatán, get in touch with Matthieu Bertholon. You can contact him on Messenger and Facebook. He’s a top-notch French-speaking guide. Cheers!

MSC VIRTUOSA CARIBBEAN CRUISE

Hi there, if you're considering a cruise that will go smoothly, don't read any further! We booked an MSC cruise to the Caribbean at the beginning of March. Before departure, MSC regularly emails you to sell advance services, so we had booked 3 excursions and internet packages. It was during the first one that the nightmare began. We chose GUA16, a visit to the botanical garden in Deshaies in Guadeloupe, followed by a beach stop (dangerous, avoid). In the description of this service, it mentions a visit to the botanical garden and 1 hour of RELAXATION on one of the largest beaches in Guadeloupe at Grande Anse. It doesn’t say "swimming," since swimming there is dangerous, which the guide explains on the bus. They invite you to stay on the sand. The currents are vicious, and the waves are powerful. My wife suffered a triple fracture of the tibial plateau on Sunday, March 8th, and the following Saturday, a swimmer drowned there. So we left the ship after just one day of the cruise, waiting for repatriation. Read your contracts (assistance and insurance) carefully before you go to avoid frustrations. For the spouse who stayed at the hotel during the hospitalization, assistance doesn’t cover everything, nor does the insurance. For example, the insurance reimburses the cruise on a pro-rata basis for the time spent on the ship but not the excursions or packages. When you ask MSC’s customer service (not very helpful in this case), they refer you to the insurance. So the unused excursions are "all profit" for them. The excursion description is tempting, but they send you into a trap for 2 x 78.40 €. At the ship’s clinic, they charge you 255 € for a consultation. If you get injured on the ship, it’s free. There’s a lot to say about VYV assistance, which supposedly takes care of everything but asks for the necessary documents for repatriation drop by drop (this made us spend and waste 3 days on-site). Moral of the story: don’t buy excursions in advance; for the uninjured spouse who disembarks and goes to a hotel, look for a room around 150 € per night including meals (good luck); don’t take a taxi to visit your partner in the hospital (transportation costs aren’t reimbursed). Otherwise, have a good trip, but honestly, MSC isn’t great! !
