Off to explore Lithuania!
December 13 - Day 1

"How about a Christmas market this year, huh? A little romantic weekend getaway... - Yes! That’d be cool! Strasbourg? Colmar? - Feels a bit déjà vu, doesn’t it? Plus, slim chance of snow there... And I’d love something a bit more exotic with a touch of originality..."

"Okay, Google, give me the list of the five most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe. - In fifth place, the Christmas market in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. - Save your breath! Lithuania, here we come!"

We wanted cold, and cold is exactly what we got the moment we set foot in this new, unknown land. As for landscapes, forests and lakes stretch as far as the eye can see across this vast plain, its vegetation scorched by the frost of a winter that’s clearly already well underway here.

Lakes, in fact, set the scene for our first visit to Trakai Castle, whose brick-red towers and walls rise proudly against the azure sky of our first day. Lakes, because this castle was built on an island and is only accessible on foot via a series of walkways spanning half-frozen lake offshoots. I couldn’t have picked a better spot to build my castle! Translation: We’re totally sold! Proof is we spend two hours hiking around the area, alternating between forests, reeds, and cozy houses tastefully decorated for Christmas.

Avis-Budget car rental scam in Lithuania: any advice?
Hi, What tips can you give me for dealing with a car rental scam attempt in Lithuania?

In our case, it’s the Avis-Budget agency in Vilnius trying to scam us.

We rented a car at Vilnius Airport for 2 weeks on July 28, 2019, to return it in Tallinn on August 11. We brought it back on August 11 at the airport, in perfect condition, and with a full tank at the gas station right by Tallinn Airport.

On the parking lot, the receptionist’s booth was closed. So we had to leave the car in the lot and go to the counter inside the airport. The person at the counter told us their colleague had gone for lunch! But they refused to come out and do the inspection with us because they were alone at the counter. They told us we could leave and that everything was fine!!!!

Two days later, we got an email from Avis-Budget with two invoices saying the car was damaged—scratched on both sides—and charging us for a full tank of gas. That’s two bills totaling 800 €!!!! Coincidentally, the deposit was 900 €!

It’s clear this isn’t over!! Have any of you been through the same nightmare? How did you handle it? Thanks in advance!

The Baltic Capitals in September 2025
Hi everyone,

First off, 12 days of great weather at the end of summer—my husband’s fleece jackets were totally unnecessary. We visited Vilnius, Riga, and Tallinn in that order, and it was a great tip. Vilnius is peaceful, very colorful, the food is delicious, street art is everywhere, and strolling through the historic center is really enjoyable. We stayed there for 2 nights. A 4-hour Lux Express bus ride was perfect for getting to Riga, where we spent 3 days. The city is a mix of medieval, Gothic, and Baroque art, with Orthodox churches and synagogues in the old town, plus an Art Nouveau district featuring the Rosenthal House. The central market looks austere and huge, facing the colorful walls of the tourist center—it’s a real pleasure to wander the cobblestone streets and taste the local cuisine, with its Germanic and Uzbek influences. In Tallinn, the highlight of the trip, we found Art Nouveau again, colorful walls, and a fitting reminder of the past at the Museum of Occupations. There’s a hipster district, a trendy area, stunning originality, and an unexpected maritime museum in its design. The city is at the cutting edge of technology, and the youth are everywhere. The welcome was friendly everywhere, and we’ll keep great memories of it.

Weather in the Baltic States in June
hi there we’re planning a trip to the three Baltic countries: Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. What’s making us hesitate is the weather—we think June might be the best time, but is the rain still moderate, or is it a real deal-breaker for the trip? Looking forward to your tips! jean-marie

Propane gas in the Baltic countries
Hi fellow travelers, I’m currently traveling around Europe and passing through the Baltic countries. My camper van is equipped with propane gas bottles for heating and the fridge. I still have a Swiss bottle left, and so far I’ve bought a new bottle in each country I’ve visited and returned it when leaving. In Lithuania, it seems complicated to get a new propane bottle (I’ve tried hardware stores and gas stations), but I’ve been told they don’t even exist here. In Switzerland, it’s illegal to refill bottles. Does anyone have info on where and how to buy a new, full propane gas bottle? I don’t have LPG installations in my camper van. Thanks for the tips! !

Connecting the Baltic capitals and tips
Hi there, I’m looking for some info on these capitals I’m visiting in September and the best way to travel between them, spending 3 days in each city: restaurants, weather, and maybe a French-speaking guide if possible. Thanks.
