Car rental in Seville: which location is the most convenient?

Hi there, We’re spending a week in Andalusia in April, starting with 2 days in Seville, then Córdoba, Granada, and Ronda. We’re thinking of renting a car the morning we leave Seville and returning it at the airport on the last day.

Do you know which downtown rental spot is the easiest for quickly getting out of the city? Or maybe it’s simpler to rent at the airport and leave the car in a parking lot for the first 2 days? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi there,

You can travel between these cities by train or bus.

Spaniards often use buses—there are several daily from Malaga to Ronda, with the trip taking about 2 hours or 2h30.

On the "Estación de Autobuses" (bus station) website for Malaga, you can find the bus schedules. They list the one-way fare from Malaga to Ronda as 12.72 €, but I’m not sure if that price is up to date. https://info.emtmalaga.es/estabus/#!/InfoDestino

Otherwise, with Seville, Granada, and Córdoba, you’ve already got enough to fill your week—maybe add Málaga to the mix.

We did the same route in reverse over two weeks, visiting more of the "white villages" and not just Ronda. We rented a car (only for the white villages) near Seville train station, returning it when we arrived in Granada. Cars are useless in tourist cities and expensive to park. It's best to choose accommodations that are well-located relative to the places you want to visit and to the transport links that serve tourist spots. It's easy to travel by train between Seville and Cordoba (a kind of TGV) as well as Cordoba to Granada.

Your itinerary is too packed unless you just want to see the sites from the outside without visiting them. For visits, you need to book in advance on the official monument websites—these are major global tourist hotspots. Have you checked the dates of religious holidays (Easter) and the Férias during your trip? Many accommodations are booked a year in advance. It's beautiful but very popular!

Your itinerary seems like you haven’t considered the travel time between cities. Organized tours that offer such dense itineraries quietly mention that, for example, the visit to Seville’s Alcázar (the city’s highlight) might be replaced with another visit (obviously cheaper, quicker, and less impressive). You won’t see the most beautiful parts of the Alhambra in Granada either...

Spain is so close (by plane)—why try to see almost everything in a week?

There are agencies around the train stations—no need to rent at the airport. Two years ago, we rented a car near Córdoba station and returned it in Seville. With the car, we visited Granada, Almuñécar, Ronda/Setenil, the white villages, Cádiz, and Baelo Claudia. We used reasonably priced underground parking near our accommodations in Granada and Cádiz. If we were to do it again, we’d do exactly the same thing. Public transport is perfect if you’re only visiting cities, but if you want more flexibility, nothing beats a car.
