Le bivouac en janvier, je pense que c'est trés limite, mais on réve tous de voir un peu de sable meme si nous sommes conscients de ne pouvoir pas voir le vrai désert. Que conseillez-vous, visites au dela de AIT BENHADDOU ? La ville de OUARZAZATE oui mais a petite dose. Un hébergement correct aux portes du désert ?

Si vous vous etes laissé prendre par une excursion de 2 jours (avec (ou sans ) bivouac) dans le ""désert"", en janvier, avec des journées très courtes, ne cherchez pas à voir quelque chose sur la route, vous n'en aurez pas le temps, ni Ouarzazate ni Ait Benhaddou !!
La première dune convenable ou il est organisé des bivouacs (en saison!! peut etre pas en janvier) est à 8 H de route, mini, plus 1 h d'approche, mini !
QU'appelles tu les "portes du désert' ?? jamais vu !! quelle est ensuite la longueur du couloir ???

je reformule ma demande. Nous sommes 6 fin janvier à Marrakech pour jours et nous souhaitons quitter un peu la ville pour 2 jours. Les agences proposent des excursions à environ 100 EUROS / PERS. D'aprés mes consultations sur le net, je pense que le mieux est de louer une voiture avec chauffeur. La direction envers OUARZAZATE et AIT BENHADDOU semble vraiment sympa. mais que faire, que visiter ou dormir ? certains ont certainement vécus cette expérience et ont peut-être de bonnes adresses ou idéee de circuit ? vous pouvez aussi me joindre en MP.
Je crois que tu as bien mieux à faire comme excursion que Ouarzazate.
La route Marrakech Ouarzazate prend environ 4h00 - 4h30 sans s'arrêter, et à part Télouet qui prend environ une heure de plus pour y aller, plus la visite, il n'y a rien à faire sur cette route, qui est une superbe collection de virages de montagne.
Si tu la fais en 4x4, la route sera encore plus longue, bien sûr.
En dehors de Telouet, tu as effectivement Ait Ben Haddou, la kasbah de Taourirt et les studios de cinema. Et l'oasis de Fint, si tu es en 4x4
Mais cela ne vaut pas une excursion rien que pour cela.
Pour deux jours, il vaut mieux aller vers le Tizi n'Test, vallée d'Asni, Tinmel, et même Taroudant (quoi que le Tizi n'Test est long, et pas toujours simple en hiver). Ou la vallée de l'Ourika. Ou Essaouira.
A Ait ben Haddou, tu n'auras que l'embarras du choix pour loger! Pas de soucis à te faire...
J'ai logé dernièrement dans la dernière auberge sur la droite en sortant du village vers Amniter (+-1km du centre). Elle est bien... mais j'ai oublié son nom...
De Ouarzazate tu pourrais aller jusqu'à l'oasis de Finnt (sud ouest de la ville...)
Je suggère
jour 1 : aller sur Ouarzazte en faisant le crochet de Telouet ( très joli, peu touristique, çà vaut le détour ); nuit à Aït Benhaddou
jour 2 : visite de Aït Benhaddou et d'une kasbah aux alentours ou flâner à Ouarzazte ; kasbah et coopérative des tapis en face : pour les studios de cinéma, c'est cher pour ce que c'est, mais à vous de juger!et retour tranquille sur Marrakech

nous sommes rentrés hier du maroc, et je peux te faire partager nos impressions .Pour éviter la pluie nous avons modifié notre itinéraire, et avons trouvé un guide officiel, qui nous a (après négociation) proposé de prendre son propre véhicule, pour 30€/j+35€pour son travail de guide, soit 65€/j + l'essence et les hebergements.
Guide réglo, un peu froid au départ, mais cela s'arrange, pendant le voyage.
Nous sommes partis 3 jours/3 nuits, pour zagora, avec escale à Ourzazate à l'aller et au retour.
pour les hebergements, ça dépend de ton budget, et du niveau de confort recherché.( chauffage impératif ?)
nous n'avons pas aimé l'hotel " la valléé " à ouarzazate 400dh les deux 1/2 pensions, nous avons trouvé l'hotel " cos'one", pour 100dh de + beaucoup mieux (il faut toujours négocier, surtout si l'hotel est presque vide)
ne pas rater le salon de thé " le haoudes" sur la place de ouarzazate, j'ai jamais mangé de patisseries orientales aussi bonnes, ni trop grasses, ni trop sucrées.
Le village ait benadou est à voir, beau panorama.
Nous n'avons pas trop aimé la route de marrakech à ouarzazate, le paysage n'est pas à couper le souffle.La vallée du Draa est + chouette, en continuant sur zagora.
pour les restos, ne pas hésiter à s'arreter dans des restos, type routier, peu engageant, si tu oublies la déco et l'aspect un peu crade, tu peux manger un excellent tajine avec des fruits en déssert, pour 3 euros par tête.
Notre projet initial, s'il n'avait pas plu, était de faire les cascades d'ouzoud, le lac de bin el ouidane et le pont naturel à iminifri.ça peut se faire en 2 jours, en prenant le temps de se ballader sur place, perso je pense que c'est mieux que de faire aller et retour ouarzazate.

Oui, tu rajoutes 15 à 20 et tu es bon ! 3h 30 de route en bourrant ! X 2 !! quand il fait nuit, et qu'il peut geler, à 17 h, ne pas oublier ! !!!
Ta question ne parlait pas de Ouarzazate, mais de bivouacs, ou de "portes du désert", dans ce cas tu multiplie par 2, ce que j'ai écrit!
Sur 2 jours, en janvier, Marrakech Ait Benhaddou, traversée rapide de Ouarzazate ou il n'y a rien à faire ni voir, et nuit à Skoura, (cehez talout, à Dar panorama, à L'auberge famille ben moro, au gite slimani, ..),

Je viens pour donner un complément d'infos concernant votre "rêve" : voir les dunes.
En effet, 2 jours c'est possible mais pied au plancher et avec un 4x4 pour le final.
Une des solutions, si vous voulez vraiment voir du sable, est de louer un véhicule sans chauffeur ( aucun problème de circulation jusqu'à zagora et mhamid) et de se rendre à Zagora directement ( on peut au passage voir rapidement aït ben haddou à l'aller ou au retour ) . Une bonne adresse, l'hôtel "la fibule du draa ", pour l'étape du soir et là vous demandez un chauffeur avec 4x4 pour vous conduire à l'erg chegaga le lendemain . Départ le matin de bonne heure, circuit vers chegaga, en passant ou non à mhamid, balade dans les dunes et retour zagora vers 16 h . De là deux solutions, couché à l'hôtel ou reprise de la voiture pour Ouarzazate, avec visite au retour de aït ben haddou et ensuite marrakech .
Bien entendu, cela prend 3 jours mais dépaysement assuré !

En 02 jours je vous propose, après la location de voiture, de prendre la route vers ZAGORA vrai porte de désert y dormir le soir (en passant par AIT BEN HADDOU compter sur 08 heures pour arriver à ZAGORA), demain de bon matin faire le lever du soleil sur des hautes dunes de sable (dites sable d'or) de TINFOU à 30Km de ZAGORA, de retour et à 08Km une visite de la librairie et de la poterie de TAMEGROUTE s'impose. de là retour vers MARRAKECH (Déjeuner et petite tournée vers la kasbah de taoirirte à OUARZAZATE).

ceci est la plus grosse supercherie, vendue à Marrakech, à Ouarzazate, à Zagora, comme "nuit dans le désert"
La dune de Tinfou, 200 m de long, quelques dizaines de metres de large, quelques metres de haut, est un tas de sable que l'on croirait posé la veille par 2 ou 3 camions.
Quelques rabatteurs parmi les plus agressifs du Maroc en ont fait le plus décevant des fonds de commerce de l'arnaque "désert" !!
Et ça marche !! et ils viennent chercher ici, en public, mais surtout en MP, leurs prochaines proies !
Mr ALIBAB cherchait voir vivre un moment désertique même en cette courte durée et ça serait pratique de visiter ZAGORA la porte du désert et pas loin, à 30 KMs, à TINFOU des dunes de sable naturelles(voir photos attachées). là, Mr Raoulx ce sont pas des dunes artificielles transportées par des camions comme vous dites, pour plus de renseignements ou pour regarder des reportages en vidéos même sur ces dunes, une simple requête sur le net (dunes de tinfou zagora par exemple) suffit. J'avais eu l'occasion de visiter la vallée de DARAA en février 2006, c'était formidable sur tous les plans et je me suis très satisfait.
notre guide nous proposait de descendre jusqu'à mahmid à environ 80 kms au sud de zagora, pour partir en dromadaire pour un bivouac, cela te semble t'il plus sérieux comme proposition.
Le tarif proposé ( certainement négociable) était de 450 dh par personne la nuit en bivouac avec repas du soir et petit dej.
J'ai quelques adresses, mais sur conseils je cherche avec chauffage. tu peux me faire des propos en MP. Pour ouarzazate, il semble qu'il n'y pas grand chose à voir. je n'ai pas envie de voir les studios, je m'oriente vers l'oasis Fint. J'abandonne le désert ... SNIF ...

sauf si on te dis que c est fermè en bas du col dans ce cas il vaut mieux se reseigner dans n importe quelle gendarmerie avant de prendre laroute (c est un conseil)
Je l'avais dis juste au dessus qu'il y aune 2ième route, faut suivre.
Effectivement, plusieurs cols, on reste longtemps au dessu de 2000m.
Pas de ravitaillement possible (essence et bouf), par contre plus jolie et quelle tranquilité de rouler alors que par le tichka, c'est chiant. (prévoir 1h de plus). Quand je promène des amis, je fais un coup par le tichka et le retour par l'autre route. L'idéal en plus c'est au pont naturel d' ifinifri de manger un tagine lapin et de l'autre côté à skoura un repas en terrasse chez Talout.

Route trés dangereuse surtout en hiver, il ya pas mal de temps que des touristes et leur guide ont disparus à cause des tempête de neige.

Here’s a first draft for a 14-night itinerary during the Christmas break with two teens. We’re especially fond of hiking (nothing too extreme, though), which is why we’re drawn to the south.
- Marrakech (2 nights)
- Aït Ben Haddou (1 night)
- Dadès (3 nights, though we’re thinking of doing a day trip to the Todra Gorge on one of those days)
- M'hamid (1 night)
- Erg Chigaga (1 night)
- 4 nights to slot in

Okay, I realize this involves a lot of driving, and we’re still debating the return route since we’d like to avoid the Tichka Pass in January, but going through Taroudant seems like it would add *a lot* of time. 😕
If you’ve got other suggestions for an itinerary with great hikes, I’m all ears!
Also, the 4 nights total in MRK isn’t really our preference, but since we’re arriving/departing super early from overseas, we’d like to be a bit rested before the long flight.

Skoura - Tinghir - Merzouga
Merzouga via the N12 to Zagora
Zagora - Draa Valley - Marrakech
It seems to be the low season, so I’d love to travel without having to book accommodations in advance. In other countries, pre-booking has restricted us and kept us from visiting unplanned sites. Freedom is important to us, but I’d also like to avoid arriving somewhere and finding nothing available.
What do you recommend? Book ahead or not?

First of all: a big thank you to everyone whose insightful, funny, lively, and exotic posts we’ve enjoyed. It’s a joy to find such lovely writers on this forum, who’ve given me tons of ideas and addresses to prepare our trip.
Our plan: to explore Morocco from November 2nd to December 4th. We’ll have our own vehicle (a 2011 Renault Grand Scenic, in great condition), shipped with us from Sète to Tanger Med. Returning from Nador.
Our profile: 75 and 62 years young, so old but happy to be, in very good health. Seasoned travelers—it’s practically our whole life. Lovers of beautiful landscapes, historic sites, fine craftsmanship, and road trips. This will be my 3rd trip to Morocco, but the first two were 20 and 17 years ago. I’ve never been north of the Essaouira-Marrakech line (though I’ve gone further south). As for my husband, a lifelong expat including in Muslim countries, it’s his first time in Morocco.
He’s the one driving. He’s very experienced, cautious, not necessarily fast, but used to driving in all conditions (and countries, including the most creative on the road). But I don’t want to tire him out, and he no longer drives at night (and we’ll be there in November).
I’ve decided to show him a bit of everything by taking a road trip along beautiful backroads, with daily distances averaging 180-200 km (except on highways, which will be rare), regularly broken up by rest days. I’m counting on a speed of 40-50 km/h, plus stops/visits along the way.
Since I’ve read so many posts, I’ve narrowed it down to some very specific questions.
1) Coming directly from Rabat via the highway, we’d prefer to skip Marrakech*. Still, we’ll need to sleep somewhere nearby. We’ll head toward Skoura the next day. Does anyone have a well-located address for this route, possibly east of Marrakech? Ideally, we’re looking for a small town, easy parking, clean accommodation (minimum) with average comfort (or better if available), a bit heated, and if possible, pretty and/or nice—but above all, a place to sleep well, wash with lukewarm (ideally hot) water, and have a decent dinner.
(*Explanation for the "no-go" in Marrakech: it’s a shame, because there are truly beautiful things in this city, but I think the vibe won’t suit us—it’s an understatement for "it’ll put us off" / "make us flee" / "traumatize us." Not because it’s too crowded and we want to stand out from tourists (we’re part of them), but because of forced henna on your hand, or spending 10 minutes every quarter-hour saying "no thank you" to a "guide" who’s as much a guide as I am a trapeze artist. Knowing us, it’ll wear us down. The country is vast and beautiful, and our time too short to waste our memories just days after arriving. And I don’t want to ruin things for my peaceful husband, or he’ll demand we turn back—and Sète in November isn’t exactly thrilling either.)
2) Which route to Skoura (in 2 days)? I see two options: either via the Tichka Pass, with a night in Telouet before reaching Skoura, or via the R307/N23 from Demnate, with a night near Megdaz before descending to Skoura. So: Tichka Pass or R307/N23? I have a slight (big) preference for the second option, even though I know the other route is very beautiful too. Of course, before deciding, we’ll check the weather and the current state of the R307/N23—does anyone know where to get info on the road conditions? But even assuming the road is "passable," is it a bit too tough in itself? In short, is it reasonable? If a kind soul could share their experience, a thousand thanks in advance.

We found a guide who offers the trip from M'hamid to a camp (departure at 3 PM, tea, meal, camel ride, overnight stay, breakfast, and return to M'Hamid by 11 AM the next day via the sacred oasis). He quoted us a price of 380 € for April.

I’ve read through the various discussions about the country, but I’m still a bit unsure🤪: for currency exchange, I saw on the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs website that withdrawing currency with a bank card from ATMs is limited to 200 TND per week. There are four of us traveling by car, so that might be a bit tight! And it’s a hassle to carry a lot of cash, even if I’m not being paranoid! What do you all recommend?

After many trips to the south of Fès, I’m giving the north a try.
My plan is roughly to do a road trip loop from Rabat back to Rabat, passing through Asilah, Tangier, Tétouan, Chefchaouen, Akchour, Fès, Meknès, and Volubilis.
That’s a lot of cities.
Probably a bit too many for our taste—we usually prefer more isolated spots...
So I’m looking for tips on little backroads, secluded beaches, half-day hikes, and offbeat places.
If you’ve also got recommendations for accommodation... (We’re open to splurging over 100 € if it’s a real favorite.)

I’ve started making a few pre-bookings for hotels and apartments to rent in Algiers. At first, I received friendly and welcoming responses. Then, when I mentioned I wanted to stay for two or three weeks—maybe even a month—explaining that my trip wouldn’t be strictly touristy but more of a pilgrimage to the places of my childhood, and that it would likely be a very emotional journey, I expected a positive and warm reaction to my approach. Instead, I suddenly stopped getting replies from the three or four people I’d contacted. So now I’m wondering about the reception former Pieds-Noirs can expect...
Anyone here who can share their experience of returning? I specified “recently” because it seems that right now, diplomatic relations between the two governments are extremely tense, not to say hostile... even if Macron claims otherwise...

I’d love to hear from anyone who’s been through the process about the accommodation attestation required for the visa application:
- Does it need to cover the entire duration of the trip?
- Is this document mandatory for a hotel to rent a room?
- Is it checked during inspections?
- Is a hotel booking (e.g., via Booking.com) sufficient for the visa?
- If so, does it need to be paid in advance?
I plan to visit several cities and do one or more treks with a guide or agency.

I’m leaving for Tunisia in five weeks for a full 15-day trip. I’ll be arriving in Monastir and departing from there as well.
I’d like to do a route that’s a bit different from my first stay, which was more focused on cities and culture (Tunis, Sousse, Kairouan, El Jem).
I’ll be getting around by public transport.
I’d like to head south toward Tozeur, and I saw that you can take a *louage* from Monastir to Sbeitla (2h30). I imagine it’s not too complicated to get to Tozeur from there afterward? The issue is the return trip to Monastir and safety in Sbeitla.
If this route seems too complicated, I might opt for Djerba instead, which looks simpler.
