Je suis étudiant en école de design à Nantes et dans le cadre d’un projet personnel j’ai décidé d’étudier le phénomène des « routards » ; dans mon esprit, ces personnes qui voyagent à travers le monde pour des périodes plus ou moins longues en sortant des parcours organisés par les tours opérateur.
J’ai parcouru le site, très intéressant, pour me faire une idée globale de ce que peut être un tel voyage mais je voudrai recueillir les impressions de personnes ayant vécu ces expériences pour éviter les clichés et les idées reçues. SI vous avez le temps et la gentillesse de bien vouloir m’aider, j’aimerai savoir les raisons pour lesquelles vous voyagez, quel équipement vous prenez (utilisez-vous un sac ? que mettez-vous dedans ? ), quels objets sont indispensables ( y’en a-t-il ? )... N’hésitez pas à me fournir toute autre informations qui vous paraissent importantes à savoir ou même des détails ( derrière lesquels se cachent souvent des choses essentielles ).

je me suis sans doute mal exprimé mais ce qui m'intéresse ce sont les témoignages personnels, chacun ayant sa propre façon de voyager ( durée, accompagné ou pas, pays, niveau de préparation etc..) et d'approcher ces voyages. Le site regorge en effet de recommandations et de témoignages mais ( j'ai peut-être mal cherché ) je n'ai pas réussi à trouver ce que je cherche. Si tu peux me donner des exemples de discussions qui pourraient me "convenir" n'hésite pas à me les fournir ( ou même d'autres sites ). Merci d'avance à toi et à quiconque acceptera de m'aider

je sais pas trop si je reponds aux criteres routard, mais bon. Je voyage en dehors des circuits organisés parce que je prefere choisir mon itineraire, pouvoir changer d'avis et de direction, rester un peu plus longtemps, ou moins. Aussi, je n'aime pas etre avec un groupe. Et puis je ne suis pas forcement attirée par les grosses attractions. Voyager en "routard" permet aussi de voyager moins cher, et donc plus loin et/ou plus longtemps. On est plus en contact avec les gens qui vivent dans les endroits qu'on traverse, on rencontre plus de monde.
Coté equipement, un bon sac a dos, c'est le plus pratique. Je le fais le plus leger possible, mais ce que je mets dedans depend forcement de ma destination. Ca ne depend pas vraiment du temps que je pars, par contre, car comme beaucoup de gens te le diront, tu prends presque autant de bagages pour 2 semaines ou 1 an.
Et les indispensables, selon moi, c'est le couteau pour eplucher les fruits, couper une cordelette, etc. Et le bouquin (pour les loooongues heures d'attente).

Je vais faire une petit peu mon commisaire de police 😉 mais est ce que tu pourrais me dire dans quels genre d'endroits tu dors, mange ( habitants, hotels...)? Quand tu parles de rencontrer des personnes, tu parles des autochtones ou alors des autres voyageurs ( ou les deux)? Tu pars toute seule? dans quels types de pays? combien de temps? qu'est ce que tu recherches quand tu voyages? pour ton équipement, tu as des marques spécialisées pour ces voyages ( tu prends un gros sac de type randonneur )? ça fait un peu interrogatoire 😉 dsl mais ça me permettrait de cerner un peu le type de voyage que tu pratiques.

Alors, je dors dans des hostels et auberges de jeunesse, dans des guesthouses, dans une voiture, sous une tente... En fait, je cherche en général les petits budgets, et je ne regarde pas beaucoup le confort. Je loge rarement chez l'habitant, plutot chez des amis ou des amis d'amis. J'ai passé deux mois dans une famille au Ghana, mais c'est plus vraiment du routard du coup. Pour manger, dans certains hostels il y a des cuisines ou tu peux faire a manger, sinon dans un restaurant, dans un snack, dans la rue, chez quelqu'un. Il n'y a pas vraiment d'habitude.
Quant aux rencontres, c'est un élément essentiel du voyage, je trouve. Tu rencontres des gens qui vivent ici et qui vont te parler du coin, de leur vie, de leur philosphie, de leur culture, ou bien qui vont te donner un coup de main. Et bien sur, les autres voyageurs, dans les gares routieres, dans les hostels, dans un bar, avec qui tu partages tes experiences, tes bons plans, tes galères, tes repas, la vie. Je pars la plupart du temps avec mon copain, parfois avec des amis, rarement seule. De toute façon, on ne reste pas longtemps seul si on ne le veut pas.
Je pars dans des endroits ou j'ai envie d'aller. Pas de critère particulier, juste "tiens, j'aimerai bien aller, la". Et la longueur depend de mon budget, de ce que je veux voir et faire, et de ma disponibilité, enfin comme tout le monde, quoi. Je peux partir pour un long weekend ou pour plusieurs mois.
Je comprends pas trop ce que tu cherches, vraiment. Mais si tu veux savoir ce que c'est voyager avec un sac a dos, achete un sac a dos, un billet d'avion, de train ou de bus et pars. Tu rencontreras plein de gens qui voyagent comme toi et tu pourras discuter avec eux de manière plus sympathique!😉 Et pour preparer ton voyage, tu trouves plein d'infos sur ce forum et d'autres.

Par contre, tu devrais avoir des questions précises, il sera plus facile pour toi d'avoir des réponses.
Pourquoi je voyage?
Par curiosité: j'aime apprendre et pratiquer les langues, donc en général, je voyage dans des pays dont je connais la langue, ou je reste dans un pays donné suffisamment longtemps pour en apprendre la langue découvrir d'autres cultures, dans mon cas en particulier tout ce qui touche aux traditions (musique, danses, mariages...) voir des paysages grandioses et différents de ceux que je connais rencontrer des gens (c'est peut-être le poins le plus important) d'autres pays/cultures
Pour me retrouver seule avec moi-même, loin de chez moi (ça aide de voir les choses de loin, pour prendre des décisions par exemple).
J'ai aussi voyagé à plusieurs, avant d'être majeure, et c'était une chouette expérience aussi, mais les contacts avec les autochtones étaient moindres.
Voyager seul-e permet de changer d'avis à tout moment, sans discuter.
Je ne rencontre pas très souvent d'autres voyageurs. Peut-être parce que je ne dors pas à l'hôtel ni en auberges de jeunesse, et aussi parce que souvent je choisis de partir hors-saison (je n'aime pas la foule, limite agoraphobe). Soit je suis autonome (tente), soit je dors chez des amis, amis d'amis, soit je passe par des sites d'hébergement (couchsurfing, hospitalityclub). J'aime voyager seule, mais pas être seule à 100% du temps.
Le sac: un sac à dos, encore trop gros à mon goût (il doit faire 40L), et je le fais le plus léger possible. J'y mets la même chose pour un petit voyage d'un mois ou lorsque je pars habiter ailleurs pour un an soit en gros:2/3 pantalonsautant de tee-shirts2 pulls2/3 robes/jupes1écharpe (ah non 2! cette fois-ci) un bon duvet ultra-léger une tente ultra-légère
Bon et j'ai la flemme de faire la liste complète... le reste est variable de toutes façons.
Souvent, je prends beaucoup de musique (de chez moi, et autres) pour échanger danses et musiques avec les gens que je rencontre. Parfois je m'emcombre même de cassettes, car je fais beaucoup de stop et les conducteurs n'ont souvent que des lecteurs de cassettes.
Objet indispensable: un bon feutre (ou tout truc qui écrit, même du rouge à lèvre) pour mes panneaux de stop, de la ficelle, mon carnet de voyage.
Objet quasi-indispensable que je n'ai pas encore, hélas: un enregistreur mini-disc assorti d'un bon micro, pour enregistrer les ambiances, les musiques, les chants.
Un ami m'a dit: Le monde serait meilleur si chacun-e regardait dans l'assiette de l'autre et y rajoutait ce qu'il y manque
Je ne me considère pas vraiment comme une routarde car j'ai certaines exigences et je me permets certains luxes dans la limite de mon budget
Par exemple, je n'envisageais pas trop de dormir plusieurs nuit de suite dans des hôtels sans eau chaude quand j'étais à Cuzco ou Puno au Pérou parce que ça caillait vraiment trop. Je ne suis pas du tout camping mais cela ne me gêne pas de passer la nuit dans un bus.
Autre exemple: il m'est arrivé de louer des voitures 2-3 jours pour me faciliter la visite de sites difficilement accessibles en transports en commun.
Par contre, je corresponds à ta description dans le sens où je n'aime pas les voyages organisés. Pourquoi? je n'aime pas les ambiances de groupe, souvent lourdes et envahissantes (seule exception: mes voyages plongée, mais je choisis bien les organismes avec lesquels je pars) la liberté de partir, de rester, de changer d'itinéraire, de suivre les aléas de la météo, du budget, des rencontres, des envies. La liberté donc! mon conjoint est un photographe amateur passionné, ce qui n'est pas très compatible avec le déplacement en troupeau. Je ne compte pas les levers en trombe pour ne pas manquer LE lever de soleil ou LA bonne lumière, ni les heures à regarder le paysage changer, à attendre le coucher du soleil, ou simplement attendre que les troupeaux aient disparu du cadre.
Ce que j'aime dans le voyage indépendant, c'est la rencontre des autres, la liberté (j'insiste), le privilège d'avoir des lieux magiques pour soi seul (ou presque) et surtout le privilège d'avoir le temps.
Nous partons généralement avec des sac à dos, pas trop rempli car nous faisons les lessives sur place.
Indispensable: l'appareil photo le couteau le lecteur mp3 (je ne peux pas vivre sans musique) la crème solaire (j'ai tendance à cramer en moins de 5 minutes)
Je choisis mes voyages en fonction de mes envies et de mon budget. La durée la plus fréquente: 28 à 30 jours, car au delà les billets d'avions sont généralement plus chers (pourquoi? cela reste un mystère pour moi).

Malgré certains articles erronés, Wikipédia est une source d'infos riche et pratique, en plein essor.
Mais comme toujours quand on veut s'informer, il ne faut pas se contenter d'une source.
Wikipédia est une encyclopédie collaborative en ligne, universelle et multilingue[1] fonctionnant avec le principe wiki.
Wikipédia a pour principe d'offrir un contenu libre, neutre et vérifiable que chacun peut éditer et améliorer.
Il s'agit donc d'un site en construction, et, en tant que tel, il ne contient à l'heure actuelle ni la qualité ni tous les articles qu'il ambitionne d'avoir — cette ambition, il faut le noter, dépassant de loin celles des encyclopédies « papier ».
Tu sais, les autres encyclopedies non plus ne sont pas fiables a 100%... Le taux de fiabilite de Wiki est proche de celui des encyclopedies celebres, il me semble meme qu'une etude recente a montre qu'il etait meilleur.
Les raisons pour quoi je voyage sont nombreuse, c'est premièrement pour un sentiment de liberté totale, surtout parce que je pars seul, mais je fais de nombreuse rencontres une fois sur place, ensuite la seconde raison, c'est de pouvoir découvrir de nouvelles façon de vivre, des civilisation. Pour ma part, qui suis nul à l'école, je prends plus de plaisir à me faire raconter le crash économique argentin, la civilisation incas, apprendre à jouer du charango, en gros du apprends beaucoup en voyage ! pour ce qui est du sac, tu peux voir sur mon site, j'ai fais une rubriques "infos" peut-être que cette rubrique t'intéressera pour ton exposé. I’m a teacher in Creuse, working in a ULIS program (which welcomes children aged 6 to 12 with disabilities into a mainstream school). This year, I’m starting a school journal project that will involve the kids in many different topics. A big part of the journal will focus on opening up to the world, diversity, travel, countries, culture...
I’m launching a call to invite as many of you as possible to send us a little postcard (from France or anywhere in the world!) to take us on a journey and help us discover new places, countries, and horizons—much more fun and exciting than a regular geography textbook! One section of our journal could be called "We received mail from " and would be an opportunity to research that location and share what we learn with our readers (a super enriching activity in class).
The project starts in September 2025 but has no real end date, as this journal and world discovery initiative will span several school years (the kids stay in my ULIS program for multiple years). Postcards can be sent anytime—throughout the year, across seasons, even during holidays! (The kids will find them when they return.)
I hope this idea appeals to as many of you as possible and that you’ll spread the word to your fellow traveler friends. Make us dream, take us on a journey!!!

I just discovered a great show on Arte.
It's called "7 en route": seven young European journalists travel around Europe in a fully converted bus, making reports on every city they visit. It's amazing! 🙂
Yesterday, for example, they were in Rome, Italy, and the reports included things like the world's smallest restaurant—a super romantic spot for two. There was also a report on the king of paparazzi in Italy.
They have to pick topics that let us discover the little quirks of each country. And at the end of each episode, we get to see the finished report.
It's such a great show, mixing journalism, travel, and discovery—basically, a must-watch!

After a quarter without dragging my slippers around here, even though I’d loudly declared I had no interest left in this site, here I am again!
My imagination never stays fallow for long. Just enough time for my inner land to rest. It gets overgrown with fresh nettles, the kind you can pick without getting stung. Then, it’s time to till the fragrant earth and let the story grow.
I hesitated over where to set this story.
Maybe the Highlands, maybe the Hebrides, maybe the Orkney Islands, maybe the Shetland Islands. All of Scotland is myth—easy to embroider.
But in the end, no. I’d almost be too afraid to bare my soul.
The story will take place at home. Simple, practical.

This morning, I was up well before dawn, feeling a bit grumpy, but nothing a bowl of coffee won’t fix. I love my bowl, and no one dares take it. It’s porcelain, edged with intertwined blue flowers. On the bottom, it says "Revol." The factory has existed long before the Revolution. It was my great-grandmother’s bowl. She drank roasted barley from it during the war, then her Leroux chicory.
Last year, a little guy dropped it. My bowl broke into three pieces. A black anger vibrated deep inside me. The little boy was so upset, on the verge of tears. How could I scold him!
I picked up the three pieces and took Little Boy in my arms. His hair smelled of the light, sweet sweat of toddlers. A gentle hug that healed—his budding sorrow and my anger—everything vanished, and time carried on.
Today, my bowl is even prettier. Man fixed it using the traditional kintsugi technique, except he didn’t use gold powder or lacquer but superglue, and he delicately painted the cracks with woad blue. And my bowl is even more beautiful now.
I’m lingering, I can tell—it’s just that a story wraps itself in life, and life can’t be told in the snap of a finger. Life is long. Like in architecture, you start with a rough sketch, called a "sous-cul" (the initial pencil drawing), then you make a tracing, which is the work itself, the one you later carefully roll up in a wooden tube.
Life is like that: you erase, you start over, you use the nub of the pencil until it’s tiny, but you keep going—dreaming, loving.

On this forum, we talk a lot about trekking in the Himalayas, but I’d love to share another side of Nepal: its spiritual, cultural, and religious atmosphere, especially in Kathmandu.
Nepal, much like Tibet and Bhutan, is deeply connected to the Himalayas—the ultimate sacred mountain range. This small country exudes a calming vibe, shaped by a strong spiritual dimension. What I loved most was the unique sensory experience you get there. Walking around temples and tantric monasteries, a distinct scent fills the air—aromatic plants used for ritual fumigation. Locals mainly burn Himalayan juniper, cedar, sandalwood, and other local essences. This fragrant smoke is a way to purify the space and reach the deities, and you’re constantly enveloped in these aromas.
Another striking aspect is the sound. As soon as you step outside, you hear bells ringing in front of temples. People ring them three times before praying to announce their presence to the deities. Nepal is also the birthplace of singing bowls and sound meditation practices. In Kathmandu, you can easily find meditation sessions or "sound baths."
The spiritual dimension is everywhere: a Hindu sadhu practicing asceticism, a lama in deep red robes with his mala, turning a prayer wheel while murmuring "Om mani padme hum." Newar Buddhism, Tantrism, and Hinduism coexist harmoniously in daily life.

I’m planning a 3-week trip to Japan in May with Voyage Privé. The package includes a 5 GB eSIM, but my phone isn’t new enough to support it. VP told me I could buy a SIM card when I arrive at the airport.
Sure enough, I’ve seen online that this is possible with different providers.
I only need it for checking routes, looking up addresses, train schedules, etc.—basically using Google Maps, TripAdvisor, and similar apps. No heavy downloads or major internet use. All hotels should provide free Wi-Fi for that, right?

I’d like to know if you can buy reef-safe sunscreen sprays at 7-Eleven. If so, how much do they cost? We’re traveling with backpacks, so we’ll either buy 100ml here or in Thailand.
I wanted to share a really unpleasant experience from our last trip booked with Promoséjours and organized by FTI.
We booked an 8-day/7-night stay in Egypt, from June 8 to 15.
The flight initially scheduled was changed a week before departure to take off at 10 PM from Paris CDG.
In the end, it took off with a 1-hour delay and included an unmentioned stopover in Marsa Alam.
We landed in Hurghada at 4 AM and arrived at the hotel at 6 AM.
So, we spent our first night on the plane.
For the return trip, surprise—the flight was moved up. We left the hotel at 10:30 PM on Friday the 14th to take off at 2 AM and land at 7 AM at Paris CDG.
So, we spent our last night on the plane too.
After sending a complaint letter to Promoséjours / FTI, they replied that the first and last days can be dedicated to transport (which I already knew) and that no matter how many nights you book, you’re not guaranteed to spend them in the hotel—it could just as well be on the plane.
I’m really questioning this.
Isn’t there a law that protects customers in cases like this?
Because when I do the math, the first and part of the second day were spent on transport, same for the second-to-last and last day. And I paid for 7 nights for a stay that only lasted 5.
Anyway, I just want to say thanks to them—thanks to their two sleepless nights in transit, I’m coming back even more exhausted from a trip that was supposed to be restful!
I also want to warn anyone booking through this agency about visas for Egypt.
At booking, they told me the visa was included in the price, then they sent me an email saying I’d have to pay for it on-site at 25 €.
Once there, we were directed to a special line for FTI customers, and guess what? They charged us 30 €!
Basically, they’re great at making sure you *enjoy* your vacation—mostly by enjoying your wallet!
If anyone has dealt with this kind of situation and won their case, I’m all ears.

I’m heading to Thailand for two months.
So I thought I’d get a Thai SIM card to use Google Maps for getting around cities, mostly.
Here’s my question: will this SIM affect my apps? Or will they work the same as with my Orange SIM?
Is there any setup I need to do, or can I just pop in the Thai SIM?
I’d also like to switch back to my Orange SIM now and then while I’m in Thailand—on the same phone. Will I need to reset the phone, or will it reconnect without any issues?

I’m reaching out to all travelers and globe-trotters on this forum. I’m a teacher in Creuse working in a ULIS program (which welcomes children aged 6 to 12 with disabilities into a mainstream school). This year, I’m launching a school journal project that will involve the kids in many different topics. A big part of this journal will focus on opening up to the world, embracing differences, travel, global cultures, and more.
I’m putting out a call to invite as many of you as possible to send us a postcard (from France or anywhere in the world)! The goal is to help us "travel" and discover new places, countries, and horizons in a way that’s much more fun and exciting than a geography textbook. One section of our journal could be called "We received a letter from ," where we’d research the location and share what we learn with our readers—a really enriching activity for the classroom.
The project starts in September 2025 but doesn’t have a strict end date, since this journal and world-discovery initiative will span several school years (the kids stay in the ULIS program for multiple years). Postcards can be sent anytime—throughout the year, across seasons, even during holidays! The kids will find them when they return.
I hope this idea appeals to as many of you as possible, and that you’ll spread the word to your fellow travelers. Help us dream and explore!

Here’s the thing: during our trip there in April, we discovered a jewelry artisan (highly recommended!) on the left when exiting through the west exit of Nishiki Market (which is a long covered east-west street). I bought a piece of jewelry for my daughter there, but she lost it. I’d love to buy her another one! In the photo, it’s the shop with the yellow awning to the right of the restaurant with the blue awning, "Sushi Sakai."
