Good evening everyone,

I’m leaving for Malaysia very soon with my 3-year-old daughter—this will be her first big trip! As a former backpacker, I’m finally taking my little one to discover Asia, starting with Malaysia 😊 We’re traveling from December 7th to January 5th, and I’d like to split our stay into 5 must-see spots where we can settle in comfortably for about 5 days each. Given that we’ll definitely spend a few days near Kuala Lumpur upon arrival, that I *must* take her to Malaysian Borneo to see the orangutans, and that I’d also love to relax with her on some beautiful beaches in the east ☀️

Do you have any recommendations or must-see tips?

Are there any cool guesthouses in Kuala Lumpur or nearby where we might meet other families?

Are there places that are especially great for kids—or, on the contrary, places to avoid?

Are there other solo-parent families traveling in the area around the same time as us?

Thanks so much for your kind and alternative suggestions 🤗

Kudos for the idea (and maybe for a certain courage!). Malaysia is one of the 'easiest' destinations in Asia, definitely with a young child… but the end-of-year period, especially in Borneo, is also one of the hottest and, above all, one of the rainiest!!! Also check the necessary vaccinations for traveling there? In any case, it’s never too early to start.

Have a great and safe trip.

Hello,

We went to Malaysia this summer, including a week in Borneo, with our two kids (6 and 8 years old). You’re in for a treat! 🙂

In Borneo, we stayed around Kuching: - The "downtown" area (waterfront and surrounding) is really nice. We visited the Borneo Cultures Museum, which the kids loved. - Bako National Park: amazing, but book accommodation on-site—otherwise, it might feel a bit rushed with a child. I’m not sure how well your daughter walks, but there are several short trails you can do. We saw proboscis monkeys right in the camp, and the night walk is kid-friendly. Just a heads-up: the park’s bungalows are popular, so book well in advance. Also, keep in mind there might be critters (snakes, spiders, and other fun surprises). The kids had a blast—they felt like real explorers. - For orangutans, we went to Semenggoh. It was nice, but it didn’t stand out as much for us since it’s quite organized. That said, if you want to see these monkeys deep in the jungle, far from human activity, it’s a whole different level of effort! - We stayed in a homestay in a village (Saloma Homestay). It was great for the kids, with lots of fun activities (hikes and swimming in jungle waterfalls, jungle cooking with ingredients picked along the way...). It was a bit pricey, though, and there’s a short walk involved. If your daughter walks well (or with occasional carrying), it should be manageable.

For beaches, we spent a few days on Kapas Island. I can’t compare it to other islands since I haven’t been, but it was fantastic. It might be a bit small for very active adults, but with kids, we didn’t mind at all. Gorgeous beaches, lovely marine life, baby turtles hatching on the beach, and not too many people.

In Kuala Lumpur, we rented an apartment, so I don’t have any tips on nice guesthouses.

Happy planning! !

Hi Gabriel and Xavier,

Thanks so much for your replies to my post. I’ve taken note, though I’m worried I won’t have the same weather conditions as you did this summer—but we’ll see with a good raincoat! 😊

I have a question about the vaccines you got for your kids. I’m planning to get Hepatitis A, but I’m wondering about rabies, typhoid, and Japanese encephalitis. Do you think they’re really necessary? I’m not a fan of "convenience" vaccines, I’ll admit. Malaria prophylaxis too? I’d love to hear some opinions! 🙏

Thanks to the whole community! 👩🏽‍🤝‍👩🏻

Hi Marie,

When it comes to health, everyone does what feels right based on their doctor’s recommendations, but for our part: - Hepatitis A vaccine only - Anti-malaria treatment for Borneo

Thanks so much for your reply. Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m planning to do now. Do you know the west coast beaches at all? Is Langkawi too touristy? And is it doable in December/January? 😅 Or do you have any other ideas for nice beaches away from the resorts, please? Thanks so much for your help! 😊👋
