I’ve often been told that traveling alone in Egypt as a woman can be dangerous, and that it’s absolutely necessary to have a companion. Is this really the case? Can I travel there without running into major problems?

Hi Zohra, It depends on the places you plan to visit. In my opinion, no problem for Cairo and the tourist sites in Upper Egypt (Luxor, Aswan, etc.). I visited solo in 1999 and 2010. Semi-organized with family in 2021.

I went to Dahab solo in 1999. No issues at all, but things may have changed there—I wouldn’t comment on it today.

Hello everyone, While there's no such thing as zero risk anywhere, you can definitely travel to Egypt alone as a woman. It's like back home—you probably walk around alone often, and nothing happens... until it does. The same goes for Egypt, or anywhere else. Just to share (I'm going with my wife), unlike "typical tourists," we love getting off the beaten path—even finding ourselves alone in villages with no other tourists, taking photos of sites (especially Luxor by bike at night). We’ve never had any issues. Even as a couple, things can happen, but never to us. On the contrary, Egyptians are very watchful and kind. Thoutmosis

My best friend and I stayed during October/November, and everything went really well! At the end of the trip, we parted ways—she returned to Cairo, and I went to Luxor—and neither of us felt unsafe. I’d love to go back solo in two months (inshallah)

Hi, I just got back from Egypt. No problems at all. Egypt is a safe country. You only have to see the number of police officers on the roads and in the cities. Plus, Egyptians are very welcoming and have no interest in harming tourists. Go ahead without any worries! Alain
